Does anyone have any revised rules for foot chases??? The RAW kinda suck on that part of gaming, if your faster you get away if your slower you loose. And that sucks
In the movies there are always things getting jumped over, or knocked in the way of the monsters, and monsters not cornering well and what not. or even for heros chasing the bag guys.
Any ideas to add a cinematic feel to chases??

The best I can do is this (i sometimes use this but try to avoid it)

House Rule: Chasing by foot
1. Have each person partaking in the race roll 1d20 + Dex Mod

2. For every 5 ft. a person moves faster than 30, add +1. For every 5 ft. a person moves slower than 30 ft, subtrack 1. For example, a person with a 10 dex and a 20 ft. movement would get a -2, while a person with a 16 dex and a 35 ft movement would get a +4.

3. Calculate how far away the two parties are from each other.
For every 5 ft, you get a +1. For example, if two people who are chasing each other are 40 ft. apart at the start, then the target number (or TR) is 8.

4. Now, as they race whoever wins get either a +1 or a -1 to the TR. If the person who is being chased wins, then the TR gets a +1. If the person whos chasing wins, then the TR gets a -1. When they both tie nothing happens, a whole round passes with no change.

5. When the target number reaches 0, the distance between two parties is less then 5 ft, usually a grapple attemp can be made at this point. If someone want to make an attack, but has reach, for every 5 ft. reach they have they can subtrack that from the TR to see how close they must be to attack/grapple.

I decided to make chasing alot like combat, and found it to be more..."suspenseful". What do you think?

ok...for example

lets say one person "A" is chasing person "B".
Person A - Dex 12, 35 ft. movement (dash feat)
Person B - Dex 16, 30 ft. movement

They start out 30 ft. away from each other. So the target number (or TR) is 5 (30 divided by 5).

Now, A and B roll 1d20 each. A gets a +2 bonus (+1 from Dex and + 1 from his 35 ft. movement). While B gets a +3 bonus (from his Dex of 16). A rolls a 12 for a total of 14, while B rolls an 8 for a total of 11. A wins, and because A is trying to catch B, the TR is now 4 instead of 5. You repeat this process until one gives up, or one catches the other. Once the TR equals 1, A can make an attack, cause he has 5 ft. reach. A makes a grapple check and succeeds. The chase now ends and A has caught B.

Get it?

PS: I forgot to include rules for the run feat...hmm. I need to work on that. I guess you could just calculate their running speeds first, then find out the bonuses they receive. So a 30 ft. movement has a run speed of 120 ft, while a 35 ft. movement has a run speed of 140 ft. However, if person B (30 ft) has the run feat, then he runs at a 150 ft, that a 10 ft difference then person A, which would be a +2 more bonus.

So the new bonuses should be
person A has a +1 from dex
person B has a +5 from dex and the run feat.
sorry if i confused you with the second part...

i like the system, it is pretty good. i would use it if my players were into it but it is more complicated then they can handle....pot heads.....
but thank you for the ideas

GJ Dragonbringer, that seems like a very good system. going to have to use it

however, what would the rules be for the escapee winning? I would assume the DM could say after a certain distance they get a free escape (perhaps they reach a boat, allies, guards, etc.), but otherwise it could be running in circles for hours. Perhaps a system of allowing them to attempt to hide?

well think about this, howlong does it take to escape someone (a friend, police, a thug). It depends on the person and how determined they are to get you. Someone is going to wear out first. Now, imagine something that doesn't make endurance checks (undead) or something that isnt going to run out anytime soon. Things chould chase you until
a) you get somewhere they cant
b) you die
c) they actually do wear out or you just run WAY to fast for em...
