| Gamergeekgg09-10-04, 07:42 PM | I am currently Dming a Ebberon campain and of coarse a player of mine decided to be a warforged. Together, me and the player have created a decent background for the character but can't quiet think of a good name for him. (NOTE: if you don't know very much of the Eberron campain setting, warforged never had names until the end of the war and are either named by other races or search long and thoughtfully for a name) Here's the background. Created three years ago, before the destruction of Cyre, *blank* served the nation of Cyre in the Last War. *blank* was part of a warforged regiment that was to be positioned at a outpost of vital importance in the nation of Karrnath. On the second day of arriving at the Cyre outpost, the regiment was attacked by a legion of Karrnathi skeletons. The fight seige lasted for two days, *blank* was the only survivor. Bearing terrible news of the feirce battle in Karrnath, *blank* retreited back to Cyre only to find the desolate wasteland of what was the nation he loved. For a year *blank* endured the hostile enviorment of what is now called the mournland. Seeking to find any life like his old one, *blank* traveled to Breland, where many Cyre citizens fled to as refugees, when their beloved nation was destroyed. *blank* currently resinds in Sharn, the biggest city in Korvair. There's the decent background, the name should have some connection with his background. Thanks for the help. Also, feel free to submit request and/or suggestions for warfoged backgrounds and names. I would like to keed this thread going for longer than one day. |
| JosephKell09-10-04, 09:44 PM | Solo, Survivor, Remainder... Remainder might be the best as it can be shorted to "Re" or "Rem" |
| RadicalTaoist09-12-04, 07:52 PM | What is his combat style? The WF from that short story used a crossbow was named Pierce. Sword users could be named Edge. Axe: Chopper. Spiked chain/flail user: Spike. Or name him after a combat manuver; i.e. Enguarde, Rout, etc. |
| thinkhard09-12-04, 08:05 PM | maybe give him hard solid names like Clot, Rock, Ore, Bolts, Rivet, Ironface, Brawler, Crusher, Adamant, Metalfist...I dunno, things that make you simply think of big, strong machine thingies. |
| Malawain09-15-04, 05:35 PM | What's wrong with calling him Blank? Try combining two words that make up his background. He kills and he's almost a robot. So... KillBot. Seriously, I am going to be playing a warforged (I believe that every campaign starting in Eberron is going to have at least one) and I am simply designating a number as his name. It's not original, but it'll do since he wasn't really used in too many battles and that's the only indication of what he is (i.e. he has the number on his body somewhere, like his head or chest). That may not be much help, but I thought I'd share it. |
| JosephKell09-15-04, 06:25 PM | Killbot is a terrible name. It is like naming a PC Bob. It might seem funny, but it will come back to bite you. I think http://www.behindthename.com is a site that has a lot of names and stuff. check it out it uses various languages and such. |
| Malawain09-15-04, 09:44 PM | That was a joke. Sorry, I guess you can't write sarcasm over this. But I was serious about a number for mine, though. |
| allenchan09-15-04, 11:35 PM | Sprocket, Clank,... or Optimus Prime  |
| Lo77o09-22-04, 08:57 AM | Guardinal Forged Elvaron Cryer Doment Ethenal Invertenal Braust Min Roe Just a few names... pick one... or leave them... They are all names of former chars of mine.. "some Warforged even" |
| Malawain09-22-04, 03:04 PM | In the Eberron book it says that some of them do not have names. I thought that was cool because I am having a similar problem in naming my robot. I am just going to play and see what happens. |
| JosephKell09-22-04, 04:29 PM | Many Warforged are given names by non-Warforged that they have been around for a while. There is an Eberron adventure in Dungeon that has three or four Warforged NPCs in it. Their names are Ash, Blacksteel, Dandy, Copper... I think the Warforged's name depends on two main factors: (1) Occupation and (2) Theology. Warforged are pretty much split into two or three camps. Followers of the Lord of Blades, Independents, and those that just want to be told what to do (like they were in the Last War). Yes, that is right, some Warforged don't dispise being told what to do, as long as they are respected while it happens. - Followers of the Lord of Blades: The Lord of Blades is a Warforged Veteran that hates all "fleshies." The Followers of the Lord of Blades (even if they have never had contact with 'him') speak out for Warforged to rise up against the "fleshies" and in some occassions, attack non-Warforged. Followers of the Lord of Blades will probably have more forboding names. - Independants: Adventurer Warforged and others. - Those that still want to be told what to do: Just as the category says... It is easier to be told to tend the furnaces or lug around a load of iron. However, not having a name leads to a lot of problems (and it is just an over used cliche). You could always look up different minerals for their words in other languages (real or fictious languages). |
