| strange_person09-10-07, 05:05 PM | You will need: 1 level in the Binder class (Tome of Magic) 18 doses of Longbreath (Arms and Equipment guide) This totals 900 gp, the recommended starting wealth for a 2nd level character. If you craft it yourself, there might even be cash left over for other gear. According to D20 Future, the effects of vacuum are Aeroembolism (which can, at worst, stun you), radiation poisoning (which is a disease and thus poses no short-term threat), lack of air to breathe, and 1 point of constitution damage per round of breath-holding due to lung ruptures (no save). Bind Naberius. Start holding your breath. Chug all that Longbreath as fast as you can. Step into the airless region. Aeroembolism is nonlethal, so for survival purposes it can be ignored. Naberius heals the Con damage as fast as the vacuum can inflict it. After you've begun holding your breath, using Longbreath increases the number of rounds you can continue holding your breath by a factor of 1.5. By my calculations, a human with a Con of 8 taking one dose per round for 18 rounds would have just over 37 hours of air remaining. The only thing capping it at 24 hours is the lack of a ruling on whether or not it's possible to bind a vestige while holding your breath. If it is, and if more funding is available, it might be possible for a normal character with essentially no protective gear to survive indefinitely with no air at all. |
| CrimsonDeath09-10-07, 07:08 PM | The only thing capping it at 24 hours is the lack of a ruling on whether or not it's possible to bind a vestige while holding your breath. Binding a vestige requires that you speak aloud to it. Find a way to do that while holding your breath, and you're good to go. (Maybe Perform (oratory) with that feat from Stormwrack that lets you use Bardic music underwater? Which makes the build Bard 1/Binder 1.) |
| WombleHunter09-10-07, 08:53 PM | Artificer 2 crafts a Necklace of Adaptation? |
| strange_person09-10-07, 08:57 PM | That's no fun. Besides, the point is doing it without protective gear. |
| WombleHunter09-11-07, 07:56 AM | Protective gear like Longbreath draughts? o_0 |
| strange_person09-11-07, 09:12 AM | The real problem with vacuum is the decompression; that point of Con damage every round, plus the incapacitating effects of Aeroembolism. Longbreath draughts fix neither of those, nor do they protect against radiation exposure. |

| strange_person09-11-07, 01:31 PM | And a vestige isn't protective equipment by any stretch of the imagination. QED. |
| Ragitsu09-11-07, 10:11 PM | I wonder at what level a non magical/psionic bestowed human without gear can survive for 24 hours in hard vacuum |
| strange_person09-11-07, 10:46 PM | Artificer 2 crafts a Necklace of Adaptation? Also, on further inspection, a Necklace of Adaptation requires a 5th level Artificer to make (since it's CL 7), and costs ten times as much, and it's debatable how well it protects against decompression issues. |
| CrimsonDeath09-12-07, 04:13 AM | it's debatable how well it protects against decompression issues. The magic of the necklace wraps the wearer in a shell of fresh air, making him immune to all harmful vapors and gases (such as cloudkill and stinking cloud effects, as well as inhaled poisons) and allowing him to breathe, even underwater or in a vacuum. Seems pretty clear to me. He can breathe in space. Now, radiation on the other hand... |
| Ragitsu09-12-07, 04:21 AM | Since Radiation Poisoning can be seen as a form of poison, I assume Poison Immunity would work. |
| strange_person09-12-07, 04:56 AM | It may be called "poisoning," but mechanically it's more like a non-contagious disease. |
| The_Mad_Linguist09-12-07, 06:17 PM | I wonder at what level a non magical/psionic bestowed human without gear can survive for 24 hours in hard vacuum Use all your breath for an Iron Heart Surge "With a roar of effort you are able to breath the vacuum of space" |
| CrimsonDeath09-13-07, 04:37 AM | What's your definition of "human"? The Human from the PHB? Or any creature with the Humanoid type and the (human) subtype? |
| strange_person09-13-07, 10:35 AM | For these purposes, any humanoid that doesn't have racial abilities relating to breathing in space. |
| CrimsonDeath09-13-07, 12:18 PM | Would the "Hold Breath" extraordinary ability count? Lizadfolk (MM1) and Sea Kin (Races of Destiny) both have it. |
| strange_person09-13-07, 02:50 PM | Hold Breath doesn't do anything that couldn't be achieved with a higher Con score or more Longbreath. It's fine. |
| Surreal09-15-07, 12:27 PM | Seems pretty clear to me. He can breathe in space. He must be Batman (http://www.shortpacked.com/d/20050131.html)... |
| CrimsonDeath09-15-07, 04:28 PM | He must be Batman (http://www.shortpacked.com/d/20050131.html)... Of course! Batman has a necklace of adaptation! Where does he get those wonderful toys?... |

