Ive got this wierd time travelling thing going, where the parties ancestors actually come from the future, where this powerful being is rulling pretty much everything.

In a last ditch attempt to free the multiverse, they (*they* being a male and female from numerous races) travelled back in time. Of course, the plan mucked up and they ended up going waaaay back in time, further than they intended.

Long story short, they mingled with the people of the time, had numerous children and then jumped forward in time again. Before they did so, they bound a fey to protect all of their children and guide all their decendants.

This time they didnt jump far enough and ended up being stuck under water, 300 years before their intended destination.

The fey didnt know about this though, and continued to guide the decendants up until the intended point in time. By this point, he had guided them so that the decendants of the original male and female of each race, bred and thus, gave birth to a full blooded decendant of the original time travellers.

These are the pc's.

Anyway, thats the background of the blood lines, kinda complicated i know, if you dont get it, yell at me and ill try and explain it better.

Since the original time travellers have been in stasis for 300 years by the time the party find them, only one is left. He spills the beans of why the travelled back in time, telling of a powerful being that ends up rulling the multiverse.

A being that is going to be born in a number of months.

Long story short, what the hell do you think this thing should be?

For so many people to go to so much trouble to try and defeat it, what would it be?

I thought about pun pun, but thats just a bit cliqued.

Im thinking it should be a humanoid from the material plane, probably just a simple wizard of sorts.

Also, do you think it should even be born when the party find out about it? Going after the parents before its born will solve the problem, but killing a pregnant woman isnt exactly a 'good' thing to do.

I dont know, im at a loss.

Any help here would be great... this whole thing is very confusing.

I'd say a cool idea would the BBEG being a traitorous party member, but that would screw up time even more.

Otherwise, I have no idea. Can't help you here.

To put it alot more simply, im looking for an interesting bad guy that is capable of ruling the universe.

Doesnt matter if he is a hardcore fighter who fought every battle himself, or a manipulative wizard who fights from behind the scenes. As long as they are capable of ruling the universe some day.

Any idea is welcome, though id prefer it if they are humanoid.

Cheers

Let's say the PCs find the underwater base where their ancestor-from-the-future are lying in stasis, with just one surviving. Instead of awaking him, and having him tell this entire backstory, they find a personal journal (perhaps a computer?) Then in the next room, they find the stasis room, with one ancestor miraculously surviving.

But what if the fey did something wrong, and the PCs are not the Eugenistically enginered super-heroes the ancestors-from-the-future wanted to create, but instead they are plain representative of their own race? The surviving-ancestor-from-the-future get angry, kills the fey, uses his technology-from-the-future to conquer every known country, create a Big-Brother nation to attempt to detect the uprising villain that will control everyone in the future. Eventually, this SAftF uses his technological knowledges to help him survive long enough to control this, eventually loosing all humanity, and becoming this tyran...

Even better: this SAtfF enlist the PCs to help him build his utopic nation while watching for the tyran upcoming... In this scenario, the SAtfF secretly kills the fey, feeling its influence is nefarious on his subordonates: the PCs.

A better move would be a predestination paradox. The BBEG is a canniving scheming background character that steers the descendants into allowing them to take over the world. How else would it happen than them having supersoldiers?

Im gonna go with the whole time paradox thing and make it that the ones who take over the world in the future are actually the player characters decendants.

SO

So, the bloodline will start in the past, pass through the present (duh) then go to the future. Then it will jump back to the past and continue through to the present, along-side its previous generations, this is the player characters. The bloodline continues along to the future where the players decendants are the ones who take over the world and their ancestores are the ones who jump back in time to stop it.

Complicated as all heck, but it makes for a cool story i think :P

Now i just have to figure out their characters... ugh

How many do you think? They will be the usual adventuring party. 4-5?

Peace

Oh my... my head ;_; Time is much to complicated for me

Does the BBEG need to be born, or can he be ressurrected/reincarnated/whatever?

I think itd be cool for the party to meet a helpful NPC elf (cause everyone knows elves love everything and wouldnt want to hurt someone), who tells them about adventures and gives them leads and all that, but secretly hes the BBEG whos trying to lead them astray/get them to unknowingly help him.

Then the PCs either find out, or he betrays them, a big battle ensues. If they die, they die. If he dies, he later gets reincarnated/resurrected/whatever by a minion and comes back as something really powerful/with gained knowledge, and then takes over the world.

Maybe it could be the child of a female party member or one of the males who is attached to a female NPC's kids. If you go with the female party member idea, if they aren't sexually active, you could say it's a demon baby put inside her.

Make him a Necromancer. Have him be extremely good looking, possibily befriend the party as a young Sorceror. Now this is where the Necromancing comes in handy. If the PC's travel to the future to fight the BBEG they find that he used his powers to become immortal and all creepy and skeletony

If you want it to be a spellcaster, I once built a Devil Ultimate Magus. I took a cr 6 Devil and mage the crap out of him.

What I would do would be have to have the BBEG discover that the party have gone back in time, and decides to do the same as well, to protect his legacy.

