Vile Darkness or Exalted Light? [Archive] - Wizards Community

08-24-05, 01:49 PM There is an entries in the book of vile darkness listing things that are evil, but are they truely evil? In this thread, I shall show you the other parts of Evil with Brik (my NG Grey Orc Clr 3 of Elishar). Lets take a look see:

1.Lying, telling of what is not, though evil because it used only to get what wants. Though this is true, it is always the case. Mabey hte lie is to a noble of tyrrany to one of his knights, who was supposed to kill a family for not paying there taxes, but intead, helped them escape the town and fought off a gang of bugbears, lied to his king to not revoke his power to commit good. Here's another example: "Brik tells an evil Half-fiend cleric of Orcus that there is a town of weak mortals over the hill, knowing that it is actualy a town of power scocerers, knowing that he will try to kill them, in the wnd he is realy killed."

2.Cheating, playing unfairly, I'm afraid realy dosn't have a good side, however to those who have cheated, it would be a good sign if sometime they got a taste of their own cheap shots. For example: "Brik is cheated from his winnings of 20 PP, and makes a fixed game for the cheater, getting what was rightfuly his."

3.Theft, stealing, is often looked twords just taking what you want. However it just might be for what you need, like in that movie John Q., you sometimes steal becuase you love or need it for what is right. This dose not realy put as evil, just unlawful. Though it is mostly acts of greed, so it is considered evil. For example: "Brik steals away a weapon from someone is planing to kill someone with it. Seeing as he needs to steal it to save the mans life."

4.Betraly, do go agaist your ally, is dishonorable and rather cheap of your enemies to do. However, do it for what you think is right, such as opposing a murderer or tyrant, is more of redpemtion. However, betray only to get what you want is and act of selfeshness. For example: "Brik betrays a Tyrant after he learns the truth about him, he then joins a Freedom Fighter to go agaist the Tyrant"

5.Murder, to kill, has many chapters of good and evil, such as "It was the only way to stop him!", or "He had to be killed, he was about to do this". It is often just to fulfill what you want:killing, thus looking down at it, which personaly, I feel is correct. For example: "Brik kills a human planning to kill a whole village and was about to succeed"

6.Revenge, to take revenge agaisnt another for something, is quite a dark force, such as killing everyone of something becuase one of they're kind hurt you in a way. But, what about this: A child gets a prank from a child, and he decides to get her back by doing the same. This act of revenge has no strings attached most of the time, and is just seen as thus "taste of they're own medicine".

7.Worship twords evil gods or fiends (that's preety self explanitory) is dark no matter what reason, probitly for fear or power. However, it dosn't mean that you can't acknoledge them as existing, such as this: "Brik undestands that his god has a dual nature of Toldoth, and he understands that he is there and knows it's true, though he pays no worship"

8.Creating Undeath (alot of these are self explanitory, arn't they?). There is no good side to creating Undeath, it's just as evil as a Paladin killing his wife. However, creating another kind has no dark side: Creating Deathless. For example: "Brik creates an Undying Soldier (from Ebberon) to combat an Yaun Ti Ranger."

9.Casting evil spells (mabey I should stop this thing). There is no good way that this can help, only distroy. For example: "Brik casts a Protection against Good, he is cating a spell that he should not be casting and is doing an evil act."

10. Damning souls. This dark no matter what you do, the only way to damn a soul is to do it to a good or nuetral character. Evil damns itself. For example: "Brik damns a soul with a spell. He has commited an act of pure evil. Shame on you Brik"

11. Consorting with fiends. This is dark yes, but only if the fiend is evil and you are doing evil with him. Perhaps you can make plans for lunch or a date for a rebuilding of something. For example: "Brik helps Herla (LG Enryie Paladin 2) plant sunflowers for children. He is consorting with a fiend to do good along side it."

12. Creating evil creatures. This is never to be considered good, it is dark and meavelont to creatre creatures of evil. Fro example: "Brik creates a demon. It is a dark act, and Brik is bound to become nuetral evil by doing this, Shame on you Brik"

13. Using other for peronal gain. This is dark yes, but just becuase you are doing this dosn't mean you can't help them with there something to do. For example: "Brik uses Herla to kill a Red Dragon. After that, Herla asks Brik to do something for her, strangly while blushing."

14. Greed, wanting more than you deserve, is not evil just inncorrect. It is wrong to do it, but sometimes theirs reason for it. For example: "Brik wants for food to feed a vilage, yet he knows that it is more than can get."

