Playing with Level Adjust:]Branching Out ~ Playing a Race with a Level Adjust

The standard DND rules are ambiguous about how one should balance or even consider letting a player starting a character that has a level adjust (LA) – they could be even more confusing if attempting to adapt those vague rules to Custom Design d20. However, this has been thought of and it’s decently simple, that is – if the total level adjust is 4 or less. The DM remains the final arbitrator if any such race or template is not overpowered and should be considered incompatible with the power level of the campaign world.

If the characters are starting at predetermined level simply subtract the level adjust to determine their Character Level (CL) – their Effective Level is unchanged however, and is used to determine how much XP they need to level (EL) and should for all purposes stay in sync with the party’s level. Additionally, if the CL is negative it is to be used as a penalty to the characters Ability Scores, this goes away as the character progresses in CL.

The next thing the player needs to do is choose the characters ‘Destine Role’ which must be stuck with until they reach CL1 – after that they may advance and even multi-role like a normal character. Once this destiny is chosen the character refers to the below chart to determine what abilities are conferred as they level.

CL Warrior DP Skills Max Ranks
-3 Simple Weapons 0 0 0
-2 Light Armor 4 4+Int Mod 1
-1 Martial Weapons 4 4+Int Mod x2 2
0 Grit 4 4+Int Mod x3 3
1 Remainder, Feat 4 4+Int Mod x4 4

CL Specialist DP Skills Max Ranks
-3 Simple Weapons 0 0 0
-2 n/a 7 6+Int Mod 1
-1 n/a 8 6+Int Mod x2 2
0 n/a 9 6+Int Mod x3 3
1 Remainder, Feat 10 6+Int Mod x4 4

CL Mage DP Skills Max Ranks
-3 1x L0 Spell, 2/Day 1 0 0
-2 2x L0 Spell, 3/Day 2 2+Int Mod 1
-1 3x L0 Spell, 3/Day 3 2+Int Mod x2 2
0 1x L1 Spell, 1 SP 3 2+Int Mod x3 3
1 Remainder, Feat 3 2+Int Mod x4 4

Add previous levels together to find the character’s current package of Feats and DP. Do not figure their current skills or times per day a level 0 spell or power may be used in this fashion, for that one would simply take the value listed on the table. Starting Gold is determined by the Role divided by the LA.
The remainder of a normal character’s starting package is received when the character achieves Character Level 1 – this includes Save Bonuses, Base Attack Bonus, Spell Points, Bonus Feats, ‘Starting Feat’, DP awarded from taking Flaws & Restrictions, and any other abilities conferred by the Role.
A special note about Warriors – if the character uses DP to gain Martial Weapon proficiency at CL-2 then that DP spend on it will be refunded when they reach CL-1, when they would have received it.

If the CL is less than one any ability that bases its function upon Character Level is considered level one. This includes powers that cause level drain – even a single level drained can kill a character using these rules – players need to be aware of this vulnerability, such encounters will be more deadly for them.

Example: The characters are starting at level 1, Jaimee however wants to play a Half Dragon (LA+3). Her Character Level is -2, however her Effective Level is still 1 as that will determine how quickly she will advance. Because her CL is negative she has a -2 penalty to all of her Ability Scores. She wants her character to be destine to become a Specialist so this confers Simple Weapons Proficiency, 7 DP, 6+Int Mod in Skills, and Max skill ranks of 1 for any skills she may choose. DP of course may be saved – it does not have to be spent immediately. Not much, but she does have all the other abilities and modifiers as noted for a Half-Dragon. Starting money is twenty-three Gp, three Sp, and three Cp.

[sblock=Adapting a PRC:]Reaching Beyond the Basic Roles ~ Adapting Prestige Classes

Prestige Classes (PRC) are probably one of the most unique things about DND3.5 and this is not lost in Custom D&D. Some PRC may be easier to qualify using the Custom Role rules, however others may be harder to qualify for – this is as designed. Obtaining certain skill ranks in combinations with abilities that normally that don’t come with them In-Class is easier in Custom D&D – although Obtaining a higher base save for example, is harder to do in Custom D&D. Despite this, the qualifications listed for entering into any PRC is unchanged.

When taking levels in a PRC the character ceases advancing DP-Purchased and Role-Bestowed abilities unless that ability is explicitly advanced within the structure of the PRC. The character also ceases to gain additional DP and instead must depend on the PRC to determine their new array of abilities. Abilities that improve Combat Progression or add extra Favored Saves have no effect when taking a PRC.

Additionally, any unspent DP should be spent the level previous to entering into the PRC – during any level the character takes a PRC she may not spend DP to purchase any ability. If the player opts to save DP that DP can only be spent in the future when she again takes a level in a basic Role.

There are some special rules – these mimic the multi-role rules.
The most improvement that can be made on any Base Save is one per level – when taking the first level of a new PRC the Favored Saves only confers a +1 bonus, not a +2 as noted on the chart.

The most Grit that can be obtained is one per level. The character continues to gain Grit until he has the amount determined by the PRC, the end maximum this can be is four levels of Grit. Grit is not lost if the character goes into a PRC that has less Grit that what the character had before he entered it.
Please reference the below table – PRC Grit:

PRC Hit Die PRC Grit
d4 0
d6 1
d8 2
d10 3
d12 4

The DM should make all other determinations regarding if a special ability is advanced by a PRC.
