I'd appreciate some input on peoples' thoughts regarding my next character. :) First, a little about the campaign and party:

The campaign I'm playing in is set in the Forgotten Realms, during the Crown Wars era (currently the First Crown War). We play fairly standard FR, although use a modified version of the Great Wheel cosmology. In this the Outer Planes aren't entirely as they are today--the elven deities, for example, live in Arvandor but the realm isn't a part of Arborea yet (though this is something that might happen as the result of the campaign).

The party are elves working for the Miyeritar secret service on various missions through the millennia-long war, covertly foiling plots hatched by the Aryvandaar sun elves. These missions normally last a session or two, with a decade or so of Realms-time in between each where our characters are presumably doing other (or at least, not as noteworthy things). We're stealth-based, level 10/11, split as follows:

- Moon elf Bard/Virtuoso
- Dark elf (illithyri; drow do not yet exist) Ranger/Rogue
- Dark elf Wizard/Rogue/Arcane Trickster
- Half-moon elf, half-silver dragon Ranger

Currently Miyeritar is facing an invasion from an unknown foe (who, out of character, are the forerunner species of Githyanki/Githzerai) which we suspect Aryvandaar is behind, but do not know. Queen Morwel of the Court of Stars has offered aid and as a result the party is being sent on a trip through the Astral Plane to find the Court of Stars and get the promised aid. Planar travel is difficult in this era, hence no simple Plane Shifting around.

My previous PC was a doppleganger Soulknife (in FR dopplegangers were created by/descended from the Batrachi, one of the Creator Races, so we have them and a lot of locathah, koa-toa and the like around). The doppleganger's short lifespan meant he was getting old, however, and he vanished following a battle between a Ghaele eladrin and a particularly large Forerunner. So, as the party begins the journey through the Astral, my new PC will be joining them to help.

After chatting with my DM a bit, I'd like to go with some sort of half-fey character (with the Seelie Court also roaming the Upper Planes). I think it'd be a good angle for him to be only reluctantly serving the Seldarine--he has to help the party get through the Astral to the Court of Stars, but would really rather be doing something else. An unwilling diplomat and intermediary between the various groups involved here.

From this point onward is where I could use some advice. :) Our party, I think, could use some divine spellcasting and some melee power. With this in mind, and bearing in mind the role of diplomat (though not necessarily a good one--the Bard is the party 'face'), I have come up with the following builds and stories:

- A half-elf, half-fey Favoured Soul/Divine Agent. This character would be the child of someone important in the Seelie Court, perhaps even Titania or Oberon. The Divine Agent class would allow his forebears to contact him, and this sort of background would explain the spellcasting even though Fey are rarely divine casters. So he'd not be so much a Favoured Soul by choice as by obligation. I could use a little help explaining exactly why this character might find himself forced to serve the Seldarine by helping the party through the Astral, though, and am not convinced that it packs enough punch in melee.

- The second idea would be a half-elf, half-fey Ranger. This'd have some more power in combat, but I am a little worried he'd feel too similar to the rest of the party, and am not sure which direction I'd take him in as we progress in levels. Plus, again, why would he have been seconded to the Seldarine?

Any comments or suggestions would be welcome. :) I'm very keen to be a half-fey and involve the Seelie (or Unseelie) Court; the other half doesn't have to be elven, but would probably make it easier.

For those who don't have Fiend Folio, in case it helps, half-fey get various enchantment spell-like abilities, butterfly wings, immunity to enchantment, and a couple of stat boots (notably +4 Charisma).

The butterfly wings are a tad problematic for the imagery, but how about Spirit Shaman (CompDivine) or Totemist (Incarnum)?

Duskling (LA 0 planar Incarnum fey http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20050907a&page=2 )

Totemist (A druidlike Incarnum class: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20050907a&page=3 )

Namely as an alternative for the Ranger.
