| CaptinKebler12-27-04, 06:53 PM | anybody out there have some ideas for a Sor/Rog/Ftr? i was thinking of makeing him either Human, Half-Elf, Elf, Drow, or a vampiric version of the before mentioned. any background, char motivation, or quirck ideas would be greatly appreaciated. |
| Kintara12-27-04, 10:44 PM | I know this isn't Character Optimization, but don't expect this character to be all that great of a spellcaster. Hmm, do you know anything about the campaign you're going to be playing in? Can you give some context to work with? What is it about those three classes that interests you? What do you want to accomplish with them? There's a lot of variability built into all three of those classes. |
| CaptinKebler12-28-04, 01:05 AM | well, as to the optimiztion- i only want the sor powers to renforce the ablities of the other classes, and to help out in any situation where the misc. powers of the arcane would come in handy. as to why those classes- ftr= i can last longer in a fight, rog= i can escape/start the fight, sor= can do what ever i want (with in reason... which crates it's own paradox, i know) with a mere thought. as to the camp- all i know about it that it's a lvl 12 camp... maybe lower. |
| Kintara12-28-04, 02:06 AM | Hmm, again, I'm gonna focus on stats for a sec because I need to to know where to go with the story. You might want to go with a ranged fighter. If you don't want to worry about ASL, you'll need to wear light armor (mithral Twilight armor [from the Book of Exalted Deeds] might be good). Anyway, so let's say you're a sneaky archer-mage. How about Arcane Archer? That would make you an elf of some sort. Since it's a high level game, we could make this Arcane Archer a few hundred years old. Maybe he's a long time protector of an ancient forest, and he used to lead an elite squadron of elven archers in defense of this holy site. But his comrades were slaughtered in a night raid by a team of Orcish assassins, who only defeated him by getting a doppelganger to act as an inside agent. The doppelganger poisoned him, and the Orcish assassins left him for dead while they burned the forest down and desecrated it. The poison was potent and magical, and it left his skin tinged a sickly green, but he recovered. So, with everything he worked to protect destroyed, he decided to see if he could track down and destroy the orcs responsible. All he knows is that the poison the doppelganger used is only made by the Cult of Orivus, about which you still know nothing. Or whatever.... ;) Edit: I just made up something specific because I'm not sure what you like. It's easier to help if I know more about what you like, and what you want to get out of your character. |
| Bas MacSagart12-28-04, 02:06 PM | I am one. I was born in a village deep in the mountains that is frequented by metalic dragons. I have learned, in my adulthood, that our association with the dragons extends back into the mists of time so far that nearly all of us have some quantity of dragon blood coursing through our bodies. As a child, I was a bit of an outcast...it seems that things kept happening around me, like while other kids would talk about the monsters in their dreams, the monster would appear at my side. (I later learned to control such illusions and have used such prestidigitation to earn a few coins performing in taverns.) Such situations frequently caused fights...but I learned that my concentrating I could stop blows before they hit me, much like the mages could. As an outcast, I quickly had to learn to survive...picking pockets or locks came easily to me, and I seemed to have an almost natural talent for avoiding dangers. That's probably why I've taken up adventuring. Most people don't care how you got here, just what you can accomplish with you wits and your blade. |
| CaptinKebler12-28-04, 05:34 PM | i really like these ideas... but im looking for something more like an assasin (wiether or not i can spell it), but i don't want to be evil... or good for that matter. in short... i want dark and brooding merc with a case of apathy. -sorry for the confusion about what direction i wanted to go in. |
| Vapthorne12-29-04, 02:36 AM | im looking for something more like an assasin (wiether or not i can spell it), but i don't want to be evil... or good for that matter. in short... i want dark and brooding merc with a case of apathy. If you want to do the dark, brooding apathic merc then you should ask yourself how did he become that way. A lot of the angst cases are born that; something triggered it. But it seems to me, what you're looking for is more like a thug? While, not evil, he's more like a local bully, maybe a gang member in some urban slum. Or often hired muscle for some higher-up criminal leader. He's sent to extort some gold coins out of the local marketplace. He may or may not enjoy it, but circumstances don't give him many options. Maybe he got that way after flunking out of magic school (or something like that); earlier in life, he tried so hard to be a truly great sorcerer but some tragidy made him fail miserably and he lost face in the eyes of his more-arcane peers. For build and stuff. I'll be brief. Human works best, since you'll be faced with multi-classing nightmares. Another suggestion, rather than use the Rogue/Fighter/Sorcerer; I'd go Sorcerer/Fighter while using the varients listed in Unearthed Arcana (if you have it). The Battle Sorcerer, and the Thug/Fighter (with sneak attack progression rather than the fighter bonus feats). You won't be opening any locks, and you're diplomacy will be done with clenched fists. Your spells, they'd be focused on stealth (Invis., Knock, etc.). You'll be fine with offensive cantrips + sneak attacks. |
