This is hopefully the place for all anime/manga D20 lovers out there. People need to realize that BESM D20 is a D20 system designed specifically for these types of campaigns but yet a lot of people seem ignorant to this fact and so they'd rather kill themselves trying to get anime/manga to fit into the core DnD.

This ain't gonna happen unless you seriously dumb down the wicked awesome stuff that you see in this genre and that isn't keeping to the true spirit of the genre.

Oh come on guys, with all of these anime/manga ideas and no one ever thought about using the BESM D20? :banghead:

BESM D20 can work perfectly if overlapped with any D20 game. So come on guys let's hear some of those great ideas.

I don't know, I was able to get some good stuff done using core rules. I mean come on, I was able to make Goku from the beginning of DBZ at level 11, using Wizards of the Coast books alone.

I think the probme is that a lot of people are stuck on the idea of '1st level Kenshin' while promptly making the Kenshin in the series first level. He's not. He's teetering on Epic Level. Keeping that in mind, you're going to get a lot of his 'wicked awesomeness' pretty quickly and easily - even keeping to the SRD.
WanderingGod

04-14-07, 04:52 PM
That's precisely my point. In anime/manga the characters aren't restricted to what they can do, even toward the beginning, but their abilities just tend to grow more powerful as they continue on (maybe picking up a few new tricks along the way).

This is why anime/manga concepts should use the BESM D20. It allows you to make a character that can accomplish the same level of power as you see in this genre, no matter what character level they are.
TFVanguard

04-14-07, 09:46 PM
Again, you miss the point. Show me anime where people who are explicitly 'mega power' when they're starting out? (Unless they're a walking plot-point). Kenshin's past had him totally suck with a sword... Goku had to train to become a modest martial artist - even WITH his Saiyan blood... Amoro could barely handle the Gundam at first... Parn was hopeless against orcs... etc.

In regular D20, I can model everyone.. keeping in mind that they PROGRESS in power. They don't just 'magically get a metric shitload of abilities of uber-powerness'. Even Goku has a relatively limited set of powers even as he reaches divine levels.

BESM D20 is not the perfect anime system.

No system really is perfect for anime. Some systems are better for different
shows than others are.

While I like BESM D20 in some respects, I find that as a system it falls short
when I want to run an anime game.

I find that the best system for me is to create all of the powers for the game
myself. I end up customizing the D20 engine to suit my needs.

I may take some ideas from BESM d20 but I won't use the majority of what
it offers.

You can use any system to create anime characters if you want. It just takes a little effort and the ability to rename spells and powers. If you do that and then adjust the damage scale for your game you can create just about any anime you want.

Goku becomes easy to recreate if you change the hit points of normal individuals and objects. A 10d6 fireball is extremely powerful if the average person has 1 hit points and a wall has 10 hit points.

BESMd20 gets mentioned a lot on these boards, for obvious reasons.

I think it is a very useful toolkit. But I also don't see anything wrong with trying to build characters from various anime using just the standard D&D rules. If nothing else, it can be a learning excercise about the D&D rules; what is and is not possable within them.

Heck, I know of at least 3 game systems (none of which were intended for superhero play), where just after their release people on their message boards started threads seeing which superheroes could be built under those rules.
Over on the Eberron section of these boards, folks took a run at building Iron Man as an Artificer.
Sometimes, more can be learned from trying to build a character where he doesn't easilly fit than where he does.
WanderingGod

04-15-07, 03:48 PM
For one thing, show me anything in the core system that will let Goku blow up mountains? or worlds even, like Freiza?

Second, there are tons of examples of characters who have "explicitly mega power" when they start out. To name but a few, take "Trinity Blood"- Abel already had awesome powers even at the beginning, what about Dark from "Bastard", or the Guyver, Kazuma from "Scryed" and again with Goku, the only time he wasn't awesomely powerful was when he was a small kid....not many people usually start their campaigning as kids.

Third, all of you are missing the point of this thread.
This isn't for debates on whether you like the system or not, this is a place for people who like and use BESM D20 to post their ideas.

And last, in anime/manga everything is possible, so there should never be any worries about what is and isn't.

