I have a character hell-bent on revenge for the death of his father. He doesn't want to live but feels as if he can't die until he has revenged his father's death.

After a long time of searching for the killer, he finally finds him. The killer was an upstart assasin when he killed the boy's father but is now at the top of his game, driving fear into everyone's hearts.

The boy meets with the assasin around the age of 17 or 18 (he's 12 when his father is murdered) and the assasin in his low 30s.

What weapons would best describe/match each of these characters? I was thinking dagger and shortsword or double dagger for the assasin, but as for the boy, I'm a little stuck. I want something unique, and I want him to dual-weild.

I like the look of the sickle, but I can't see what weapon could work off of it in combat. Probably a shortsword? But then, I also like the length of the longsword, but it doesn't seem to match up with the sickle like I would prefer.

Any ideas?

how about scimitars? can be dual weilded, similar size to shortswords, but a bit more exotic and unique.

The assassin would be a high level (maybe even a level 10 assassin...) so he would have access to some pretty powerful items. I'd say give the Assassin the following:

2 Daggers (+3 , Speed)
1 Blowgun (+1 , Poison)
2 Manacles (Masterwork +1)

The boy... now that would depend. Does he come from a rich family (most likely, since his father was the target of an assassin.), or possibly a farming family (a competitor farmer hired the assassin so that he could make more profit..).

If the boy came from a rich line, he would probably have access to moderately nice weapons. I'd say:

A +1 Masterwork Dagger or a +1 Masterwork Shortsword

If you want him to dual weild... I'd go with 2 Daggers (+1 Masterwork).

If the boy did come from a poor background, you could possibly go with the Kama's (sickle-like), or the most original farm-handy tool: the scythe.

Good luck - sounds like an interesting storyline.

Longswords or Broadswords are Avangers, but Maces are Judicators. If you want revenge, theres nothing better than a Brutal Axe or Halaberd!

Halberd would also be a good choice. For your character to really rejoice in the retribution that he delivers - it's gotta be messy :D

Well there are a lot of options. I fully agree with everyone's opinions towards the Assassin, As for the boy. dual scimitars have always seemed a little over done. :P Dual daggers would be an obvious choice, but if you choose to go in that direction I'd go the extra mile and go with dual Kukris. They do the same damage, have a greater crit threat range, and have an exotic flavor. :) It's a triple threat. Not as good as scimitars, but as i said i find they are over used. Just my opinion if you want scimitars go right ahead.

i was always a big sickle fan. a nice unique and underused flavor and look. A flail would be good for the boy, flails always had a certain revenge pinash for me. i like the idea for the kukris though too.

If I was that kid, my weapon of choice would be my father's sword or whatever other weapon that he wielded in life.

It makes great thematic sense, and sets up a really cool confrontation scene where the avenger brandishes the weapon in question and asks if the assassin recognizes it. The assassin is bound to recognize the weapon and ask why the hell he has it, at which point the avenger reveals himself as the son of the guy the assassin murdered and declares his intent to make him pay for his father's death.

I think swords and sword-like weapons (dagger, scimitar, ...) are often used for a good, clean fight. If it's revenge you want, I think you'l want something more brutal : axe, hammer, morningstar, mace, ... thant kind of weapons.

In any case : NO ranged weapons, you don't take revenge from a distance, you want to see the target's eyes and hear him breath his last breath and say some smartass remark when he dies.

If the character has enough money, it has to be a bane-weapon. You can also make it flaming (to represent your inner rage) or make it deal cold damage (to represtent the cold-hearted target).

Suggestions:

Interlocking shortswords/doublesword.

Katar (punching dagger) or Torade (or whatever the more weaponlike form of the nekode were called)

If you wanna get reeeeal messy, look in the oriental adventures book. There's a weapon there that is used to subdue opponents by grabbing their clothing with metal hooks. Now, modify those hooks to actually do damage.

Two sickles and have Nerull follow him around for a bit and see what comes of it. ;) Kukri are always nice, but I think the best bet is to take the Exotic Weapon Prof. for the Bastard sword and weild two of them, running at the assassin to slice him into pieces. I don't think there's anything scarier than seeing a man with two swords that are just a bit too big for him to weild like that. (Of course, you suffer some pretty major penalties, but when you do hit it should get the point across )

My choice Weapon of Revenge: Scythe. You're playing Death, might as well look the part.

Like other people said: it depends on where your character is coming from. If he's from a (semi)rich family he can afford all kind of weapons and you should probably pick two swords/daggers, as they are the most commonly taught dual-wielded weapons to wealthy-born. If he has had any kind of weapons-training outside his childhood it doesn't matter, since you can choose what you want.

My personal favorite are dual-wielded warhammers (blacksmith's son) to smash the assasin's head. For those of you who know warhammer picture the first Valten model shown here (http://uk.games-workshop.com/empire/characters/11/)'
It's be all nice and gory since you don't want a nice clean kill, you want revenge!!
What you don't want is: range attack weapons (as told, it should be up close and personal) or scimitars (come on: kill the assassin with dual-wielded scimitars...?? Next someone will tell you that you have to paint your face black and die your hair white

Bah! Stereotypical. Might as well give the kid a bastard sword, call him The Groom, and send him on his merry way. I say train the kid as a monk (the local monastary could have taken him in) and let his hands do the talking.