Actually, keep in mind that it's an 11 round process to rebind Naberius, during which you havent access to his abilities. Therefore, the build necesitates at least a 12 con, and preferably some sort of daily renewable item or 2 of restoration-type effects, which I'm sure can be found in the MiC. |

Rod of Bodily Restoration. It can heal up to 12 damage to your physical ability scores each day, divided as you choose. Remember that binding a vestige requires a flat surface on which to draw its seal, and the ability to speak aloud. |
| strange_person10-01-07, 12:09 PM | Well, you can draw the seal while the previous binding is still in effect, and for the one round where you're speaking, you're not holding your breath so you don't take constitution damage. For drawing the seal, you just need some chalk and four square yards of canvas. That's less than one GP. What's really needed is something that lets you remain conscious and speak while asphyxiating, for 1 round per day. |
| DEM0man10-02-07, 06:11 AM | Why debate on something a 1 lvl warforged commoner can excel at? I dont know which edition of d20futrure you have but in mine , things are much much worse: Aerometabolism : DC20 Constituition check every round after the 3d or STUN until you are moved to normal pressure (1atm) and if you fail , you fall unconscious Suffocation damage : if you hold your breath you make a DC15+1/round Constitution UNCAPED check every round or you loose 1 CON (succesfull) start suffocating(o ,-1 ,death) Ion Bombardment: you suffer SEVERE SUNBURN(couldnt find the actuall description to this but im guessing an endure elements or some FR will help) and radiation poisoning [disease with save depending on the duration of exposure( 1 round 1 min 10 min 1 h 1d with dc 12 15 18 21 24 and incubations from 1 day to 1d6 h)] dealing massive constitution damage. SO in conclusion , i think NO lvl 2 char without further tinkering can even remotely imagine the possibility of surviving in vaccum , the only candidate and he would still recquire some tinkering is the warforged. Another idea might be the necropolitan template. Both of my suggestions dont fall withing the standars but do try to add more variables since the effects of the vaccum are different now :D |
| strange_person10-02-07, 09:34 AM | Aeroembolism can only stun or knock unconscious; it cannot kill. Sunburn, according to Sandstorm, is also inconvenient but not in itself fatal. Radiation exposure, since it's treated as a disease, will not kill someone in less than 24 hours. There isn't actually a save or check to prevent the Con damage; it occurs automatically every round you persist in holding your breath. The good news is, Naberius heals it as fast as it accumulates. If you really must know, I'm trying to prove that undead, constructs, and the Necklace of Adaptation aren't the be-all and end-all of exoatmospheric survival. |
| CrimsonDeath10-02-07, 12:07 PM | If you really must know, I'm trying to prove that undead, constructs, and the Necklace of Adaptation aren't the be-all and end-all of exoatmospheric survival. Just the most convenient means. |
| DEM0man10-05-07, 08:13 AM | firstly just for the heck of it 24h=24x60min=24x60x60sec=24x60x60/6rounds=14400 rounds 1)Aeroembolism (stupid smartass...Like noone would understand what i meant you had to correct it, do you feel satisfied with yourself now?) can stun you PERMANENTLY unless you can leave the vaccum so BYE BYE NABERIUS you cant use it , your dead so ASSUMING you have a 50!!!(which is ridiculous by itself) constitution and can fail only on a nat 1 there is still quite a large(like 99%)chance you will faill and then you are dead. Not to mention the chance if you have less than 50 con... So unless you are very very very very very very (x 14397times) lucky you are dead and 2)Dude read the posts carefully... the dc raises by 1 every round you hold your breath and if you fai you are unconscious and suffocate(3 rounds= death) WHich means that some time halfway during the day the DC is 7215!!!How the heck is that gonna keep your char from falling unconscious????????????????????????????? ??????????????????? FOR BOTH 1 and 2 not to mention that your CON 8 example human cant even survive for more than 3 rounds COn checks dont have automatic succes so there is no way you can succed on a dc20 con check bye bye dead 3)Radiation was mentioned to discourage you to use this build for a more than 24 h stay at a vaccum (altho it would be hillarious) You may be trying too much tho and bend the rules a bit |
| strange_person10-05-07, 11:24 AM | I pointed out one of your numerous spelling and/or grammatical mistakes, you called me a "stupid smartass." Which one of us is violating the CoC? The DC 7215 Constitution check will never come up, because there's a buffer (two rounds per point of Constitution score for most people) where it's not necessary to make such checks at all. Longbreath draughts extend that buffer; 18 of them in rapid succession extend it beyond 24 hours. I agree that projecting this strategy beyond one binding of Naberius is enormously more difficult. Does anyone have ideas for getting around the stun problem? A Heal check might be sufficient, but that requires a second character who's not stunned. |
| DEM0man10-05-07, 04:45 PM | Dude you are supposed to have the book , read the description "the real danger of vaccum comes from suffocation THOUGH HOLDING ONE'S BREATH DAMAGES THE LUNGS.A CHARACTER WHO ATEMPTS TO HOLD HIS BREATH MUST MAKE A CONSTITUTION CHECK(DC 15) EVERY ROUND;THE DC INCREASES BY 1 EVERY ROUND." Got it yet? The CON check is not about holding your breath , its about supporting the difference of pressure between your lungs soon to implode in a bloody mess , your mind still wondering why you atempted this. Its not about holding your breath. Its about the damage you cause to yourself holding your breath. The "Buffer" as you call it is , if im not mistaken, 1xyour Con score but thats the last thing you are worried about out there... It was pointless of you to correct me.Every1 understood what i was reffering to.If we did this at every post then the pages would double.Besides see if i care for making grammatical mistakes , i only want people to understand the gist of my posts , im not gonna apply to an English University. And finally you are the first one to correct one of my MANNY grammatical and/or spelling errors (probably cause i proved your idea was not as well thought as one would expect from some1 who can read english as well as you , except if the book was written in taiwaneese) |
| strange_person10-05-07, 08:22 PM | "the real danger of vaccum comes from suffocation And Longbreath draughts prevent suffocation. They're in the Arms and Equipment guide. "If you use Longbreath after you've already started holding your breath, multiply the number of rounds remaining before you need to make Constitution checks by 1.5." One point five to the eighteenth power (Longbreath costs 50 per dose, and 900 gp is appropriate starting wealth for a 2nd level character) is enough to turn a few rounds into more than 24 hours. The lung damage is represented by Constitution damage, one point per round. Naberius heals one point of ability score damage per round. |
| Khadmus10-06-07, 07:49 AM | bla bla bla) Though I appreciate the point you bring to the argument (this whole thing is over my head, so I can't comment), I find your mannerism to be more than a little rude. If I'm getting this right, the suffocation isn't really the problem. DEM0man is saying that the pressure difference is what's making your lungs break. |