RPG's should be about fun, first and foremost, not about trying to dissect the system by trying to convert anime/manga characters into it and then b-i-t-c-h-i-n-g about breaking it or crying about game balance. :nonono:

Oh, I didn't know you OWNED this board, and that, as it's owner, you were setting it up to advertise a defunct product from another company despite THIS board having the words 'WIZARDS OF THE COAST' emblazoned on the top...

Silly me, here I thought it was an OPEN discussion board about adopting d20 techniques to model anime characters, and how BESM can be used for it, or not, as the case warrants. Silly me.

Thank you for proving the stereotype about the 'anime fan' as far as gamers go. GOOD JOB!

Oh, and I do have BESM d20, and there's no way in hell you're going to get 'Goku who can destroy planets' at 1st level regardless of how you munckin it.
WanderingGod

04-15-07, 07:13 PM
Well, I did start this thread and there are tons of threads that are "about adopting d20 techniques to model anime characters". This isn't one of them. This was for people who actually used the system....hence the title.

It's okay though, I mean there's no need to cry about. :weep:

By the way, using the core rules, "there's no way in hell you're going to get Goku blowing up planets" at all. I don't care what level you have him, 1st or Epic.

Hypothetically the earth has a hardness of 8 to 10 and about 11404800000 HP straight through.

A character that takes all advances in strength and is level 91238400000 could break through the earth with a punch......... and the character would still be within the rules of epic progression.

This doesn't take into account wizards who can craft epic spells to do tons of damage or epic psionics.....

The damage seed or energy seed can be used to create effects with massive
levels of damage.

And since epic has no level cap you can use it to create just about anything if your really want. I admit that it is a bit cheesy. But it is within the rules of normal D&D....

Anyways.... I haven't seen many people using BESM d20 as a standalone system. Most groups who use it in my area use it as a box of ideas to modify their own games. Mostly it's because the system is broken if you only use it.

Not only that but if you are running an anime game for a specific series you really have to modify the BESM ruleset for it to work.

If you want to hear about some awesome BESM games why don't you post some first.
WanderingGod

04-16-07, 02:57 PM
You know if you people don't like the system, that's cool....but then why are you posting here?

I do agree with you though, Rzach. I don't use it as a stand alone either, I usually merge it with D20 modern.

However you also prooved my point, Rzach. I never said it wasn't possible but how ridiculous would that be to have a character of that level?

By the way, I've done an awesome Mortal Kombat campaign, Dragon Ball Z, and even a wicked space fantasy. What about you guys? Or are you just here to critique and moan?

I guess I could try and find some of my npc stuff.

We used the BESM d20 for three games over about a year and a half. In the end we elected to move away from it and return to the core d20 system.

It does an OK job of modeling most of the Anime stuff, but it is clear the game was a step child to their original Tri-Stat System.

I will say that I thought it had a lot of things I liked once the characters were high levels, but then that could be said of most d20 systems.

In the end, is it a bad set of rules? No, I think they were fine. Where they a great set of rules? No.

BESM d20 might not be supported much anymore, but that doesn't mean that it isn't a fun system. Although I personally haven't played it, I do own the book. The Attribute/Disability system is an interesting expansion, and the classes presented do fit into the rather overpowered characters that frequent most anime (and manga). Balancing might be a little off, and some of the skills and equipment might need some tweaking, but if you're just playing for fun, or have a GM whose good a keeping track of what's being used and what's not (and is good at mixing in other rules), then I don't see a problem.

Personally, I whould find it interesting to play as a male Gun Bunny with maxed Girl Magnet and Easily Distracted (Girls) disabilities. :D Lots of fun role-playing moments, I'd bet.

Hi Im new here, though by no means am I a noob a the d20 system. You know you could always try using the naruto d20 system, it uses the modern d20 as a basis. You can download the PDF at http://www.narutod20.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=91

The system is a great start to incorporating anime into the dnd system, and someone on the boards is also creating a bleach d20 version as well. If not you could just as easily incorporate the chakra system into a DnD campaign, your choice.