| Malawain09-22-04, 10:38 PM | I was merely pointing out that I was having similar problems and only expressed how I finally decided to deal with it. I do not see how it is an overused cliche when the CS is not even that old. (sorry, I do not know the exact date it hit shelves and only recently read some of its content). I have never played a game and not named one of my characters, but it was something of note in the book (I do not have it memorized, so I'll paraphrase) that they do not always (sometimes, yes, but sometimes no) have names. But if you're one of those picky people that have to "personalize" your character then take some words from latin, there are some cool sounding words and phrases there. Mortox Necrus Vioson |
| Edymnion09-27-04, 06:13 PM | Well, for a serious answer, we're going to need to know more about the Warforged in question. Did he take one of the body feats? And if so, Mithril or Admantine? What class is he? What is his primary weapon? I've got two WF characters personally, and their names came from the above questions. My first WF is a Barbarian, and I dubbed his raging as an "overdrive" ability. When he goes into a rage, flashy special effects happen, and he yells "OVERDRIVE!" as he flies into a killing spree. Hence, he's picked up the name Overdrive. My second WF is an Artificer/Fighter. Rather happy go lucky, he's got the Mithril Body feat, and uses a longbow. Using that, people have given him the name Bowman, and thats what he uses. I play with two warforged in other games. One uses a sledgehammer for a primary weapon, and is named Maul. The other is a WF Bard, named Harmony. Look at the WF in the ECS, and you find one named Relic. What you want is a one word name (usually) that describes the character. It doesn't have to be a name that a non-warforged would have, and is likely to be a name borrowed from something else. |
| ncc478109-28-04, 11:29 AM | I like the idea of calling "him" Blank but I also agree that you might what to take his feats and body type into account. I have a warforged druid named Doc. He wandered west to the Eldeen Reaches and meet up with the shifter community of Wolf's Paw. The took him in and he learned the ways of nature. He saved a young shifter's life when she was in an accident. He discovered that he had a talent for healing people. He beacme the thorp's secoundary doctor. Thats what they called him and the name stuck. |
| DV8N Coatrack11-01-04, 12:54 PM | let the pc's do it. i played a warforged, i sttod by another's pc's door and collected coats. When iwas alone i liberated them of their heavy money pouches and ran out the door. hence the party called me DV8N Coatrack when they found out. it was great. |
| Aramek11-01-04, 11:00 PM | I am currently playing as a Warforged dubbed "Zeke" As in Ezekiel. The foolish DM let us all take a flaw, and mine is "Mute". Cannot talk at all. I felt this as no problem really. But, on his left and right shoulders is the number #2517. No other markings distinguish him from a group. Just a large, silent, figure. They call me Zeke because of the number 2517. And it kind of fits. ^_^ Ezekiel 25:17 - "And I will execute great vengeance upon them with furious anger; and they shall know that I am the LORD, when I shall lay my vengeance upon them." After which Zeke beats them to a pulp with his heavy flail. |
| scrollreader11-02-04, 09:11 AM | Warforged in my group had a similar problem coming up with a name, and didn't want to take on the name of a bladed weapon (that seeming to be the modus operandi of the followers of the LoB.) So we talked for a bit, and I looked through the goblin words in the book. We decided on Zilog, a word I made up, goblin for "Iron Tower". He was an adamant body warforged, painted black, of maximum height/weight who used a tower shield and took combat expertise as his starting feat. It even practically wrote his backstory, and his presence at a major battle with the gobloinoids, and his sucesses there. He gets intimidations bonuses against goblins who recognize him. :P |