HOLDING ONE'S BREATH DAMAGES THE LUNGS not suffocating damages the lungs , HOLDING ONE'S BREATH DAMAGES THE LUNGS |
| strange_person10-06-07, 10:42 AM | The lung damage is represented by a point of Constitution damage per round, which Naberius then heals. Did you miss that the last three times I wrote it, including in the OP? |
| DEM0man10-06-07, 12:51 PM | Dude seriously are you playing ping pong in your head? Im not telling you you are gonna die from CON damage , im telling you the dc raises by 1 every round you hold your breath and if you fail you are unconscious and suffocate(3 rounds= death) WHich means that some time halfway during the day the DC is 7215!!!. IF YOU ARE UNCONSCIOUS YOU AUTOMATICALLY SUFFOCATE , YOU CANT HOLD YOUR BREATH! plus assuming you can hold your breath even when unconscious (which apart from being silly is forbiden by the rules , can Naberius heal the damage every round? Because i think it might need rebinding at some point after you are sleeping in space |

| DEM0man10-06-07, 02:12 PM | Rules for holding your breath: You can hold your breath for a number of rounds equal to your constitution score. After that you have to make a CON check dc15 every round or start suffocating. The dc increases by 1 every round. This happens (probably) because the pressure difference inside the lungs of the guinee pig is different than the 0 pressure outside the lungs so basically...your lungs EXPLODE!" A CHARACTER WHO ATEMPTS TO HOLD HIS BREATH MUST MAKE A CONSTITUTION CHECK(DC 15) EVERY ROUND;THE DC INCREASES BY 1 EVERY ROUND "Normally you must NOT make ANY con checks BEFORE you run out of rounds but the rules here specifically say that A character who atempts to hold his breath must make a CON check dc15 every round so its NOT about suffocating or not having enough breath , its JUST BECAUSE. Thats the effect of aeroembolism every round you must save with an increasing dc so as not to fall unconscious (and if you fall unconscious you cant hold your breath or cure ability damage that might ocur)NOT because you have no more air , because you are in space... |
