I have a slight problem..... I really don't know how to play my character right... or i just don't know how he would feel about this situation.

Vaelon.
LN Tiefling Thief/Acrobat

I'm on a campaign Where we had to go back in time to the days where the first paladin was alive and retrieve what is call "The Sword of Hope" and bring it back to the our time to save the world.

The problem with this is that at my character's creation he had no memory of a big part of his life.... come to find out (through recovery of some of his memories) he has some connection to the past where we went and he wasn't on the good side.....

Do i go back to the dark or should i stay the way i am now?..... I decided to find out more about myself before making that decision, but in that time. The party gave me the sword of hope since i have the ability to safeguard the weapon. So now i have possession of one of the most powerful weapons on the planet.....

What do i do... what should i be thinking? anything will help.... i don't know how good i did in explaining what's going on, but if you got any questions or comments please leave them.

It's an hard one. You are Lawful Neutral so you should remain loyal to your mission. However, what you found in the past is enough to make you doubt of yourself and perhaps switch alignment.
Hey, just had a strange idea... perhaps in the past were you "converted" by a cloaked stranger, and were unable to see his face. Why don't you try to find your past self and try to atone him?

Cool story. When I play a neutral character and come upon a descision where my other Al come doesn't come into play (you lawfulness would, IMHO, bind you both to your friends and mission and to the darkness you once served, as you were loyal to both at one time) I make descisons based upon three questions:
1) What does the characters faith demand?
2) What would your past really make you choose?
if I can't answer either of those questions I go to the third
3) What serves the character's personal intrests the most? Being neutral (again IMHO) means that you have either a dedication beyond good or evil, or you are just don't care. If thats true the ultimate descision lies within self intrest.
This is just what I do, but I generally play choatic over Lawful anyway, so w/e.
That being said as a player you probably don't want to go against the party if you like your chara