| Draco Strang11-03-04, 09:33 AM | I really think numbers are the way to go. When they were in the army, I'd bet they didn't have names, instead simple serial numbers and unit designations. Think "clone troopers". They probably had a unit designator, and then an individual number. For example Company A, Warforged 1156: Translates to A1156, and anyone he adventures with is sure to shorten that to A56, or even just call him "Six" Also, many famous robots have used their numbers as a designator. R2-D2: Artoo C-3PO: Threepio IG-88 The assassin droid R5-G8: Gate Those were all from starwars, and were actually viewed as companions by their owners. Except for IG-88, he was a bastard. *Bonus* If anyone can tell me who owned Gate, and where he appears in the Star Wars universe, I'll give you my lucky 5-sider, |
| Melpomene11-04-04, 08:12 PM | I had an (non-warforged) android in my group who named himself in Apskey. I think. Somethink like that. It was amusing. |
| scrollreader11-04-04, 08:27 PM | Also, many famous robots have used their numbers as a designator. :hoppingma :banghead: :hoppingma :headexplo :hoppingma :censored: Warforged are NOT robots. |
| Draco Strang11-05-04, 01:44 AM | This much is true...I know they're basically living breathing constructs. BUT.....constructs and robots share many of the same traits. Viewed as merely utility objects. They don't eat, sleep, breathe....etc....... Hell, they're even discriminated against. "No droids here" and "no constructs here" are probably posted in the same types of places...i.e. bars, restaurants.... |
| scrollreader11-05-04, 05:48 AM | Except Warforged have souls. And emotions. And can feel. And are not programmed. Nor can they be erased. They're not built using understood and well knwon technology, to be servants, with rules hard coded into their brain. They're a modern interpretation of an ancient secret, which somehow (and no one knows how) come with souls, and hopes and dreams and emotions. They weren't programmed, but rather, happened to be created with skills (from where? Nobody knoiws) and emotions that made them usable as weapons of war. You cannot take a warforged apart for pieces. You cannot put half of this warforged on half of that one. They're much more lik golems, than robots, and not really like either. I think you do them a great dis-service is you relegate them to 'droid status. |
| Draco Strang11-05-04, 05:47 PM | How am I doing them a dis-service by likening them to droids? Droids can have emotions as well. Hello....Data from Star Trek? And they ARE much the same in society. As I said....they're considered second class citizens. Warforged are discriminated against in some communities much like droids, (or in real life, and it's wrong, certain minorities are). I'm not trying to bash them, just put it in perspective. How else would a bunch of living constructs be treated after the war has ended? Hell, i bet most people would look at them with one of two attitudes: "Oh great, a bunch of frickin warforged...we dont need their kind." or "Hey, a bunch of frickin warforged, FREE LABOR!" Im suprised they were afforded their own free will after the war. that's why I'm thinking they were issued serial numbers or something when they were "created". How else would anyone keep track of them? They are pretty expensive units...I can't imagine just letting them run around amok and untagged, even if they are living, nonbreathing entities. Just my take on things. |
| nihility11-05-04, 06:22 PM | Also, how can you do a disservice to a fictional race? |
| Babs11-06-04, 08:16 PM | Killbot is a terrible name. It is like naming a PC Bob. It might seem funny, but it will come back to bite you. I think http://www.behindthename.com is a site that has a lot of names and stuff. check it out it uses various languages and such. Or check out http://www.babycenter.com/babynames for the great babyname finder. *koetj* *koetj* How's my little warforged doing? ;) |
| Nightlore11-09-04, 04:40 PM | The latin word for "Citadel" or "fortress" is what I would go with: "arx." |
| ILL34GL311-19-04, 02:13 AM | How about Pwenis, Taintlock or Phlappy Bagina? |
| Quarterstaff11-23-04, 11:30 AM | personnaly i liked to do things lik guardian of all who are helpless or goawah sheild of fath or sof bane of the evil or bote berserk blade of the almighty or bbota just think of somthing relevent to him of 3 words or more and use the first letters of each |
| Chaotica Maxima11-27-04, 01:55 PM | The party gave my Warforged the name Clank. Stupid Cleric bonking on my head with that staff. That nickname will haunt him forever...... Still, he could do worse, he could be called Killbot :P |