And yes I know this forum is for BESM D20, but hey whatever works for ya right? :D

Oh, I think they actually fought much harder than this. But there often comes a time in a "fight" where you realize that all that's left for you is to decide how you will fail.
As metaphor, I offer: about 2 years ago, I took my old scooter out of the closet and used it to run out to a store. On the way back, I screwed up and let the front wheel get stuck in a rut, and it caused me to stumble and start to fall. For a endless fraction of a second I was alternating between falling and recovering control, but it was a battle back and forth. Eventually there came a point where I figured I still might win, but I would probably lose, and if I decided to keep fighting I would no longer have any control over where or how I fell. So, I chose to quit fighting and instead to fall on the soft grass (instead of the hard pavement) and onto my back instead of my elbow or hands or something else not so good at absorbing impact without injury.

Anyway, I'll mention again www.goofanforums.com as a good place to go discuss anything GoO did. Not quite as good as the old official GoO boards, but its getting there. Anything I ever did for BESMd20 got posted to the GoO boards, and I did not always save a copy as I (foolishly) kinda expected the boards to either A) always be there, or B) warn me before going away.

I've bought Besm d20, and think it's full of good ideas, and quite respecting the "anime feel".

But you must admit the system is badly balanced. It is badly made: there's no core rule that govern the special attack: sometimes you make a save with Dc= 10 +2 per special attack rank, sometimes DC=15+1/rank, sometimes it's a skill check that is used, etc...

you have to adapt and in some way "correct" it. But the attribute system is excellent: it allows you to customize your character in endless ways, with defects, etc...

So why not use d20 modern as a base (or better, Spycraft 2.0), suppress the skill system (why should your character be limited to a defined set of skills? Does Naruto make a jump check each time he gets from a tree to another?), and add the attribute/defects system from Besm d20?

Besm d20's skills are of no use, feats are poor, so add a defense bonus, Int modifier gives bonus starting feats, build your own classes using the deconstruction system given in besm, and use feats from another more "seriously made" game. Spycraft 2.0 is truly excellent: feats are far more interesting than standard dnd or d20 modern feats. For example: great fortitude: +3 to Fort Save and +3 wound points. Lightning reflexes: +3 to Ref saves and roll initiative twice and keep the best roll.
Finally, these feat are really interesting!!
WanderingGod

04-27-07, 04:20 PM
Yes, I agree 100%. Not even I use the BESM D20 as a stand alone system, I usually combine it with D20 Modern. This way, like you mentioned, you can have structure but still keep the coolness of the attributes. I've found that this makes for one Hell of a wicked cool game.

Ehmm... anime? Yeah, I'm the first who wants to play an anime-based rpg d20. But, well.... could Dragon Ball Z be a decent way of doing this?
Well, I really think NO. It's possible to create a world with races, worlds, and planets similar, but it's rather impossible create Dbz characters!
In DBZ, Janemba (the most powerful enemy) can destroy the galaxy.
And so on...
While don't we try instead to make a cool Street Fighter game based rpg?

i myself bought BESM ages ago. it was interesting. hoewever, the only time i've used it was when i ran a The Slayers campaign, which was one of the last full campaign settings ive seen GoO release. as a dm i found it increasingly hard to make challenges that weren't solved by explosions, and if i needed a strong enemy i had to make a mazoku by hand. a nightmare. the bastards even had the nerve to try and capture a terresque, i brought in for scenery, with the equivalent of a pokeball.... and laugh when the terresque rolled a 1 to save. no level 7 character should EVER be able to do that. but on paper it worked under besm. hence forth, ive only ever used besm to fill in tiny gaps in such things as the Kingdom Hearts d20 system.

BESM is not the perfect system, but it's a pretty damn good one.

Trouble for me lies in that a) I haven't been able to get most of the little nuances of the adaptation (I'm just dumb that way), and b) every time I try and say 'D20 Anime', someone of my group wants DBZ.

I grew up watching action flicks and the like, and once I started to watch REAL Anime... well, let's just say that I like the original DBZ and understand Toriyama when he says that his vision of DBZ was tarnished at some point along the way.

I must be the only guy in Costa Rica who thinks DBZ, D20 and blowing away Saiyans with a 12-gauge should be in the same setting.

And Hell, I'm proud of that.

