so it's a character concept ive been thinking about and kicking around for a while. i posted here last week or so asking for advice and was giving really good advice : )

Long Read

back ground:
Jaryn Witind was raised in a farm village outside of sundabar. he spent his days farming and playing with his animals. he wasn't anything special. when he became a teenager he started going out hunting during the days that he finished his work early to help with extra food and money for his family. he lived what would be called a normal, dream, life in his eyes.

in his 16th year, one day while he was out hunting, enjoying his afternoon like always, he noticed large amounts of smoke coming from the direction of his village. it was at that moment he just froze in fear, something was wrong, what could he do???. he stood there for what felt hours to him, but was only minutes, and finally got his feet to move. he took off running towards his village, but arrived what seemed to be to late.

what he saw when he arrived back home was smouldering piles where houses used to be, fields burnt to nothing, all his friends and neighbors skewered on pikes, headless. then he almost tunnel viewed on his own father and brothers skewered on pikes. as he looked around he noticed that there were very few females killed, and that there bodies were missing, including those of his mother and sisters. it was also at this point he noticed that the heads of all the villagers were piled where the center of town and urinated on by the pilagers. it was at this point he lost himself and everything started spinning, and he blacked out.

when he awoke it was dark, and the fires had finally put themself out. reality finally hit him. his family was gone. his friends, his neighbors also gone. he was now alone in this world. he dropped to his knees and prayed for what seemed like hours. he asked for answers, why would Lathander do this to him, why would he allow his village to be slaughtered at the hands of these monsters. realizing that they have been ignored and forgotten about by Lathander, he cursed at him and swore vengence for his family and friends, and made a promise he would free the women of his village, dead or alive.

It was at this point when Tyr himself took a glance at this young boy. Tyr saw the vengence and honor growing in jaryn's little heart and took pity on the young man. wanting to see if this kid would be able to make it on his own, he decided to give him a slight helping hand. he illuminated the path the orc warriors took as they left the village and whispered into Jaryn's ear "follow the path of light, and you will be rewarded."

Jaryn realizing someone, no some thing was watching over him and helping him, grabbed what armor he could scrounge up off the dead villages and orcs, grabbed his pitchfork and took off following the path. knowing he couldn't take them out straight on, he decided to do what damage he could as he trailed them. he spent the next few months trailing them and killing the straglers as he found them. during this time he was also able to follow them back to there camp and saw the women locked in prisons, being forced to have the orcs baby's. after a few months he knew he had learned alot and had time to actually gather better armor. he decided it was time to free the women in there cages.

after they left for one of there raids into a village, he decided to sneak in and take out what he could. Jaryn was able to easily dispatch all the orc left in the camp, as they were the older or wounded warriors and women. he refused to kill any of the women or the warriors who would not fight him. he fought through the resistance and was able to free all the women held captive. he spent the next couple of days leading them to a nearby village for safety, and during that time learned of the fact that his mother was sold into slavery, and his sisters were murdered b/c they were to young to be mothers.

after leading these captives to safety he then figured he needed to question the orcs to find who they sold her to. before he was able to head out back to the camp, the leader of the town tried to pay him for his services. he refused over and over when different items and amounts were offered, stating he was doing this for the greater good. it was only when he heard a voice, did he accept the next item they offered. it was a new suit of full plate armor and a new wepaon to go with it. so outfitted with new armor, a new shield and a smaller version of his pitch forked, made to be used one handed he left the town.

he made his way back to the camp and stalked their leader. when he finally saw an opening he made his move. he darted in and mortally wounded their leader in one attack. it was something he didn't expect, as his pitchfork glowed with a "holy" aura, not realizing he had put his own force into it smiting the orc in the process. while keeping the orc alive he began to interrogate him. asking him question after question, trying to make sense of where his mother had gone to.

it was then that it had hit him..what the orc was trying to communicate. his mother was the one that had the orcs come destroy the village, she was actually a wife of one of the higher ups in the Zhentarium. when she finally grew tired of her new family and what she was she decided to go back but not before taking out what would remind her of her past few years.

it was at this point he felt a pain in his chest and things started going black. all he could thing was that this wasn't the best spot for his to pass out. he then realized that the sharp pain was actually a sword through his side. as he fell over dying he swore that he would have his revenge on this woman he used to call his mother.

