Well, I recently got my first dragon magazine ordered from the net... it was issue 313 and had some cool templates in it and my mind completely sprung when i saw it had the half-vampire in it because i had always wanted to play one! So i did my character for a game thats is coming up and he is a human half-vampire ranger level 2, i intend to go into rogue and fighter later. I want him to feel hatred against all undead but specially vampires because they did him to what he is, and he don't like that. So i guess he is some kind of vampire hunter... (no not blade...i hate blade...) But i need suggestions on his background. And yeah we play in FR....

Can you summarize what is an half-vampire? Is it apparent that he is different?

No don't think so, they almost always has jet black hair and their eyes are red, yellow, black or green eyes. They are pale and slender and have pronounced canines for feeding but that can be hidden, the have slightly pointed ears...

There is no set discription of what a Half Vampire looks like. They generally have normal features, but also have some vampiric features as well. Check out Vampire Hunter D for a good example of a half human half vampire.

I also hwave a write up on my website if your interested:

there is an extremely ugly picture of a half-vampire in the 3.5 MM which totally detered me from ever wanting to become a vampire.

I think you are looking at the vampire spawn because there is no half-vampire in the MM 3.5...

Three words: Vampire Hunter D. Watch Bloodlust. He'll be better than 5000 Drizzt clones.

Nobody in Hellsing is a half-vampire. Seres is the closest thing but she's just a newbie vamp.

Or did you mean to look to Hellsing as an example of how vampire hunters might operate.

Here's a link to a short thread that, at first glance, has nothing to do with roleplaying a vampire or anything else. But my two last posts describe what I consider to be a über-cool idea for an undead (or vampire) hunter. Check it out. You might like it.

Ugh. It was inevitable that someone would mention Vampire Hunter D.

VHD is more of a stylistic thing, but some people miss that and get hooked on to the specifics, and wind up creating a Clone character.

Clone characters suck.

I guess your character could be an escapee from deep within the Westgate thiefs guild.
As a street urchin from Westgate, living from petty thievery, your character inavoidably makes contact with the thief guild. Out of shere luck and boldness makes it through to the inner chambers and witnesses one of the dukes in the midst of a terrible feast. A small noise, perhaps the racing of your terrified heart and the rush of blood to your temples, spurs the duke to your hiding place. Paralyzed with fear, you can do nothing but accept the dukes bite to your throat and accept the curse he puts you under. However something startles the duke before finishing the task of draining your remaining life force away. Weak and powerless you stumble away from the scene of this horrific crime. Finds an open sewergrate and actually tries to take your own life by throwing yourself into the ice stream of waste water below. The chill of the water touches your face, the embrace of the icy fluids snuffs the light inside you and everything is pure blackness. For a moment there you actually think that this is the end.

Next thing you know, you are being carried by strong arms through, what appears to be a dreamworld of snow covered branches and bushes.
Looking up, snowflakes land on your nose and melts away. You are wrapped in furs, and a wonderfull warmth is spreading through your limbs.
A tremendous sence of serenity and purity floats through your body.
You once again loose consiusness.
Nightmares plague you. Nightmares of men with bloody fangs, the victims of nameless assassins hunt you through empty westgate streets, eyes alight with malice and lust for your blood.
There you are, a vampires unfinished business.
During the next couple of weeks you are more or less unaware of what is happening around you.
Unaware that the Ranger Zorak has rescued you from the icy waters of a nearby river and is feeding you warm broth and wiping the sweat from your forehead.
The only thing you are aware of is that you are hiding a terrible secret inside. You are even trying to keep this a secret to yourself and with some success.
You get better.
Over the coming years, you become more and more like a son to Zorak and he a father to you.
As you begin to train as a ranger, learning the ways of the world through the eyes of Zorak, the memories of what happened that night in Westgate becomes more and more vivid. after training for some years you remember everything.
You swear vengeance.
Zorak sences the change in you and tries to help you but to no avail.
He even tries to stop you from leaving, claiming that vengeance leads nowhere.
In your first ever argument with Zorak, dreams, memories, premonitions on the future and a torn childs subconciouss joins forces and clouds your mind. The lust for blood in the middle of the rage and inner tumoil makes you overstep yet another boundarie and in a frenzy you accidently kill Zorak, your father, your mentor and protector.
This is where the adventure starts.
Your character will seek vengeance, both for Zorak and himself as well as penance for the unlawful slaying of his father.

My suggestion.
Chaotic Good, human, thf/rgr goodhearted but with an rare but uncontrollable temper.
Good luck.

well, vampire hunter D is good... but i know if it was me... I would go with more of a blade charicter. you know, the daywalker kind of stuff. Can a half-vam go out in the dark?

oh well thats just my two cents

I know what you mean... I can spend hours and hours thinking up stories and after we have played they say "did we gain a level?"

And when you ask them to come up with a background story, or even something simple like a miniature to represent their character, its takes them weeks to comply. ;)

Yeah, players who've never been DMs don't know how much work goes into the making of their weekly gaming session...

It's like there's an archetypal player out there, and it's the same the world over. It trancends culture, race and religion. It simply *IS*. It scares me sometimes.

I'm playing a dhampir. He's a mercenary fighter who's constantly on the lookout for information as to the whereabouts of his father (who raped his mother and left her to die in childbirth). He's a really bitter guy, taking out his insecurities on non-humans even though he's not completely human himself (he tells no-one about his ailment as he is deeply ashamed). His alignment is neutral, he sometimes kills in cold blood and he constantly criticizes other members of the party for whatever reason he wants. It makes it a little more interesting then just having a bunch of different chracters deciding to adventure together despite racial, social and class differences.