Why do you want the boy to dual wield? I think revenge is best served with one powerful weapon. A scythe in particular (for this scenario) would be quite symbolic, not to mention imposing. Then again, that's just my opinion.

I would humbly suggest a handaxe as the boy's off-hand weapon. It's light, easy to come by (even for someone of a poor background) and it's messy. Seriously, I bet you've never heard of anyone referred to as a sword-murderer or knife-murderer.... but axe-murderer? Now you're talking. 40 whacks with a wet noodle.

Well I'm the ninja freak so I say give both boy and assassin a katana each or give the assassin two just to make it a challenge for the boy. The boy has had time to train with the weapon.

LOL

Great film,

Sickles sound good,
I have a character whose father was killed and with his dying breath he made his son swear never to use a sword, manufactured weapon so he ended up becomeing a 1/4 staff user.

I'm making a ranger for the campaign i'm joining, so i gave this subject some thought. This is what i'm going for, see if it fits your character as well:

Longsword and unarmed strike.
Think how awesome it would be to literally kick the assassin's ass between swings!
"Evil awaits my bootprint!"

(I know unarmed doesn't do much damage, but i just think it is awesome)

assuming the boy gains some sneaky abilities, an interesting twist would be that the boy becomes more assassin like to defeat the assassin. a little cliche, but have the boy use the same weapons the assassin uses... a duel to the death between two opposites with the same weapons and same fighting styles... think dark jedi and good jedi, same weapons (just different colors)...
Xambaru

Do you want it to be a fight by the rules? Or just that the boy wins in a dramatical way. In that case you could go for a club or mace thingy knock the assasin to the ground and than he can choke him with his bare hands. This wouldnt work in a fight by the rules though, but killing him with bare hands is awesome and gives great satisfaction for the boy.

Let us know what it will be.

have him anguish at the kind of world he lives in -- the kind of world that would take fathers away from sons... then make him a hulking hurler (ala CO boards) and destroy that world.

I'm with Boarfury and Xambaru. Bare hands is the best way to go. However, I'm not sure if Monk really gives the best flavor for this... Some alternatives to consider in a variety of combinations would be:

Bear Totem Barbarian. Rage is good. Improved Grapple for free, plus bonuses to grapple checks while raging is even better.

Reaping Mauler. No, YOU save or die. Extra choking and strangling goodness.

Fighter. Bonus feats are bueno.

Kensai. You can enchant your fists, get a +8 to your strength for a limited time, and the downside is... You have to devote yourself to a cause?

Frenzied Berserker. Don't make me angry. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry.

The "Earth's Embrace" feat from CW is something good to think about as well.

Monk's Belt magic item would make your grapple damage lethal and give you a d8 instead of a d3.

Of course, some Monk could be good, particularly if you want to go Kensai instead of Barbarian or Berserker.

if you really wanna get into it, you could dual weild a two handed weapon... say a scythe, flail, greatsword, ect. and have a few levels of monk, and use a kick as your "offhand" attack(it is technically at full strength because monks dont have an offhand attack when going unarmed).

it would be pretty cool to kick the assassin around a few times, kneeing him in the gut, roudhouse to the face, and then bringing down the greatsword over your head to deliver a powerful blow.

levels of fighter and monk would work with this, and if you want to get into it you could go shou disciple so you could use the greatsword in a flurry.

Armor Spikes and Unarmed Strikes(Gauntlet). Make him a Fighter so he can get specialization in both and make sure he's got a Monk's Belt. Mabey enchant the armor spikes and gauntlets with wounding or vicious, or something else suitably nasty.
Ensjak

07-14-05, 02:28 PM
I think the guy with the armor spikes had the right idea. But the scourge just seems like a nice "No quick death for you" weapon.

And vicious on any weapon goes along with your whole boy not wanting to live aside from revenge theme.
Amphetryon

I'd go with Light Flail and Punching Dagger for an interesting combo of demoralization and revenge. Round one, Improved Disarm the assassin. Round 2, Improved Trip the assassin and stab with the dagger. Round 3, whack and stab at him, while explaining, calmly, why he's being killed.

The weapon you choose really has to do more with the persona you're trying to develop for the kid.

For example, you're going up against someone who's far more powerful than you are. You know he favors daggers. What would you choose? Here are some answers that someone who cools down long enough to think about it might choose.

1. Crossbow bolt. Poisoned. Fired from extreme range in ambush.

2. Something with reach. A spear perhaps. Halberd also good. Poisoned. Preferably Vorpal too.

3. Study Necromancy and rip him to bits with a swarm of undead. Coincidentally, this also lets "dad" see the payback. And maybe participate. Then you bind his soul and the REAL revenge starts.

4. Monkness is overrated. You want to have armor enchanted with Heavy Fortification to be immune to that Death Attack and assorted Sneak Attacks. If you're going the bare hands route, go Bear Warrior and Warshaper. Maybe with some Reaping Mauler mixed in.
