| TheNox04-03-06, 03:01 PM | since so many sorcerer's have draconic blood nowadays i wanted to be different and do something else so, is there anything else a sorcerer would get his power from? also does anyone know any cool (and confusing) monk sayings? all i could think of was "is you already relize the candle light is fire the meal was cooked along time ago". |
| Shaggy_Shaggs04-03-06, 07:46 PM | Eh, there's a lot of room for fluff adjustment on a sorcerer, just go with what interests you - innate power's got a lot of possibilities. One angle I particularly like (and am using for one of my own sorcerers, a guy with some psychological issues) is being slightly out of touch with the world around him. As the DM for this character (who also has great luck and gets natural 20's raining all over his checks) says, "[He] doesn't actually have any magic, it's just that he thinks he does, and the world humors him." (Or as I say, he's so damned crazy it warps reality in his vicinity.) Think of some illusions, how they work as if they're fully real unless you manage to disbelieve them, then they have a different effect or don't affect you at all - imagine what might happen if you managed to successfully disbelieve reality. I think that's how some sorcerers come into existance. |
| Dex04-04-06, 07:49 AM | How Sorcerers get magic? Any. Way. You. Want. Monk sayings? Try the "1001 Sayings to Shock the Natives" thread |
| Orchomenos04-04-06, 11:40 AM | You could have Fey blood. Or Giant blood. Or Outsider blood. Or Hag, Yuan-ti, or any other monstrous humanoid with affinity to magic. If you have Unearted Arcana, check the part about bloodline; simply consider you have a bloodline less apparent than "lesser", but you are working for this. (If you don't have the book, check the Hypertext D20 SRD (http://www.d20srd.org/index.htm), there's a section for the bloodlines). And remember, a bloodline is not necessary because one of your ancestor was a monster, it wouldn't work for some creatures. But one of your ancestor could have live a long time amongst those monsters, getting some taint. |
| Crimson_Concerto04-04-06, 07:51 PM | A sorcerer's power can come from WHEREEVER yOU WANT! Maybe he's descendent from dragons? Maybe from an elemental? Maybe his dad was a Wizards, and that magic tainted his blood so that his child could do it innately? Maybe your sorcerer was bitten by a radioactive spider? |
| Kuraito04-04-06, 08:02 PM | Indeed, sorcerers powers can come from anywhere. You don't even have to say where. Just say "Because I say so." and BAM, sorcerer. The reasons are completly flavor based and sometimes its fun to not have an established source of power. I like Shaggys idea to, just don't expect the DM to grant you a will save when this happens: DM: "Ok then. The dragon charges, forgive me, POUNCES on your soft magey flesh, using all his attacks..." PC: "Uh....I disbelieve?" DM: "Not this time buddy." Unless you have autohypnosis. Autohypnosis is like Fabreeze, it solves everything. DM: "Ok then. The dragon charges, forgive me, POUNC" PC: "No he doesn't." DM: "What? Why?" PC: "Autohypnosis." DM: ".....fine." |
| Senevri04-05-06, 05:22 AM | ...Anything can be turned into a saying. ...It is wise not to depend on items, but stupid not to use them. ...I talk too much Sorcerers... Mm... Fiend-blooded Mm... Celestial blood (exalted arcanist) |
| Need_A_Life04-05-06, 09:51 AM | The river tells no lies, though standing on the waters edge, the dishonest man still hears them. There art more between the heavens and the earth, [horatio]... How about this... you haven't the faintest idea why you manifested magical powers*? It works in every campaign too. "So.... any dragon blood?" "What!?? Who would ever want to **** a dragon?" "But... you're a sorcerer..." "I don't want to hear any more of this. Pervert." * when I use two psionic terms in a thread about sorcerers because I can't think of any others, things are starting to get silly. |
| ChantyMalo04-05-06, 01:18 PM | You can take the tiger out of the forest, but not the forest out of the tiger. How about this? Your sorcerer is a spell that gain counciousness of the self and assumed human form. Need to be a powerfull spell. they will only laugh about you if you tell them you are truly a Grease spell. |
| InsanePsychoRabbit04-06-06, 12:39 PM | Never test depth of water with both feet. |
| Shaggy_Shaggs04-06-06, 03:52 PM | I like Shaggys idea to, just don't expect the DM to grant you a will save when this happens: DM: "Ok then. The dragon charges, forgive me, POUNCES on your soft magey flesh, using all his attacks..." PC: "Uh....I disbelieve?" DM: "Not this time buddy." Of course, if your spells aren't actually spells but rather disbelief of what's going on around you, you can disbelieve the pounce - it's called readying an action to cast Wall of Force directly in front of yourself if the dragon starts to charge at you. |
