ok let me begin with a story.

way back about 2 years ago i was playing a hobgoblin gladiator in the return to the temple of elemental evil. at that time i was lawful neutral.

well we had an elven mage in the party. this elf was a little different. he'd been adopted and raised by an old hermit that lived in a shack in the woods. being raised by humans this elf shared in their outlook on life, not the typical way an elf sees the world. he related well with humans but not so well with real elves.

one day the party stumbled into his yard, badly injured. he used first aid and healing herbs to treat their injuries and as he listened to their tales of how they got there. with growing excitement he asked to join in their adventures.

well after a fight with a young dragon and some ghouls this sadly min/maxed character met his end fighting some lowly coctrices. the hobgoblin was the only survivor of this encounter.

when exploring options we learned that there was no process of removing the petrification that we could afford that would allow the elf to survive. So i decided that it was time for my hobgoblin to finally set his plot in motion.

i took the petrified mage into verbobonc and found a rather shady individual who would cast continual flame on him. (this by the way was revenge for a rather poorly timed use of burning hands, stupid fireball mage wannabe.) i then found an evil cleric and sold the newly created everburning mage as an art object to decorate his temple. the evil cleric was rather pleased with expresion of absolute horror that was eternally frozen on the elfs face.

if anyone is interested i got 50,000 gp out of that little transaction.

This was a first time dm, the player whom the elf belonged to and myself had both spent most of are gaming careers dming and didn't want to this particular time. what i'm getting at here is that the other player went along with this.

while the dm fumed at use for totally screwing up his plans we talked about how many great hooks could come out of this.

what if the mage was aware of all that was transpiring around him, and after spending decades in an evil temple he learned some of their rights. what if he then in his insanity accepted the evil god as his own, then what if he found away to de-petrify himself and set out to get his revenge.

well sadly that gaming group is now longer together, but i decided i'd like to pursue this story anyway. ultimatly he gains his freedom, and creates a disease that turns everyone into a small town into zombies. (think night of the living dead here) There were only 2 other people in the party besides him. the above mentioned hobgoblin, and a dwarf that was a paladin or moradin.

I see this character harboring a special grudge against moradin because he thinks that the paladin should have been better able to protect him.

i envision this character using a good amount of fire magic as the original character did, to fit in with my story he needs to have good necromantic abilities. and finally i think he should retain some traces of the original petrification. I'm thinking of giving him a natural armour. maybe some construct traits. like what if he was somekind of living stone golem.

so the big question is assuming he took up the god of the evil cleric that bought him, what god would most likely fit the bill?

also any other suggestions for the character would be welcome.

You could perhaps use the stats for a Warforged, with a bit of fire resistance? Or the Blazing Bones (http://www.enworld.org/cc/converted/view_c.php?CreatureID=386), an undead created when a wizard is killed by his own flames.

You probably need a god with an affinity toward fire and/or stone. The elf was probably sold to a completely different god. Perhaps the temple where the elf was has been abandonned, and a few years later, the influence of this god faded, so the fire/stone god was able to reach the elf.

Kossuth should be a great god for this, but he's not evil.
Perhaps Velsharoon. He should be very happy to have a new form of intelligent undead.
Hoar, as the god of vengence, could be good.
Amara (http://oracle.wizards.com/scripts/wa.exe?A2=ind0003E&L=realms-l&P=R6633&D=0) is an unofficial, CN goddess of volcanoes. It could be good.
