I've played D&D for 22 years now and started with 1st ed. I think I have played just about all types of characters, and I was hoping to ask the masses here about a character idea that would be challenging, but fulfilling the main Damage dealer role of the group. I have come up with the Legendary Leader/ Fighter / Fortune's Friend idea vs. the monk vs. the Fighter/Barbarian Frenzied Berzerker, but I thought you guys could give me more to think about than just those.
I have thought about the Leader/Fortune's Friend/Fighter to be a peasent hero type. Leading from his passion and not a nobility title.
My Monk idea being a Muay Thai Specialist who is compelled to protect some other party member.
And by Frenzied Berzerker trying to suppress his inner rage and struggling with the loss of self control and fears of harming someone he cares about. (He doesn't rage/frenzy unless he has too)

I don't know though they all sound kinda generic been done a hundred times before types. Help me come up with some ideas and please sound off on my ideas.

Greetings from another veteran though I do not have as much time under my belt as you do. About 15 years or so. When it comes to old coggers like us it seems like everything has been a hundered times and most of it has.

My advice is to start from the ground and build a person not a X 5/Y 5/Uber PrC 10.

What did this guys dad do for a living? Did he work with him? Ad infinitum get into this cat's personal story. Nothing big like sworn oaths of vengence, more like why doesn't he like broccoli. Are you following me? I think you are.

Then when you have this guy figured out to the point that you know not only what color his first girlfriend's hair was, but how many strands were in the lock that he kept ( ok that was exaggerating) pick up Tome of Battle The Book of Nine Swords and realise that it is the single most game changing book that has been released in recent memory.

Don't worry about the fluff of the classes and the Temple of Nine Swords that can all be reworked. One of the 3 Martial Classes should scream out to you for what this guy is like. Throw back to the old days and enjoy that (relatively) new class smell.

I think you will find it refreshing in it's simplicity and beauty and have a more mechanically sound frontliner than has previously existed in the game.

22 years of experience plus ToB mechanics equals great martial characters for fun and profit.

Enjoy,
Dax

No Problem. How is the character coming? Did you pick up ToB? I was hesitant at first because in a very basic sense it gave martial characters a spell mechanic. However, then I realised, it was really the only way to make them keep up. I hope your new character brings you a great deal of entertainment.

What about a bard/dragon disciple? Add a few levels of fighter, barbarian or paladin of freedom and you have a mystic warrior trying to figure out what the heck does he has in the blood, and why...

Hey man you never updated and let me know if you came up with a character concept you could wrap your old gamer soul around?

We crusty old guys have to stick together, so post again and let me know how goes.
