I wish to make a PC of this (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20031003b) race, and I'm not sure how to get him out of the Underdark (in his backstory). Any ideas? I'm partial to any class, although an Intelligence-based one is obviously the way to go.

Easy. He's working, secretly or openly, for the remnant of the Imaskari empire. He's on the surface mainly as an advance scout for what the DeepImaskari eventually plan as their return to the surface world. They don't plan on staying in the underdark forever if they can do otherwise, after all. His job is to get up on the surface and have a look around, learning as much about the surface civilizations as he can, and maybe even find a place for the returning DeepImaskari to settle (or conquer). He might have a specific mission on the surface, or he might not. Either way, talk with your DM about it. Characters like this practically beg to have subquests assigned to them.

You could also go with the wanderlust hook. He/she has been kept away from everything other than its own race for an extended period. Eventually a wanderlust is going to present itself. Why not use the curiosity approach, or if evil the outright disdain for all other races etc. In either case theres plenty of possibility for roleplaying.....and you can choose whatever class setup youd like. If good youll be more than willing to meet up with a group of advnturers and.....well....adventure, since it will give you the opportunity to see the world youve never seen. As an evil character youll be more than willing to use others as your pawns to eventually come up with a plan to overthrow a particular area, or destroy a particular area as you see fit.

They seem to be pretty big into studying magic, if you went wizard, maybe you could have some one that has travelled to the surface to study magic there, see what there is to be seen and learn what the surface dwellers know.

Another obvious story is that of the outcast. He was cast out of the community because of some crime he committed. Because the Imaskari are neutral, it wouldn't matter what alignment you chose to make him. For example, a neutral society could pass a law that's inherently evil (e.g., slavery, medical testing of unwilling participants to advance medicine), so a lawful good or lawful neutral Imaskari could still be deemed a criminal. I doubt I need to provide an example of how a chaotic or evil character could be deemed a criminal. :)

As for the other suggestions on this board, keep in mind that the Imaskari's memory of the location of its homeland is magically wiped from its mind. If the Imaskari intends to return, he can't know when and where to return. The paranoia of the race would be such that the character probably wouldn't even be allowed to know where to rendezvous with the Imaskari that are intended to bring him back home. Your character would have to be willing to always leave himself open to divination spells, which could be used by the other Imaskari to locate him when the time came. This could be dangerous for your character, but an interesting hook that a DM like me could enjoy exploiting. :)
