I'm thinking about creating a Ravnica based campaign setting with full list of classes and spells allowed... its currently a project in my group.

Am I gonna be infringing on Wizards rights, if I put up a freewebbased mod on ravnica/dnd hybrid? Its DND, using ravnica as a campaign setting..

the question is.. im putting up a website for it. I don't read law that much, and the OGL is hard to comprehend.

It's strictly non-profit.

Is it ok to go ahead and put up a website for it?

PaulI don't know what a Ravnica is. . . and I'm not entirely sure what the scope of your project is. If it's just lists of what is and isn't available, you should be okay, without needing the OGL to be involved.

I think the OGL is a great thing for gaming, but it seems to have made people skittish about putting stuff online. Not everything involving D&D that people want to put on their websites requires, or should even involve the OGL.

I can only speak with regards to the OGL. My recommendation is to get a lawyer. OGL is serious business, whether you're distributing it for free or not.

The only material you should use under the OGL is from the System Reference Documents. Anything else (that is not yours) is off-limit (though you can use material from Unearthed Arcana since it contains Open Game Contents).

From what you've said, I kinda suspect that Ravinica is a setting for a computer game, some other RPG, or a bunch of books.
As such, you risk not just upsetting folks by improperly using the OGL, but the folks who own Ravinica may have issues with you, too.
And remember that under the OGL, you cannot make something Open Content if you don't own it.

Really, I need to know much more about this "product" before I can render any meaningful opinion as to whether it infringes (and who). Could it be done without infringing? Yes. Could it be done in a way that did infringe? Also yes.
What you've said about what you are planning is vague enough that I can't tell which is more likely to be what you're doing.

If this is a home-grown house-brew mod of a computer game using the SRD and you want to have stuff for your campaign on-line then yeah, sure.

if you want to create a D20 game based on this Ravina thing and bring it to market in order to sell it then you need to get a lawyer, having him review the OGL and whatever the rights the owner of Ravina gives or doesn't give.

bottom line -- if it's to sell get a lawyer