Then He decides to start his own line of warrior who will train to fight the heroes at every turn, giving you a Cabal of warrior fighting blindly for a cause.

The BBEG deciced to return to the future only to find that this time traveling has messed with the past and he has lost. So he decides to make sure that his downfall doesn't happen. He goes back to the pst, but gets lost, his only remains are certain items which randomly appeared across several time periods. The Cabal decides that to please their god (which is what the secret society could have grown into in all those years) they must unit the items which act as anchors and pull him from the time stream into the present so he might battle the PC in the campaign final session.

That way you don't have to worry about a unprotected child, and you can have your final battle with someone whoes not a child.

Big Bad Evil Guys are usually at their worst when they're not what the party expects at all.

Simply put: BBEG is a Big Bad Evil GIRL. A necromancer, who managed to keep herself cloaked from whatever your Powers That Be are, and grew ridiculously strong- snapped her fingers, raised an army, etc, etc.

What are the levels of the party members? If they aren't very strong, kinda hard to have a good BBEG.

There's always the option of having her being able to go to Hell and say "Look, Asmodeus and Mephitopholes, stop your *****ing- I can pwn you both, so how about I make you both my b&%$#es, and you can live when I'm done.

I know 2 things-
1)The BBEG is the decendant of the current pc's.
2)He wont be born for another 5-6 generations.

Im thinking that the pc's will realise that they have to jump forward in time (or just go into stasis untill the right time) to defeat the BBEG.

I dont want them killing themselves (dull) or killing him when he is just an infant (dull too) so... thats another thing ill need help with.

This villan is actually the decendant of 3 very powerfull adventuring groups, who were all good aligned (The great and powerfull heroes who currently rule the kingdom in the pc's time, the time travellers from the villians own time, aswell as the pc's themselves.... thats the order they go in too.)

So there has to be something pretty evil for him to turn his back on such a great legacy.

Black guard and necromancer have been done to death, raised, then done to death again. Whats a villian out there that the world hasnt seen before?

(It just struck me... but unless the pc's have had children by the time they face the villian, he/she probably wont want to kill them...)

If they use time travel or the stasis chamber to get to the time when the BBEG is still young (or about to be born), you could always have them arrive a decade or two later than intended. They might even start out believing they've come to the right time. If they do use time travel then you'll obviously need to make sure they can't simply take a second time-trip back in time to get to their intended 'destination'. It's hard for a BBEG to live up to any letter of the abbreviation as an infant...

Make him accidental. The BBEG himself doesn't know what's going on and then BAM he's omnipotent. Posession would be good here, maybe a score of demons are using a Lv2 Neutral Good Commoner as a vessel to contain them while on the material plane. Or maybe it could the the fey?

Okay, the majority of the good Villain archetypes have been done to undeath and back (Hence, archetype), so we need something revolutionary.

We already have time travel, and we already know that the BBEG is extremely powerful. Let's consider the Unholy Scion (Heroes of Horror), a child spawned by a demon with powers extreme beyond its race. Let's combine the two.

For example, let's say the BBEG comes to exist normally in one timeline, Daddy + Mommy = "love eachother very much..." = BBEG.
Then, realising the PCs will think to prevent this from happening, he gets convoluted. He manipulates time to the point that he is personally responsible for the creation of himself.
Let's say, he alchemically induces pregnancy in a random suitable female using his own "material". Having modified either himself or the "material" beforehand, the BBEG is an Unholy Scion, ensuring that the pregnancy comes to term and avoiding any possibility that the PCs discover the real mother.

This is a predestination paradox (Unless you use the infinite realities theory), wherein a person is responsible for their own existence. The BBEG becomes his own creator, and then grows up, realises he needs to become his own creator, becomes his own creator, ad infinitum. He essentially becomes fact. Every time the PCs go back to kill the potential mother, another random woman becomes her. They literally can't kill him without, well, killing him.

Regarding the Bound Fey: Nothing in its Binding seems to say it couldn't fashion a BBEG while watching the growing offspring: Therefore you wind up with a BBEG who knows all about the players - what they can do and where their limitations lie...

Effectively he is the PC-BANE!

Lyinginbedmon, i like you idea. If he is the evil scion, i could possibly make him some sort of warrior class (i hate this stereo type that only magic users ever bercome *truly* powerfull!

Anyway, i like the idea of the pc's going "hey, lets just go back in time and kill his mother while shes pregnant!" (Evil... i know... but its d&d, 2 wrongs make a right :P)

Anyway, they jump back in time to kill the mother, when staning next to her is this huge, dark, knight like figure who defends her with his life (and thus, his own)

Still confusing... but it would be interesting at least :P

Any more thoughts?

Im liking the idea of a warrior type villian, but what class/prc?

Ive decided on making the BBEG a monk.

At the moment, im thinking LN or LE. He is basically all about testing himself and pushing himself to the limit. In his view, all of existance revolves around him and everything and everyone is just there as a test of his abilities (a very, the world is my play ground, sort of view).