15. Bullying others. This just mean, and sometimes cruel. But remember, Intimadation fallows these rules. Indimadatoin allows other to solve crimes, force other to tell the truth, help a lord distroy an army of Yugoloths, or just to get a table that is unfairly kept for no reason. For example: "Brik meets Suete (LN Deep Orc Samurai 4) and treats him to lunch, after they refuse service, Suete starts to Indimadate the owner to let them eat."

16. Bringing depair is dark no matter what you do. Making someone suffer instead of doing something is cruel, no exceptions. For example: "Suete fights a Drow Samurai named Sadimetsu, and instead of letting her kill herself with honor, he sunders her blade, not becuase he wants her to live, becuase he wants her to live in misery. However, if it were to just let her live, that makes it dishonorable too. The only true honorable thing he sees it is to cut her head off (after she stabs her self, being that is the proper tradistion)

17. Tempting Others is pretty dark, but sometimes it can serve as a good purpose, like a mission to rescue someone. For example: "Brik temps a group of adventures with gold to kill a Red Dragon of Tyranny."

18. Canabilism, eating a creature of the race. This is evil, though only if wanting. If it were no choice, it is just surviving, nothing to di with good or evil. For example: "Brik eats another Orc he killed, he is stranted there with nothing to eat. Though it is dark, it is not evli for him to eat the only source of food."

19. Masoism, inflicting pain on your self for pleasure. It's sick and twisted, yes, but not always evil. Sometimes you just inflict pain on your self to feel that it is making something right for wrong or for use of the Stigmata feat. Here is an example: "Brik carves a symbol in himself with his spear to use the stigmata feat, healing his alies to fight another day."

20. Self-Mutaion, inflictng wounds to see what happens to the skin. This is sick and digusting, but somewhat useful. There is no good way to look at this, it's just creepy. For example: "Brik damages his skin to see what happens. It's creepy and Brik is looked at as monsterous when he dose it."

21. Sadism, pleasure in inflicting pain on others. It is not only evil and digusting, but probilty the worse thing to do. For example: Harla hurts Brik accendently. and feels good for it (the other good.) She probilty won't do anything to hurt Brik again"

22. Psycohpathy-Murdering is a an evil and is probitly turly disgusting. However, on the plane of Ysgard, it is looked at as a good sense of battle. Things like this make me question how Chaotic Good this plane is. Here is an example: "A Duergar Dwarven Defender enjoys killing, not for the way Lanthugar or the Duergar life style, but becuase he gets a constant rush of passion from it."

Psycopathy-Rape is (in my oppinion) the worst thing you can do to a person, humiliating, hurtful and evil, I belivie those who do this deserve to meet the end of their dark and pitiful lives at the sharp blade of what is true goodness. There is no good way to look at this, if you belivie there is, than mabey you should just slit you wrists right now! I'm sorry, but I can't truly say I am. For example: "Brik is taken capture from a Elf Shadow Child, than raped. Feeling pure vengance, he inplales her and casts the Harm spell from a scroll."

24. Necrophilia, sex with the dead, is dark and dishonorable. I would wish to say that having sex with Undeath is that times 1.5. However, having an intamete moment with the soul and body of a Deathless you once loved living is romantic, creepy and disturbing, but romantic. For example: "Brik has an intamete moment with an Undying Captain he loved when she lived."

25. Beastiality, sex with animals, is not truly evil, just abnormal. I would say if you wish to have sexual relatons with another type of humanoid such as an Elf or a Dwarf id not exatly the most disgusting thing I've ever heard of. However, sexual relations with Goat or a Cow or animal that resembles nothing like a humaniod, or whatever you are. For example: "Herla chooses to have sexual relations with Brik, becuase she feels that he is close in personality, personalitly and cuase."

26. Drug Adiction/Alcoholism-Not the best thing, but it's probitly the least harmful evil thing ever. Addicton can be harmful to the user, but otherwise thats it. Though it is harmless, it cuase reactions that are otherwise evil and deadly. However, experamenting is more or less nuetral. Here is an example: "Brik tries the drug Redflower Leaf for the first time, throwing it up as he dosn't want it."

08-25-05, 10:38 AM A lot of the acts you mentioned are actually more chaotic than evil. We tend to think of things in black and white terms - that there's good on one side, evil on the other, and all actions fall into one category or the next.

