Here's my new character for a game I'll be playing in.

Comments?

Sitting in lotus position on a rather large rock, Angus breathes quietly while the soft wind stretches out a few stray strands of black hair. Large and muscular, his bare chest is covered with thick dark hair, and many white scars stick out from the mass. His skin is a warm combination of dull browns and yellows.

Beside him sits a large backpack, and a huge set of beautiful (but obviously travelled) war bagpipes. On your approach he hops off the rock and lands softly, looking at him you think the ground should be shaking, but he moves with a grace and poise beyond the reach of even a cat.

His eyes find yours immediately, large and bright, the yellow irises shrink. His mouth stretches into a wide grin, showing clean and even teeth. For a strange mix of races he's oddly attractive and has a strong presence. He stands up straight, reaching at least 8 feet tall. He runs his large callused hands through his hair gently, then smoothes out his kilt. He says hello in a strange mountain accent, a voice deep and powerful, but warm and kind.

Angus was raised by the monks of Pholtus. More specifically, a splinter cell dedicated to their own interpretation of the deity Pholtus, that practices its religion in the mountains. Angus was born to a young woman named Sophia, of a barbarian tribe in the area. The tribe was attacked and all were killed except Sophia who was out gathering food. An Ogre scout tracked Sophia all the way to the mountain passes where she fled from the melee far below. The Ogre found Sophia and raped her, but the Ogre was killed by a pair of monks who were meditating on the mountain. Sophia was safe, but pregnant, and carried the child to term, only to die giving birth to the young child. Her wish (which she voiced to the monks often) was for them to raise the child into their society and teach it their ways. Sophia was fascinated by the monk culture and got along quite well with the people of the monestary.

Angus was born and embraced fully by the monks, who took quite quickly to the athletic aspect of training due to his incredible strength and flexibility. Though more mentally astute and capable than many young apprentices, Angus was quick to anger and had an inner rage that almost ended his training.

One day, a caravan was traversing the mountain passes, and an old, down and out bard was travelling with the group. Angus was with the welcome group and took an immediate liking to the old bard, who's wanderlust and chaotic spirit seemed so in tune (sorry) with Angus. Unbeknownst to the caravan and the monks, the bard (who's name was Carlisle) came to the mountains of his birth to die, and Angus visited the bard on his mountain vigil every morning, bringing soup and coffee (the main export of the monks). The monks believed Carlisle to be a bad influence on Angus, but turned it to his advantage. Carlisle taught Angus to play the bagpipes and secretly constructed a beautiful instrument for him (to scale) that he left for Angus, which he found the morning Carlisle died. The monks used the instrument in Angus' training, amazed at how much it calmed and soothed Angus after combat training. Angus played for hours, meditating with the instrument, the only thing that could bring his adrenaline down.

Angus would eventually leave the monestary at the age of 20, after hearing about another Ogre raid on a barbarian village. His goal, implanted since before his birth, to calm the bloodlust of the Ogres and bring order and peace to what he believes to be a strong and noble race of people. Angus has been trying to mend the dangerous ways of his kin, but has been finding it difficult, many times having to result to destroying them. Striking against his kin with a vengeful and frightening ardour. Constantly trying to maintain his composure, Angus flirts with the dark chaotic forces of his nature, trusting in his training to keep him capable.

Angus travels the lands, trying to make peace with both his kin, and himself.

Nice history! However, since his mother seems to be human, Angus must be an half-ogre, not an ogre.

Again about his mother, it is easy to have her die while giving birth to him. Perhaps should she still be living, and working at the monastery?

Very cool character!

Angus must be an half-ogre, not an ogre.

He is. See:

I agree with Morka- keep his mother alive, but working at the monastary. Have her worry at him, have expectations of him, etc. Let the DM use that relationship to add depth to the character. Dead mothers are to easy to come by.

Good story. When it started, mentioning the bagpipes, I was convinced there'd be a level of bard thrown in somewhere, but no...

Well, of course, just because someone plays an instrument, doesn't make them an immediate bard, but I was jsut noting my first impression.

Anyway, as I said, nice story. However, there was one bit that made me smile:

... only to die giving birth to the young child

Could someone explain to me how birth is given to a child that isn't young? ;)

Sorry, I was looking for the word "Half". Didn't notice the ½.

Actually I was going to have Angus' mother live, however, I thought about it for a bit and realized: "She may be a Barbarian woman, but I really doubt she'll live through childbirth. That's one big baby."

I get the impression that they probably had to perform a cesarean section just to get Angus out, and she died.

Any other comments? Suggestions?
Thanks so far folks.

I don't see how his mother could have lived. She gave birth to an enormous ogre baby from her human womb. Either she would have died, or he would have been very premature.

That's what I was thinking.

You can always find a reason around that. Maybe the child is only slightly larger than normal babies. He could gain most of his mass shortly afterwards, growing at a very high rate. Or maybe he even remains almost normal size and start growing like mad in early adolescence.