I actually switched over... and it's bloody mess besm d20... I even own the the newest edition 3rd... and I still think it's a mess... That's the only thing I don't like about BESM d20 is that it's not balanced in itself, and for people who like to play d20 games... it's so easy to break. Sure it gets the feel of the one shot samurai, but it makes for sort of boring fights and making enemies strong enough to survive that one shot was bordering on a cheese platter... I do love the attributes and the disadvantages but it really did need a backbone.

And what do you think about the point based system?
D20 is basically a level-based system, not point-based. Adding points destroys the balance of a class based system I think.
spyone

05-24-07, 10:23 AM
Well, I like the ability to check the balance of my classes with something other than just my best guess.
"Every level of every class should give 10 points of abilities on average", and a point-cost assigned to all existing class abilities, is a great reference point. "Does this class seem overpowered?" "Well, let's see .... actually, even accounting for the spellcasting abilities, this only comes to like 180 points at 20th level. I think it needs to be beefed-up, not nerfed." (That was the Healer from first edition Warcraft, BTW.)

I don't plan on using the point-cost for players, but as DM I like to use it to balance new classes and races I create.

I like to use the BESM in my adventures because i feel less restricted in what i let my own players do, like when one of my players had rank 4 jump and easily jumps 25ft straight up in the air, its just cool to be able to do things like like it all brings more of the veriety in my games.
Anyway i saw a post sometime ago thats gone now about someone wanting to make an anime Based on Shaman King. So this afternoon i made up a class for what i would like to call the "Battle Shaman" since in shaman king there are so may different types in the actuall series. ________________________________________ _______________________

Spirit Sight : A Battle Shaman of 1st Level and above can see Ethereal Creatures (Including Spirits) as easy as he/she can see material ones and Battle shaman can easily distinguish between the too.

Spirit Intergration : The Battle Shaman calls Forth the Spirit into a spirit ball (Hitodama Mode i beleve) and shoves the ball into his body. The Battle shaman uses the spirits Knowledge and fighting techniques, while retaining the control of the body, unlike possesion. The shaman if he wishes can let the spirit be at the fore front so that the spirit can comunicate with others but still maintains control. (Now in more detailed game mechanics)
The spirit would have his own character sheet, of what he was like before Death. When Intergrated you use your current HP+the spirits HP as Tempoary Hit Points. As you know each other techniques all feats racial abilities and other class abilites are pooled. If you and your spirit have the same ability it overlaps and does not become more powerful. The intergrated character gets the best ability score of either you or the spirits charcter sheet, for example if the spirit had a dex of 14 and you had 12 you would use the 14 and not the 12, JUST REMEMBER When the effect ends you refer only to you own charcters sheet
This ability Takes a Full round Action to activate and Lasts 1 min per Level,
because this ability strains the shamans body he can only preform this ability 1/level, for for example at the 5th level the shaman can intergrate 5 times/day for 5 mins per activation before it runs out.

OVERSOUL (Version 1) : (((This is where the BSEM comes in handy)))
Oversoul involves summoning the spirit ally inside a Battle Shamans Focus (ussually his weapon, or other item) The spirit will then wrap around the focus object granting it new powers.
Unlike intergration, oversoul comes from the shamans inner power his MANA (or Furyoku if you seen the english version) Depending on how much Mana the shaman uses determins how strong or weak the powers are.

using the BSEM Special Attack attribute as a reference

Each use of the Oversoul costs 5 Mana, the base damage or numerical effect is 1D8, talk to your DM about possible effects you could use it for 1example i'll use will be for attacking (Defense is already covered in imporved oversoul)

By Adding 5 more points of mana increases the damage by 1d8
By adding an attribute will cost an additional 5 points
By adding a disability will reduce the mana cost by 5 points

so 1st the attack, say i want to create the english version of Amidamaru's Celestial Slash the base is 1D8 i invested another 15 mana points ; 5 to add the long range attribute an the other 10 to add 2d8 to make it a 3d8 attack
so i now have a long ranged slasing attack that deals 3d8 to the target.

