They say it's too random. As an experiment some of them have been toying with the idea of replacing the d20 with 2d10. This hasn't been playtested yet, but the odds curve it creates is interesting.\ Has anyone experimented with this? Is anyone willing to experiment with it during one of their play sessions and give a report? Thanks. |

Keep in mind that the chance of rolling each number on 1d20 is 5%. 1 0% 2 1% 3 2% 4 3% 5 4% 6 5% 7 6% 8 7% 9 8% 10 9% 11 10% 12 9% 13 8% 14 7% 15 6% 16 5% 17 4% 18 3% 19 2% 20 1% Note that there's no way to get a '1' with 2d10. You might think that would improve the rolls overall. You have a 55% chance of rolling 11-20, which is 5% better than with a d20. But where as you have a 20% chance of rolling 17-20 on a d20, you have only a 10% chance on 2d10. So your players will experience less randomness, but also less success, because more of their rolls will fall in the middle. |

Correct. The "concept" from the folks that hate the d20 is that this makes skill more important than the dice roll. |

| trappedslider05-29-07, 07:54 PM | Or you could just go with the suggestion from UA and use 3d6 instead of the d20 |
| i_am_some_guy05-30-07, 02:43 PM | By skill based I mean combat as well as skill rolls; also saving throws... any roll a d20 is used for you'd use 2d10. The object isn't to remove all randomness, but to reduce the wildness of the curve. 3d6 doesn't work -- it requires too much change to the system as a whole to work. at least with 2d10 you can still follow the d20 rules; you'll just have fewer 20s.... Personally, I don't mind the d20 roll, but a number of folks I play with have issue and this was one of their ideas. |
