hello,

for a while now i have this thought about a chaotic monk.. probably a halfling...

a little fella talking crazy, making strange jump, and can fight like a monkey. but more a monkey monk :P.

the problem is, that my DM has strict rules, and wants to keep the monk a lawfull character.

my question is, how could i make such a character, and still obey the rules.

You can still be chaotic in your acting. Lawful can be a lot of stuff: having a code of honor, obeying the laws.. Your character can obey the laws and have some monk's code, but can be chaotic in his actions. He can suddenly decide to take an action or change his looks from day to day. You can give very much different interpretations (sp?) to 'lawful'

If you also want to be chaotic in alignment, then your only option is to multiclass. Take a few lvls of monk and then swith to another class. Your halfling could have tried to be a monk but couldn't follow all those rules and codes, and thus left the monastery and took another class. (But this is harder to do at lvl1)

Hope this helps,

yeah, not sure what level you'd be starting out at, but you could always begin lawful and then change alignment ... either in game or in your character background if starting higher in level.

You may want to look into drunken monk since it has no alignment requirements, but you may have to start out as a monk to qualify.

there are some monk varient on community3e.com that don't have alignment restrictions, you might want to look at those

I would agree with your DM about having to be lawful to be a monk. Other than the mention of "talking crazy", what do you want to be able to do with your monks personality that has to be chaotic?? Your fighting style may appear chaotic to others, but like many martial arts, there is a method to the madness. Maybe you should grab the hero builders guidebook and take the alignment test as your monk and see which alignment you lean to. It might give you a better idea of what you want to do with him.

Be a human barbarian, with your two first feats being Improved Unarmed Strike and Improved Grapple. Or check in Unearthed Arcana, there are some barbarian variants with Improved Grapple or Improved Trip instead of Uncanny Dodge.

the background story is that he was reased in a monastary, but was send away, because he didn't follow the rules, and never attended to classes.

he ran away, and came to a barbarian tribe. as a half-ling he couldn't use the weapons used in the tribe, and with his low strength, and high dex, the only thing he could do was jump away from the weapons, and pich someone on painfull places.. even causing some damage. (1d4)

because of his chaotic nature, he can't be in a monastary to be trained, but the only way of fighting he knows is martial arts. he loves to pick a fight with criminals, and casino's and hookers, are his favorite places.

you should see him as an intelligent monkey, that likes to jump around, climbing in everything, and pick a fight.

a chaotic monk....

That doesn't sound like it would work if you wanted to keep putting levels in monk. You could start the game with all levels in monk and then gain levels in barbarian since you wouldn't be able to level up as a monk with your alignment.

You could talk to your DM into letting you be a chaotic ____ monk. But if I was DM I wouldn't let you.

The best way to be chaotic is to make some self imposed laws to offset your chaotic nature. Things like meditation at sunrise, will not harm children, will not drink any alcohol willingly, Etc. Then you could offset it by showing just how lawful you are inside.