Improved Oversoul : Shamans can now also use this offensive power to defend during oversoul.as an immediate action shaman can increse their AC by +2 / 5 points of mana they spend this only wrks for 1 round alternative ly can use the mana power to give a tempoary damage reduction for 1 round at the cost of 5 points / 2/-

Giant Oversoul: Byspeding 20point when activating Oversoul can inrease size of it by 1 size category, the shaman does not get a penalty for this as the focus item itself is not bigger this also added an extra +4D8 on the base damage

Improved Intergration Lasts hours instead of minutes and can use the ability at 2x their level

Double medium : can use 2 spirits simultaneously

I've just started getting into BESM and i love it! :D

I know it's a dead system but I don't care. It's like gurps only less complicated and straight to the point. My only complaint is the weapons, and how they suck and are too obscure.. But that's what GMs are for..

And about shooting saiyans with a 12-gauge.. the old farmer in DBZ tried that against Raditz. And Raditz caught the bullet with his bare-hands. If Raditz is immune to bullets, you can immagine how futile it is against other opponents.. :P

Now pre-Z Dragonball is a conceivable anime. People got hurt, projecting fireballs and flying around was not the only techniques, (Tien for example grew an extra pair of arms to gain more attack rolls and used flurry of blows..)

Infact Launch would regularly used a machine gun on the Z-Fighters when she turned into her psycho alter-ego. Though it didn't outright kill Master Roshi, Krillin, and the like. It did leave them bruised and bleeding. Implying that though Z-Fighters are well above humans, bullets still hurt, and they aren't gods..

DBZ pretty much just wentoff the deep end and litteraly the gods were coming to them for help! I believe everyone on the planet should've had to make a sanity check when they saw one of the high ranking gods praying for a mortal to win an epic battle of good and evil...

Check this:
http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=1027005

A prestige class based on Gainax, built with BESM and d20 Modern.

Also, does anyone else have the BESM suppliments, Advanced Magic and Monstrous Manual? I highly suggest Advanced Magic for DBZ style games where the ki balls fly like crazy. Instead of being limited by your level or ranks of Dynamic Sorcery, all you have to do is succeed on a drain check. Sure, it will use up all your Energy Points and leave you fatigued, but overcasting is awesome. Theoretically, you could cast 9th level spells at first level, even though they are in the DC 50 and greater range. You can lower the DC with a ton of investments (like spending your own HP, and money, and taking a very long time to complete the spell), or load up on Divine Relationship and pray for a critical success.
Now, with this system, you could create a super-destructive planet nuking spell (something like a Spirit Bomb), give it a massive DC of 200 or more, and there would still be a way to cast it! Of course, if the check fails, the consequences would be disastrous.

Personally, I think you can fit anime stuff into DnD pretty well. Perhaps you need some reflavoring to fit with the rest better, alright, but it can be done pretty easily. As long as you realize that the average anime main character isn't the average DnD character at level 10 or something. (At least the main characters in anime you actually want to adapt for use in d20, not animes like Clannad for instance.) I generally just try to stick to the general idea of the thing. Keeping in mind things such as the following:

A Kamehameha doesn't need to PZOWMGITZDESTROYMOUNTAINZ. It just needs to have the character cup their hands together (somatic components, anyone?), shout something (verbal!), and shoot a big beam of energy.

Giant robots may not fit into DnD right off the bat, but what about mindless giant constructs controlled by characters sitting safely inside them?

Not every shinobi needs uber demon powers. At least, not at level 1, level 10 maybe a fraction of it, level 20 would definately be reasonable to allow for some of the goodiness.

Likewise, not every pirate needs to stretch and bend in ways normal people don't. They just need beards made out of tentacles. :P

Last example: no matter how you bend it, it can always turn out that your DnD world is really the Matrix and you have been fighting Digital Monsters all this time. MOST HARDCORE ANIME D20 IDEA EVER.

Who says you can't start in epic levels... just start in epic levels and don't dare call it level one.
If you have trouble, visit the optimization threads. the locate city bomb can be easily built up to destroy a planet by... level 50 atleast, I'm shure there are enough feats by there to soem how brign your caster level up some reasonable fraction of a planates radius and just cast it a few times.

don't forget D20 moddern
or gesault
or doing both at the same time...
