| celticfrost97305-31-07, 06:35 PM | Could you publish a module in, say, an area of Faerun? I'm guessing no. Also, could I use monsters from other WotC books like "Lords of Madness"? Seems like statistics blocks across the board, from anyone claiming d20, can be used by others. Meaning feats, spells, monsters etc.. Thanks for any help! Celtic |
| celticfrost97305-31-07, 09:18 PM | Ok I found the SRD.org site, I guess this is actually a lot more limited than I thought. Is that list of monsters really all anyone can use? Is it current? |
| Ranger REG06-01-07, 02:39 AM | Could you publish a module in, say, an area of Faerun? I'm guessing no. Material explicitly relating to Forgotten Realms are off-limit. Also, could I use monsters from other WotC books like "Lords of Madness"? Seems like statistics blocks across the board, from anyone claiming d20, can be used by others. Meaning feats, spells, monsters etc.. If it's not in the SRD, or designated as OGC (I'm guessing the Lords of Madness does not contain any), that is also off-limit. |
| celticfrost97306-02-07, 02:04 PM | That sucks. |
| celticfrost97306-02-07, 02:05 PM | OGL is not very "open" is it. |
| Nellisir06-02-07, 11:24 PM | OGL is not very "open" is it. You mean, as opposed to the way WotC and TSR -used- to do it? The way every other non-OGL company does it? Where you can't use anything? There's a ton of 3rd-party material out there. WotC owns D&D. They don't need to use the OGL, and the fact that they basically give you the DMG, PH, and MM puts them head and shoulders above every other professional game company. They gave away more than any other game company ever did -- it's just petty to complain that they didn't give you -enough-. |
| Ranger REG06-05-07, 03:53 AM | OGL is not very "open" is it. Only if they place/designate the material under said license. They did not. The only ones from WotC that are under the OGL are the ones in the SRD, MSRD, Unearthed Arcana, d20 Modern Weapons Locker, and one of the Monster Manual (II?) because of one content. |
| danzig13806-08-07, 10:16 AM | OGL is not very "open" is it. The purpose of the OGL was to prompt other companies to make adventure modules. The purpose of the OGL is not to make you happy. The OGL is incredbly open. The SRD alone contains a whole load of material that WotC never had to make available for free to anyone. It led to the creation of a wealth of 3rd party material that also has a lot of material you can use freely. And you're going to complain because not everything is freely available to use? Because WotC wants to retain some control over some of their material? Freaking bastards!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11  |
| warwizard06-11-07, 10:30 PM | Are we able to use the different classes in the available monsters? I.E. orc shamen, ogre shamen, leader, etc? Warwizard |
| Ranger REG06-11-07, 11:48 PM | Are we able to use the different classes in the available monsters? I.E. orc shamen, ogre shamen, leader, etc? Warwizard If they're in the SRD -- thought I don't think they're in there -- you can. Otherwise, you'll need to find a shaman class that is designated OGC from a third-party source. AFAIK, no shaman class created by WotC are designated OGC. |
| i_am_some_guy06-13-07, 07:12 PM | Could you publish a module.... I'm wondering what you mean by "publish". Like the OGL is a legal agreement telling you what you can and can't do, the term "publish" is also a legal term that has a specific meaning. What is it you want to do? |

There are only three categories he can fall into with regards to the d20 ruleset - illegal use, fan use, or legal/OGL use. He specifically asked about OGL use. |

I'm an inquiring mind and I want to know ;) Speaking in general categories doesn't actually help anyone if they think what they're doing falls into one category when it really falls into another one. |
| celticfrost97306-26-07, 11:50 PM | Hah, I think I had had a couple of beers and just bought a bunch of WoTC books when I posted that "that sucks" and "OGL is not very open is it?" comments. Sorry about that, definitely not cool. Upon retrospect and more examination it does seem to be a pretty good system. There are quite a few monsters that you can use etc.. Anyways, I plan to make a nice PDF module, mostly for fun, but I want to adhere to the SRD in case down the line this becomes "serious" and I want to try selling it. Anyways, sorry for the immature posts and thanks for the info everyone. Celtic |

Celtic -10 for posting while immature; +30 for realizing it and accepting responsibility. :) As far as OGL material...check backstock bins and ebay for the Tome of Horrors (3.0 version), or pick up the updated, 3.5 edition, one-monster-per-page layout, pdf only, $10 version at RPGNow or the pdf retailer of your choice. I also recommend Tome of Horrors II & III. AEG, Fantasy Flight Games, Green Ronin, and Necromancer Games are great companies for ogc/OGL material, though only Necromancer is really still in the fantasy/d20 arena. Bastion Press was also good. Alot of people like Malhavoc Press - I thought they had some good ideas, but the OGL declarations were usually restrictive and somewhat obtuse. Also, keep your eye on Paizo - I suspect they'll be pretty good and pretty open with their OGC. Could be a serious shot in the arm to the 3rd-party market. |
| Nylanfs07-24-07, 11:46 PM | Privateer Press is also very good with a steampunk setting. Kinda like the reverse of Eberron. They have technology augmenting magic here as Eberron has magic augmenting technology. Plus I just love the Victorian & beginning of the industrial age type settings. Mongoose was another that had some of the obtuse OGC declarations, although they have gotten better. |
| SwarthmoreDB07-25-07, 08:55 PM | Actually, this leads me to another question: Is it possible to make an OGL D&D computer game, such as if I were to try to make a GPL'd version of say, Neverwinter Nights. I assume it would be possible, as long as I stuck with only using OGL material. I would like to know if it is possible or not though. |
| Ranger REG07-26-07, 02:06 AM | Actually, this leads me to another question: Is it possible to make an OGL D&D computer game, such as if I were to try to make a GPL'd version of say, Neverwinter Nights. It's possible to make an OGL computer game based on the SRD. You still need to drop the "D&D" and "Neverwinter Night" brands, unless you can secure permission to use them. |
| i_am_some_guy07-26-07, 11:29 AM | It's possible to make an OGL computer game based on the SRD. You still need to drop the "D&D" and "Neverwinter Night" brands, unless you can secure permission to use them. From my understanding OGL does not support transport to computer games. |
| Ranger REG07-27-07, 02:07 AM | From my understanding OGL does not support transport to computer games. It's the d20 System Trademark License that does not support computer games development. You want to do a computer game with the d20 System logo on it? You'll need to talk to WotC about a different kind of agreement. Can't promise you they'll say yes. |
