What races do you associate with Schools of Magic? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I have a wizard character who's background I am stuck on. If you were a Master Wizard teaching magic to an apprentice, what race would you take them to for each; and why? Try to keep it atleast vaguely humanoid, and atleast neutral to good alignment.

Some are easy..

Illusion: Gnome

Enchantment: Elves

Abjuration: (Ilumians (sp)) maybe not sure

Conjuration: ????

Necromancy: Kobold (just cause it's funny/little evil)

Divination: ????

Evocation: I am saying Humans for the impatient art

Transmutation: Maybe throw a dragon in there?

any help would be greatly appreciated the only two I am certain of is the Elves and Gnomes. Thanks in advance.

I agree with Humans pursuing evocation. Humans seem naturally suited to the evocation subschool because of the "flash & excitement" of this school of magic.

I'd say that Dwarves would be either Conjuration or Divination

I would give Enchantment up to some kind of Fey (preference to Nymphs) or Halflings, while giving Divination to the Elves. In D&D I see them more as "Tolkienesque High Elves" (without that +20 level adjustament that race should have). More looking at the other races, doing almost nothing, than anything.
I concur Dwarves should be the Conjurers (or Abjurers). Conjurers for their tie with the elemental Earth, stronger than any other race's elemental tie IMHO, and them being great crafters (Creation subschool), Abjurers for their resilience, that leads well to abjuration (+2 con, +2 to spell saves... looks like small doses of abjuration magic, to me).
Transmutation could be given to some exotic race, like Elan (they have a ritual to become Elan from Human), or Dragonborns (they are reborn as semi-draconic). Elan could go as Abjurers, too... their innate psi-abilities are very abjuration-like (instant action dr or bonus to save)

Illusion: Gnomes/Changling/Humans

Enchantment: Elves/Humans

Abjuration: Dwarves/Humans/Warforged

Conjuration: Tieflings/Humans

Necromancy: Tieflings/Necropolitans/Humans

Divination: Humans/Elves

Evocation: Humans/Half-Orcs/Warforged

Transmutation: Dwarves/Humans/Changlings/Shifters

At the risk of bringing back nightmares of 3.0 psionics, what about tying schools to ability scores (thematically, not by rules), then thinking of races from there?

Strength: Evocation, Necromancy

Dexterity: Transmutation

Constitution: Abjuration

Intelligence: Conjuration

Wisdom: Divination

Charisma: Enchantment, Illusion

That way, you can imagine dwarf abjurers, elf transmuters, half-orc evokers, etc. Most races don't have mental stat bonuses, though.

Your wish is granted.

If anything, Necromancy would be tied with Constitution, not Strength. As a matter of fact, I can't see Strength tied with any school.

Oh, and Dwarves would definitely be transmutation. There's something to be said for a dwarven alchemist.