Due to the fact that he is decended from the pc's and that they will end up ruling the country, this monk will be a prince. He has taken a feat that is the equivelent (sp?) of 'vow of poverty', though on that is LN or LE based. Its more based upon the fact that he has discarded any material possessions and is focusing on purity of his form and all that jazz...

He will have preformed numerous acts which will appear to be evil in intent, though they were only done to test his abilities.

-He convinced a necromancer to raise the dead lands so he could fight his way out (there are millions of graves in the dead lands, he got out but the coutnry was plagued with undead for months).
-He broke into his ancestors (the pc's) tombs just to see if he could. The pc's are the heroes of the nation (in the future) and their tombs are thus, highly guarded. He didnt even steal anything, just broken in then left.
-Broken *out* of the palace (he is constantly guarded, he's nobility after all), disguised himself, then broke back in and slapped then king. Broke back out with guards after them, lost them, broke back and slipt back into his room. Nobody knew he was missing.
-Disguised himself yet again, had himself sent to the worst prison, (think the ones Chronicles of Riddick, 'Triple Max Slam's' and all that) killed everyone inside without alerting the guards, then broke back out.

These are the sorts of things this character has done, he is totally self focused and doesnt see *any* other creature as equal to him, not even dragons (infact, in the future, he single handedly slayed the last dragon).

Im thinking that the pc's can either kill him, but they would be able to talk him out of his evil deeds aswell. Sort of along the lines of challangeing him to do good (ie: "i bet you couldnt help bring 10 families out of poverty" or "i bet you couldnt defend this town from those raiders" or just attack him directly "the only reason you dont care about others is because you *cant*!"

He will have a pretty serious ego, so any attack at his abilities will be responded with "can too! watch me!"

Im just so over the whole, blackguard in bloody armor roaring over the battle field, and hacking his way through village after village of innocents.

What do ya'll think?

A few ideas...

Your villian could be an inocent. The more the Players mess with him, the more screwed up, evil and powerful he gets. He could start off as your classic farm boy, until this bunch of brutish adventurer's showed up and hacked him into peices and he was cloned by Evil Scientist X who screwed up the process. The players would eventually realize that in order to stop this villian, they need to stop themselves. Of course, once they do that, the original time line could take it's course and the villian could still come to power. (Grin)

One of the villians children, or his own actions should be pivotal to the existance of the players so they can't simply kill him.

Doesn't the villian have his own form of time travel? If he is the ruler of the universe he should be intimately familiar with everything the players are about the try. Only by trying something new and surprising him should they succeed.

I like the idea overall... but it dosent seem very BBEG-ish :/

Thats because i want there to be more than one way for this guy to be beaten.

The pc's could just go in and beat him to death (kinda hard, due to his hit and run tactics) or they could talk him out of his current actions. (ie: "I bet you couldnt defend this town from those thousands of undead you had raised!")

His ego is his biggest downfall, if the party plays against it, they can actually turn him into a good character (since i doubt he is actually "evil" in the common sense). If the pc's succeed, he will see that it is actually harder to preform acts of greatest without collateral damage than it is to preform acts of greatness and not care how many innocents die.

This guy actually has the possibility to become an awsome agent of good, IF the pc's give him a chance.

Is this making any sense/sounding interesting?
Naveen

06-23-07, 07:46 PM
Ahhh... it all makes sense to my feeble mind...

When I think it through, I really like it. I hope your PCs look at it from all angles and dont just assume hes a BBEG that needs to be beat to death (I know mine wouldnt). Good luck :)

Around the start of their adventures, the pc's will come across a man in the mountains carting rocks and stones, higher up into the moutains. He will tell them that he is building himself a home and a place where he can reach true enlightenment.

Obviously, this guy is a monk of sorts.

In the future, if the pc's managed to defeat the BBEG via words and not weapons, they can tell him about this place, a monastry(sp) that he has never heard of.

If the pc's travel there with him, they find a great structure built upon the tallest moutain, made entirely of stone (think of the structure the ninja's used in Batman Begins).

When they all go inside, they see the man they saw carting stones in the past. After everyone is over how someone (a human for that matter) could live for over a 1000 years and not age a day, the BBEG will decide to stay and study under him.

Back when the part first meet the man, he will be something like monk15/cloud anchorite 10. Without even knowning it (or caring) he will actually be the most powerfull person in the game at that time. Due to his cloud anchorite levels, he will be immortal. So i figure that by the time the pc's meet him 1000 years in the future, he will be something like monk30/cloud anchorite 10.

I think he will have alot of exalted feats (vow of peace/non-violence most likely) but probably not vow of poverty.... he has a whole building, i think that would break it.

He will have alot to teach the BBEG, who is only a 20th lvl (still mortal) monk.

What do you all think of this outcome?

It sounds really cool, I'd just say be careful not to make the story revovle around the BBEG and the monk instead of the PCs. PCs love it when everything is about them :)
