| strange_person09-02-07, 08:00 PM | I have been to the Guardians of Order website and attempted to download it several times. Each time, the files containing useful rules information just give me an error message… Does anyone know where I could get a working copy? I have an account at YouSendIt, if that makes things simpler. |

| strange_person09-02-07, 08:59 PM | They are insufficiently versatile, and I don't particularly like called shots. The Canadian system can, with a single point-buy system, work out stats and price for everything from a shiv to a sailing ship to a space station. |
| Ranger REG09-03-07, 02:00 AM | "The Canadian system"??? :evillaugh Didn't realize the Canadian government used their taxpayers' money to develop a rulesystem mechanics for RPG. :smirk: I know what you're referring to (developed by Pulver at Guardians of Order). I happen to have the so-called documents. :D |
| strange_person09-03-07, 10:15 AM | I happen to have the so-called documents. :D How could they be transferred from your domain to mine? |
| Ranger REG09-04-07, 01:45 AM | PM me. |
| TFVanguard09-07-07, 12:22 AM | What's wrong with the D20 Future mecha rules? http://wizards.com/default.asp?x=d20/article/msrd Short answer? They're awful. I mean, honestly, the STRENGTH of your 120' tall mecha is dependant on the strength of the pilot? Paper-thin armor and HP for what they are (in keeping with d20M's ridiculous treatment of vehicles). Scrying my toilet after an unfortunate bout with a Taco Bell special would result in a better mecha system than d20F. |
| strange_person09-07-07, 11:25 AM | Precisely. Let's say I own a mech, and I go to a mechanic and say "I really like this mech, but I want to upgrade the muscles a bit. I'm going on an extended mission, and I want to carry an extra half-ton of ammo without it slowing me down." In the Guardians of Order system, the mechanic's response is "Sure! Of course, I'll need to amplify the core containment to account for the extra load, and put some high-test knees on special order, double-check all the existing hydraulics just to be safe… $130,000, and I'll get it back to you by tuesday." The DM just needs to figure out how many points the proposed upgrade is, run the old and new values through a simple formula, and subtract the original cost. In the D20 Modern system, the mechanic could justifiably say "What're you asking me for? Just go to that gym across the street and lift some weights." I mean, sure, Future Tech fixed some of that, but 1) I shouldn't need to buy two books to get a playable system; if space in D20 Future was really that tight, I would prefer that they remove some of the rules systems enrtirely and have a smaller number of more useful sections. 2) Even with Future Tech, there are still serious problems, both with the mecha system itself and with how it balances against, say, starships. |
| Ranger REG09-08-07, 02:01 AM | In the D20 Modern system, the mechanic could justifiably say "What're you asking me for? Just go to that gym across the street and lift some weights." Could, or improve the technology to boost strength bonus even further, and that should cost you serious purchase DC. Sure, the mech uses one's pilot's strength, but it also boost it, amplifying one's strength proportionally to the size of the mechanical construct. One could argue what the myomer technology in BattleTech does. I mean, sure, Future Tech fixed some of that, but 1) I shouldn't need to buy two books to get a playable system; if space in D20 Future was really that tight, I would prefer that they remove some of the rules systems enrtirely and have a smaller number of more useful sections. In hindsight, they could have done that in the first place, now knowing the volumes of material. But what's done is done. |
| strange_person09-09-07, 07:11 PM | Have you figured out what the deal is with chapter 2b, that your most recent e-mail gave me a readable copy when I've previously only gotten chapters 0 and 3? |
| Ranger REG09-10-07, 01:49 AM | Have you figured out what the deal is with chapter 2b, that your most recent e-mail gave me a readable copy when I've previously only gotten chapters 0 and 3? Chapter 0 - OGL and Legal Info Chapter 1 - Introduction, Mecha Pilot Class, Skills, Feats Chapter 2a - Mecha Overview, Mecha Creation Rules Chapter 2b - Abilities and Defects Chatper 2c - Weapons Chapter 3 - Mecha Combat No offense, but I hate Apple. Don't understand why it cannot read RTF. Anyhoo, what is it about Chapter 2b (Abilities and Defects)? |
| strange_person09-10-07, 09:58 AM | Apple can read RTF. I have never had any issue with that format whatsoever. Up to this point, every time I try to download a copy of the D20 Mecha SRD, I have gotten an error message, "this file cannot be opened" for chapters 1, 2a, 2b, and 2c. That is a completely different error message from "Unknown format." Chapters 0 and 3 have worked just fine, but they don't have the rules I'm interested in. In the most recent e-mail you sent, I was able to open chapter 2b, which I have not previously been able to. Chapters 1, 2a, and 2c still yeild only an error message. To confirm that this is not an Apple-exclusive problem, I sent one of my copies of chapter 2c to a freind with I believe a Unix system. The file was opened successfully, but yeilded only 3 hexidecimal characters, suggesting that it had been irretrievably corrupted. |
| strange_person09-12-07, 05:17 PM | Thank you, Ranger REG! I now have working copies of all the Mecha SRD sections I was looking for. I still don't know what the deal was with the previous copies I've gotten, and those previous copies still don't work, but now I've got it working so I don't care. Thank you. |
| strange_person09-12-07, 05:18 PM | Double post. |
| Ranger REG09-12-07, 10:20 PM | Whew! No prob. |
