I'm considering playing a CG Human Were-Heyena Ranger in my next campaign. We start at lvl. 6. He'll be an natural lycanthrope, so +3 LA, 2 Animal HD, and one level of ranger.

For my backstory, I'm thinking along the lines of he was born into slavery under a group Gnoll slavers (one of whom happened to be a were-heyena, a common affliction among Gnolls in my DM's campaign (or, at least it is now due to my char's background) due to their heretage). My character's lycanthropy was a result of one of his parent's escape attempts. The slavers found themselves on the wrong side of the law in a poorly planned "slave auction" that was actually a set-up planned by my soon to be fellow pc's. My character took advantage of the cituation and led the other slaves (mostly elves, humans and some orcs) to revolt against their masters.

What do you guys think? Any suggestions on how I should play him, or any things to consider? Any helpful advice or constructive criticism is more than welcome. Thanks in advance!

So far, the campaign hasn't started yet, and the aftermath of the slave uprising is where we're starting. I'm mostly tagging along with the group because they saved me and they needed another fighter (they're a mercenary company). The main driving force of the group (other than money) is to satiate the Gnome Beguiler's obsession with The Shadowstaff artifact (preferably by obtaining it). The rest of the group consists of a Dwarven Fighter-Cleric and a Half-Bronze Dragon Battle Sorcerer (this is a pretty high magic campaign).

For the past two posts, replace all instances of Heyena with Hyena... Sorry about that

Are were-hyenas naturally predisposed to a CG alignment? With any lycan you have to consider alignment. As was the case with my werewolf ranger. I had to create a backstory that relieved him of the necessity to stray toward evil. Werewolves in almost all cases are evil so i was unable to play him as good unless there was an explanation. Mine was that he made a pact with an evil creature that was more than he anticipated, therein giving my DM plenty of leeway. As far as hyenas go im not sure what the alignment criteria is, but im pretty sure hyenas arent generally considered good. Hope this helps ya a bit. Also, as i did, youll have to consider the cleric in the party. Thats not even mentioning how well its going to go when you first ....hmm lemme see....hyena out. Party dynamics are always fun.

I think the fun in playing a lycanthrope is in letting your animal side out, even when you look ostensibly human.

I imagine a hyena would be tough and patient, but also mean and bullying.

Something fun to think about might be that, in Spotted hyenas anyway, the females are very dominant over the males (and they have surprising anatomy - look it up), so maybe your character could be a tough, brazen female warrior - or an outwardly-mean male who is unreasonably scared of women. Or something.

You should definitely have a crazy laugh, anyway.

Interesting fact: Hyena laugh only when they are afraid or on the defensive.
So I suggest giving your character a habit of laughing crazily when he's threatened.

As for the alignment restrictions, yes I had considered them. However, my DM think's they're bull (as do I, but it's his call) and said that my character's alignment should be based on his personality, not any affliction he may have. I personally feel that the lycanthrope alignments are just a way for WotC to perpetuate folklore in the hopes of winning over those fans that get all angry when "you can't play a good werewolf, according to these ancient hungarian scripts that i carry around everywhere to make myself seem smart and knowledgable despite my low self-esteem, werewolves are evil" blahblahblah. Anyway, my werehyena is CG (actually, I did look up some info on hyenas, and found that they are actually very benevolent twords each other; each doing his part for the pack. very similar to wolves).

As for the laugh: yes, it is a defensive mechanism used to confuse the enemy and call out for help or to warn the pack. But my character, while having an annoying laugh normally, also laughs nervously whenever on the defensive.

I don't know anything about the female dominance in hyenas, but it doesn't sound far-fetched (I believe tigers are like that as well, and in lion dens the females do all the work and are actually much more formidable than the males at... well, everything). I'll look into it, could be an interesting quality to give to my character.

Thanks for all the help so far guys, keep it coming!

First of all let me start off by saying.....unnecessary. I was trying to help you in your question. Also its a good hook to go along with these things. It gives your DM something more to throw at you. If hes not interested in that sort of thing he may (and im not saying he is) miss out on an opportunity to give your character the limelight it deserves. As far as not taking my advice. You are well within your rights to not do so, but it seemed harsh to lump me in with the lore *****s. I agree it comes down to what your DM says is allowable, but to a certain extent they ARE monstrous....so therefore the rules setup is in place for a reason. Also it pushes you to come up with a far more fetching storyline than....im a were-creature...i exist blahblahblah. Now i understand the house rules thing and i employ it in my games as i am a DM and a player (as are most if not all DMs) and enjoy the ability to screw with the rules a bit, but i have to say that with races and or afflictions theres usually no need to. As far as your chaotic good were-hyena goes, he seems like he has a lot of potential. (not to mention the fact that im a were creature fanboy) (oh wait...i mentioned it) All i was trying to do, as it was a character development board, was trying to throw out some thing to think on concerning said were-creatures storyline and or quirks and issues. I appologize if i in some way hit a nerve with the whole alignment thing, but it is in most cases something that does make a difference to a DM. You on the other hand have a liberal DM....so i again appologize and will attempt to refrain from answering your posts in the future, as i am apparently too rules ***** inclined. (which i really didnt think i was)

Hmm, I'm not sure Doomed_Penguin meant to include you in his mini-rant there, Irish. His tone seems pretty friendly...