| Borne Of Hate04-12-06, 03:23 PM | The heart is a field of snow covered in broken ice under the midday sun. I made that one up and I cant even figure it out. HERE is the point though: they dont ALL have to make sense. Its GREAT flavor when all of the other pcs look at eachother in confusion. |
| The_Shaman04-21-06, 10:40 PM | For a more stealth-oriented monk: The greatest men have the largest shadows. Remember this. A shadow may look like darkness in the light, but in the darkness, a shadow is a trace that light is still there. The fire may be extinguished, the water may be dried up, and the tree can be sundered, and the metal can be broken. Yet the supple wind, which no one sees, and which no one considers an enemy, no one can destroy. The moon has seen many secters from its perch, but it will never tell. Where a sword fails, a dagger succeeds. The strongest tigers are not the ones who roar in the forest, but who slink in the grass. For combat-oriented monks: Let your spirit burn like the fire, let your mind be still like the water, let your body move like the air, and let your fist strike like the mountains. Be like unto the serpent - make one strike, but make it count. Your body is the weapon. What you hold in your hand is only an ally. |
| nihility04-23-06, 02:37 AM | Here's another possible take on the sorcerer's power source. In DnD, magic is essentially rational in that the same input (various components, availble spellcasting slot or prepared spell, etc...) will produce the same output (the spell) every time, provided the inputs are correct. Wizards learn this through study. Perhaps, then, a sorcerer could be a savant of some sort who just figures out it out. This could be like a mathematical or musical savant, with talent sometimes displayed at a very young age and without formal training, or perhaps more like an exceptional engineer who can figure out the right way to do something through intuition. |
| Pfisiar04-23-06, 08:58 AM | Monk Saying: Let your heart be turned to stone and no one can accuse you of being unfair. I rarely if ever give a reason for my character's sorcerous powers. Sorcery is unpredictable and no one really can tell what the reasons are for it manifesting in some people. Sometimes a source can be good for giving a character's background, but often times I find it interferes with just letting the character evolve naturally. Most sorcerers, although they like to claim draconic heritage, really don't have a clue why they can work magic. It just matters that they can. |
| jendikai04-23-06, 01:41 PM | You should look in the Tao of Jeet Kune Do, there are a few pages of quotes by Bruce Lee which are exceptional. I'll try and recall a little... Think of it as mastering the will. If your opponent grazes your flesh, you smash his flesh. If he smashes your flesh break his bones. If he breaks your bones take his life. --Bruce Lee Also Zen koans would be good for Monk sayings. ----- According to the Test I'm a Neutral Neutral Dwarven Sorcerer???? How do you figure? |
| The_Shaman04-23-06, 04:30 PM | Frankly, there could probably be tens of reasons why a sorcerer can wield magic. Bloodline is just one of the possiblities, but there is also the possibility that the over-exposure to magic simply works on the pseudogenetic level and makes certain people exteremely attuned to magic. Who can say if a major magic battle won't have a "fallout" that kills most unborn children in the town, but gives the rest sorcerous powers? Or that a powerful spell won't change someone's body so that their children are sorcerers (ripping off the Shannara series here)? Or simply that a deity of magic has blessed, for whatever unknown reasons, a child with those powers? As long as one is a sorcerer, they simply make magic happen, and send the formulas, spellbooks and all the paraphernalia to the metaphoricall infinite layers of the abyss of oblivion. A sorcerer is magic in human shape, and everything that could potentially bind the magic to a human body can produce a sorcerer. I consider him almost a form of controlled breakdown in the fabric of reality, and proud to be one :) . Especially if the sorcerer has a themed selection of spells (i.e. specializes in fire, or enchantments, or illusions). |
| Ash the blackcowl04-24-06, 09:03 AM | One possible sorce of sorcerous powers could be from a magical ceremony. Katherine Kurtz uses this theme in her Deryni books. Granted, these powers are psyonic but the concept is whats valid. Go online or to the library and search through books of quotes, then modify them slightly to best suit your PC monk. |