| CaptinKebler12-29-04, 08:22 PM | thanks vap, but im not looking for a thug... maybe i have the wrong defination of brooding... im thinking assasin-like, so he would not be a bully becuase there too bruteish... im looking for something close to that but more sophisticated (nope... can't spell that either) any ideas on background i think would be the best place to start... bas, your story was okay but im looking for something that 1) does not frequintly use mithical creatures (ie dragons) and 2) one that is kinda unique (so borrowing your idea is not what i want to do). plus i want the usage of my spells to be somewhat reserved and secretive. i think i neglected to mention that magic is somewhat rare in my goups advanetures. using it to make money is a good way to brand yourself a demon! -thank you all for the help thus far, but i think we should turn our attentions to a background. figuring out why im what i am, how i got to be who im am, and why i act the way i do well help me take it from there. ideas of my own are few on this subject, as thus any more ideas on a backgrond will be very much welcomed. |
| Judging Eagle01-04-05, 01:27 PM | How about a rogue sorcerer only combo? That whole rog/ftr/sor combo seems like min-maxing unless you can come up with a viable way related to story to make them come together (Dipping into prestige classes is the height of bad roleplaying when making a char past level 1, PrCs represent organizations or special training.. dipping for one level to get proficiencies/maintain spell progression/keep BAB/get special abilites is ludicrous). Or a straight out Gish build (sorc/wiz, then some fighter, maybe a lvl or so of rogue then eldrich knight). I could see such a build being possible, start as a rogue (really high int, dex and con, then get skills (max at lvl 1 can get is I think 52 skill pts with lvl 1 human rogue with 18 int) or fighter for the feats and extra HP, then train a bit as a wizard or sorc then move onto the eldrich knight. I think that the best progression would be something like rogue 1 (for the skills) then fighter (for the weapon/armour proficiencies) then wizard then up eldrich knight then whatever other PrC fits in. Or you can also go Swashbuckler then sorc/wiz then eldrich knight. |
| JohnSnow01-04-05, 02:59 PM | thanks vap, but im not looking for a thug... maybe i have the wrong defination of brooding... im thinking assasin-like, so he would not be a bully becuase there too bruteish... im looking for something close to that but more sophisticated (nope... can't spell that either) So basically, you're think of a dark, gothic, assassin type (who's not necessarily evil). Is that about right? The best way to develop a character is to think about this not in terms of what character classes you want, but in terms of what abilities you want the character to have. Then you go through all the abilities you want this guy to have at 12th level and how you want him to act. And THEN, you make a list of potentially good character class combos. So far, I've heard you say: 1. You want to be decent in a fight. 2. You want to be "sneaky." 3. You want to be a "sophisticated" assassin-type. 4. You want magical abilities you can turn to in a pinch. So, we're looking at medium to good combat classes, with a decent skill list and some "tricks" up their sleeves. Offhand, I can think of a few. Bard - This is okay, but it doesn't exactly work with the "thematics". Swashbuckler (CW) - Good combo of combat, skills and sophisticated, but also not exactly "brooding." Ranger - Also a decent class for brooding types, but lacks the spell list. "Woodsy" theme may not be the best fit, but some DMs will let you tweak. Rogue - The great "catch-all" class. Might be useful for rounding out. Fighter - good at combat, but not much else. The Unearthed Arcana "thug" variant (a rogueish fighter with more skills) is more appropriate. Sorcerer - the catch-all class for magical powers. Not always great on flavor though. Warlock - Ahhhh, the warlock. A creepy sorcerer-type that tends to be brooding. His spell abilities are less versatile, but are usually available when needed. Think of how this character acquired his abilities, and in what order. Did he learn to cast spells first and then wind up on the streets because his mentor was killed? If magic is usually "bad" (i.e. rare and secretive) in the campaign, it's possible he's had to hide his abilities. If you really want to keep with the fighter/rogue/sorcerer mix, consider a fighter/rogue/sorcerer/PrC mix. And make sure to keep at least 2 of those base classes within a level of each other. Post more of your thoughts. |