| dogo11-27-04, 11:52 PM | In the Eberron book it says that some of them do not have names. I thought that was cool because I am having a similar problem in naming my robot. I am just going to play and see what happens. That could work out well if the other players get tired of calling your character "the Warforged" and give it a nickname. |
| RickinNC11-28-04, 01:05 PM | I am too DMing an Eberron campaign, and our Warforged's name is Patsy. It was given to him by the Brelish soldiers he fought beside. And no... no coconuts are included with this warforged. ;) "Come, Patsy..." Rick |
| Azual11-29-04, 04:55 PM | let the pc's do it. i played a warforged, i sttod by another's pc's door and collected coats. When iwas alone i liberated them of their heavy money pouches and ran out the door. hence the party called me DV8N Coatrack when they found out. it was great. THat is KOOL :D |
| Nature-boy12-04-04, 02:10 AM | How about a warforged wizard named TI-83? |
| whitelightsaber12-08-04, 09:51 PM | How about Phase 3 for the phase 3 dark trooper? Or a nice interesting mechanical name like AG-1485X9 Then calling him X9 for short. Whitelightsaber |
| Raziel_Brokodar01-03-05, 02:24 PM | I am too DMing an Eberron campaign, and our Warforged's name is Patsy. It was given to him by the Brelish soldiers he fought beside. And no... no coconuts are included with this warforged. ;) "Come, Patsy..." HAHAHA! Anyway... the warforged in my party has some weird name... most of us just call him a bucket of bolts... and other terms refering to broken machines. |
| Temo Vryce01-06-05, 12:14 PM | Personally I would call him seeker. He seems to be searching for something that resembles his old life. |
| Xx Spider xX01-06-05, 11:11 PM | I say short and sweet : Tank |
| Falido01-08-05, 07:24 PM | How about a warforged wizard named TI-83? Spend a bit to much time with you calculator have you? |
| GoodTeletubby02-08-05, 11:50 PM | I really think numbers are the way to go. When they were in the army, I'd bet they didn't have names, instead simple serial numbers and unit designations. | Neluril Xor'alinn02-14-05, 04:02 PM | One Warforged I had was always a second in command. Reinforcing our charismatic Changling leader. So he ended up being called Minion. Or always go with HK-47 "Must have been meatbag error." |
| Jaxen72302-14-05, 05:35 PM | I have 2 WF characters A regular WF(Levex Litrix,Draconic for enchanted armor) and a WF charger( ID-10-T, for his low Intelligence) :twitch: . |
| theironfist03-02-05, 11:00 PM | This is my warforged background and name hope it helps. I am Tarmak the Tinker; I was created a long time ago to work the forge at The House Cannith. I was one of the first of my kind to become as those of flash and blood say living or alive. My creator found that he could make more of my kind if he employed my kind in most of the creation procedures. I was moved form the billows to assembly, where I learned about the anatomy of many creatures. I excelled at the assembly of constructs and of my own kind. I was later moved to the iron works, I learned how to shape and blend metals. I was taught how to read so that I could be used in the creation stage of assembly. Scrolls were given to me to be used during the creation stage. I secretly learned how to create scrolls and did so in my spare time. As the war progressed I was once again put into the iron works forge to create weapons. My creator then empowered the weapons with various powers; I quietly watched and learned as my creator worked. I studied him until he died. I decided to leave The House Cannith after my creator died and the house lord was kind in granting my request. It would seem that I had been working below so long that the lord did not even know I existed. The lord said that my faithful service to my creator had shown great loyalty and I should be free to do as I wanted with the rest of my life. I have spent several years helping the poor by creating plows, hoes, shovels, bows, knives, and the like to make what my creator called “Quality of Life” for the people he told me were most hurt by the war. As for the beliefs, “those of flesh” cling so tightly to I know better. I have seen the powers that are believed to be reserved for that follow a certain deity used by my creator. I believe in what I know, what can be proven or controlled. I say let the flesh rule the flesh I am a free being, beholding to none not even the Lord of the Blades. I have begun to miss the time I spent with my creator, though irrational and troublesome I long for the company of the fleshy life forms. |