I think the true nature of good and evil lies with intent. Well-intentioned acts may have bad consequences, such as when a paladin fires an arrow at a Balor and accidentally hits an ally. Is it an evil act? Not really. By the same token, an action taken with malicious intent might have beneficial consequences. Regardless of the results, I think its the intent that matters.

Telling a lie is more of a chaotic act than a good or evil one. A good-natured character might misdirect a band of orcs so that they go in the opposite direction from the town they actually want to destroy, giving the villagers time to escape. The intent of the action is decidedly good, but the action itself is chaotic.

In the same way, lawful acts can be used for good or evil purposes. An evil tyrant might use the full weight of the law to punish his critics, even to the point of using technicalities and loopholes to come up with the maximum punishment for even the smallest transgressions. Its evil to be sure, but the act itself is lawful.

cause though you the ends may be good... being exalted means you commit no evil act... the question is... is it alright to do something evil if the ends are good?

do the ends justify the means?

that is the moral question an exalted character has to ask himself whenever he is put into an even minutely questionable situation.

Lieing is not honorable, or good. Sadly, it tends to be like something you might hear in a church "lies are the devil's tools". They are wrong, they are "evil" and not exalted.

To understand the differences in evil and "vile" and good and "exalted" you have to read BOTH exalted deeds and vile darkness.

The key is to not go beyond the lines of exalted or vile. The line is very thin, sometimes even unnoticible at times, like you're lieing thing. Which actualy reminds me... you telling the demon of a "weak town" still has a possibility of getting people killed. Is the chance of puting down a single demon, worth the price of risking the lives of innocent people, no matter how strong they may be? By telling the demon of this place, no matter how strong they are, you are puting their lives at risk. Does being exalted mean you have the right?

Much of what you put can be seen as good or evil. I read them, and i can tell you if they are an evil act.

"stealing" the weapon from the man about to commit suicide is not stealing. It is simply disarming them of something that could cause them, or others harm.

Murder. That one is the most tricky one there is. To stay exalted you must give the person a chance to give themselves up and redeme themselves for commiting evil acts. No one ever HAS to be killed. There is ALWAYS another chance. An exalted character cannot kill another unless they have been known to do evil, and refuse to redeme themselves, or if they at that moment risk the lives of innocents.

An exalted character would even go as far as stoping his/her own party members from commiting evil.

I also dont beleive that casting protection from good is a bad thing at all. Sometimes good aligned people have ideas, or are tricked into thinking something is evil and therefor wanting to stop it. Though i do know that it has the evil description.

Consorting with evil is not an evil act at all. You cannot condem someone or soemthing without knowing for a FACT that it has commited evil acts in its past, and even then, there must always be the offer of redemption.

On the thoughts of hurting oneself. That is in no way evil, unless done to kill oneself. Alot of the time being exalted means harming yourself more than you harm another. Throwing yourself infront of the half-fiend that has done nothing wrong, but is about to be destroyed by an ally. Being exalted means that you must sacrifice your needs for those of another, even if it is a vile creature.

Also, causing yourself pain may be a way(in your's or your god's eyes) may be a way of atonement for your sins.

Addiction is not evil, it may often times lead to commitng evil acts to feed the addiction, but becoming addicted to something is not evil, unless the thing you are addicted to is itself evil. Being addicted to drinking unicorn blood is quite evil, though being addicted to say incense is not evil, unless they are like incense made from the blood of 13 virgins or something(i dunno, im just stabbing at the dark on this one).

Being exalted often times means doing the right thing even if it means hurting yourself. Other's needs are above your own. The means must ALWAYS justify the ends and vice versa. Lieing to a demon and supplying wrong information is evil, because it could cause harm to others. Though just because you dont lie, doesnt mean you have to tell the whole truth, though depending on how you do this, it may be considered evil.

Sorry for the long post, but i feltit was necessary to get the correct(atleast in my opinion) meaning of being exalted is.

And just to clarify. Just because you are good aligned, doesnt mean you have to be exalted. Exalted characters are ment to be the definition ofgood. The heart and soul of goodness in all its forms, without flaw.

Though just because you dont lie, doesnt mean you have to tell the whole truth, though depending on how you do this, it may be considered evil. Sorry for the long post, but i feltit was necessary to get the correct(atleast in my opinion) meaning of being exalted is. And just to clarify. Just because you are good aligned, doesnt mean you have to be exalted. Exalted characters are ment to be the definition ofgood. The heart and soul of goodness in all its forms, without flaw.