Anyhoo, I've been thinking about Hyenas...

Fun fact:hyenas, both male and female, often greet each other with an extended bout of 'phallic inspection'. This would be fun if your character chooses to do this instead of shaking hands, etc.

"And this is His Excellency the Duke of Thazzick, who... BY ALL THE GODS, MAN, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!?"

I'm sorry. I wasn't trying to call you out there. The guy I was refering to is (well, was now...) in our group, and is constantly trying to point out our flaws in historical accuracy (which he knew even less about than we did). I wasn't criticizing you there, and if I came across that way, then I apologize. You made a good point bringing up alignment as it pertains to lycanthropes; normally it's something that I would have missed myself (if I hadn't completely devoured the lycanthropy entry in MM in order to make a hyena version). I guess I just didn't reread my post and notice how you could have missed me changing subjects like that. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

I like that, but every time I'd do it, it would just remind me of that scene from Dr. Dolittle... That'd kind of make me feel like a sellout or something (not to mention the jokes I'd get about it from the guys in my group who go to my school... which would be all of them). Though he'll definitely have some animalistic traits, such as growling whenever he's angry at someone.

In older literature, hyenas were thought to be homosexual, largely in part due to their...ummm...large parts. The physiology of the female hyena is...interesting. Jump onto wikipedia.com

Yeah, I think the character will be interesting enough without bringing the Book of Eroctic Fantasy into it, lol.

thank god for courtesy!!

i thnk the guy should work well in a pack seeing as how most canine animals work together in packs. insnt there like a skill somewhere that determines if you can resist the takeover of the lycanthropy? i like the fear of women idea.

Yeah, Control Shape. It's in the back of MM1, under feats. However, only afflicted lycanthropes need it. Natural lycanthropes (like my character) have complete control over their shape, and can change at will (as a standard action) without making a skill check or will save.

I too love the fear of women and nervous laughing ideas. Definitely good flavor.

Given you were *born* into slavery and helped the escape that the party set you up for, I'd say that leans towards a CG or at least a CN alignment (the latter if you choose to have your character be jaded from his experiences). I'd recommend a fierce tendency to defend others from having their freedom taken away, playing a bit like a Paladin of Freedom variant. You're at home in the wilds and get along quite well with Barbarians, who share your free-spirited and primal nature. You hit it off well with other Rangers and with Druids, and I'd play up suspicion of arcane casters and city-types like Rogues.

My two cents, at least, pick and choose what you think's worthwhile.

The psuedo-paladin of freedom thing was _exactly_ what I was going for. But I personally think a chaotic paladin is oxymoron-ish. Plus, ranger works a lot better for the whole lycanthropy thing (and scent + track = fun). But yeah, my char. is chaotic good because he feels the need to help any other slaves or (unjust) captives, and is highly suspicious of anyone holding a position of authority. He's not very afraid of rogues, as they tend to resent authority as well. In fact, he is not very suspicious of any particular class, and is fairly open minded (though extremely slow to trust anyone). However, anyone who is lawful evil he'll practically attack on sight. And he's especially suspicious of those who are lawful neutral. He finds them to be... frustrating, for lack of a better word. He hates the idea that they would follow something so rigidly that they would commit evil acts by it, even if they aren't evil themselves. He sometimes finds this even more disturbing than lawful evil, as even lawful evil characters often aren't so rigidly set in their ways.

Also, his wisdom score is fairly high (17, with the +2 lycanthropy bonus), so I don't think that a jaded personality really fits his stats. And if he was CN, he probably wouldn't have tried to save the rest of the slaves, just his own skin (especially considering the risks said battle involved, what with mostly unarmed slaves and about half of them being too weak, old, or young to be combatants as well).

I always thought it was interesting the hyena's are canines, but more closely related to mongooses or merekats, maybe something like that as a pet would be interesting flavor. THough everytime I think of small aniamls as pets in D&D I think of Boo...any way my two bits on the whole idea, which by the way I love. Might think about Animal Lord(hyena Lord) for a PrC later on

I hadn't considered animal lord... but it's not really my character's style. He's not so much obsessed with hyenas as he has an affinity with them. Though he'll almost definitly have a hyena animal companion (when I hit ranger lvl. 4).

Hyenas are one of the only few kinds of animal that can actually digest bone, have him not bother to eat around the bones when eating any sort of meat that is served without the bones being removed (such as many chicken dishes).

Actually, despite appearances, Hyenas arn't Canines, they're Hyaenids, which are more closely related to felines than canines.