he laid there dead for a few hours when he suddenly woke up with this older man standing over him. when the older man spoke it was with a booming voice, that barely made a sound, "i have brought you back to continue your journey and fulfill your destiny. you have been given a second chance to track down the person responsible for the slaughter of your people, and kill her. in addition to that, i have given you the task of helping to destroy the Zhentarium, which is the organization your mother was working for. please keep this helmet on at all times as it will mask what you really are." and with that the old man disappeared and left only a helmet on the ground where he used to be. it took quite a while for jaryn to realize what happened and who that was, but it finally hit him. Tyr himself brought him back to finish his business. but, but, but, what did he bring him back as.

he spent the next day or two trying to come to terms with himself, and what he had become. it was at this point he heard a voice inside his head once more, explaining why he had this done to him and what he had become.

so that's what i have come up with. he will be about level 3-4 paladin, and either be a risen martyr or preferably just a deathless.

any thoughts, comments, suggestions???

Undead and Palidin don't make scense you kill undead, how many times does someone get risen in the course of 8 games? Near to none are undead but just risen from the dead and if his 'mentor' was a Palidin like I suspect then he wouldn't be able to resurect someone as an undead.

Depends ont eh God the palidan follows I would guess. I like the idea...but this is coming from the guy that tried to get his DM to let him play a Mummy Radiant Servent of Palor...so I got a soft spot for odd undead PCs

ok well in response of the first post. he's not undead. he's deathless, or risen martyr (boed)

basically he wasn't raised as undead, he was actually resurrected by tyr or a celetial servent of tyr as a deathless/undying, who has sworn vengence/justice upon someone and this is to help hi achieve his goal. another reason is b/c tyr has chosen him to be one of his servents. if tyr needs something done, or someone brought to justice, he's one of the ones chosen to do so.

Deathless, is a positive energy undead, get's healed by cure spells, harmed by inflict.

as to the second post, ty.. i have been trying to figure out this kind of idea. and finally last week was able to bring it to life. from what i can think of, tyr is the god of vengence/justice and there for would help this individual along with his achievement.

Deathless would work pretty well....hmmm that does bring my idea back into play **grins** Another Chracter idea that is similar, sorta, is a Hellbred Pally. I like the Deathless better but it is another option to throw out there

Fiend Folio 2: Tyrants of the Nine Hells.

Basicly some oen who was sent to hell but repented at the last moment. Gets brought back by the gods to attone for his sins. They look fairly demonic, red skin horns hooved feet, stuff liek that if you want. Favored class Palidan, and I think they can freely level in and out of it.

They get a bunch of niffty things for no level adjust. You can pick spirit or body and get different things depending on it

the deathless I'm sure a DM could live with. since they are positive energy undead. I encouraged a player of mine to take the risen martyr prestige class and he was a cleric/ paladin of st. cuthbert

I disagree with the risen martyr PrC mostly because at level ten your character gets to go bye bye and you can't multiclass.

I like the idea of a hellbred, it gives an edge of spice to a all-holy class, perhaps such a Paladin would cease being welcomed by the community and a little despised. The truest of Paladins who had a moral deformity not very long ago. It has LOTs of potential

Personal I would perfer a mummified paladin. It doesn't fit your background.

But for example a paladin that was intrusted with guarding a artifact was mummified to contiune the duty after his death.

He could follow a LN deity and have a Lawful Neutral mentor. As for the undead thing, certain types of undead, such as ghosts, can be of any alignment, even Lawful Good; Also, there's a PrC in Savage Species that allows an undead creature to regain the abilities and alignment that it had in life.

Undead And Paldin Don't Mix Unless He Has Risen As A Death Knight!!!

Necropolitan, from LM, it's the only undead I can think of that doesn't have to be evil. They also get Turn Resistance, and heal naturally (though only inflict and the like magically heals them). There's no level adjustment, and as compensation for losing your Con bonus to HP, you get d12 HD. I think it might work, especially if you use it as a way to sneak into the Zhent stronghold.

I can't remember where it is now, but I remember reading about a good elven lich. I don't have my books now, but I just remembered it. That might be a possibility to stay a paladin and be undead.

Yes, you start with the undead closest to you when you turn, so techinically if you role high enough, you HAVE to turn yourself.
