The flapping sounds of merchant tents drown out most sounds within the marketplace this fine morning as a cool wind blows through the streets of Phalemor. Traders and vendors scurry about as they prepare for a day of brisk business. About a block away sits the Dancing Badger Inn, one of the city’s local watering holes. Even at this early hour the Inn is bustling with patrons.

Priló the halfling thief was always a mischievous sort, getting himself into all kinds of trouble. He tries to steal almost anything from anybody…more as just a game then any real crime. If caught, he smiles, and returns the stolen item with a sheepish grin.

One day, Priló got himself into too much hot water. A traveling noble merchant named Lord Galivar arrived in the city of Caronis from the exotic lands far to the west. In the confusion of the Caronis marketplace, Priló managed to get close enough to “accidentally” bump into Lord Galivar and simultaneously steal his pouch from him.

After deftly vanishing among the crowed throng, Priló later examined the contents of the pouch. It contained a large diamond, which Priló estimated to be at least 10,000 gold pieces in value! Knowing that this was a very hot item and not knowing how to get rid of it, the Halfling rogue fled the city of Caronis. He traveled for a week before stopping in the city of Phalemor, which is a way-stop for travelers and adventurers.

Anxious to get rid of the gem, Priló sold it to a traveling wizard for a fraction of its cost, although still making a tidy sum of gold. The wizard then left with some roving companions to explore an old ruined castle supposedly hidden somewhere in the woods east of Phalemor. The wizard and his group never returned.

Priló has been lying low in Phalemor for several weeks now, bidding his time. But he has just learned of some dark and dangerous looking individuals who are asking about him on the streets. He fears, correctly, that there were sent by Lord Galivar to retrieve the gem or at least to settle the score with the Halfling. Priló is not able to pay back even a tiny portion of the gem’s value, because he spent all the money he got for selling it on masterwork pieces of equipment he had custom made for himself.

The three arrivals in town are bounty hunters sent by Lord Galivar through his underground connections with the Assassin’s Guild. They are led by a human female. They are ruthless mercenaries and assassins. Their first goal is to retrieve the diamond. Should that prove impossible, they are to bring back the head of the Halfling thief to Lord Galivar.

Priló has spotted the three bounty hunters on his trail. They are closing in on him quickly. He figures his only chance is to find some protection. Perhaps from a group of adventurers within the city walls…

As the Inn comes to life, a small bundle of blankets near the hearth begins to shuffle about. Out from under the pile of worn woolen covers pops a Halfling. He is dressed in all dark earth tones, from boots to the tilted cap upon his head.

The gathering crowd awakens Priló from a restless nights sleep. The Halfling sits up as he rubs his lower back…Hard wooden bench does not make a good substitute for a fine feather bed. He mutters to himself as he stands and begins to stretch. Suddenly fear stricken, he drops to the floor as he remembers he is sought after by some unsavory types.

Swiftly he looks about for his weapon, a large dagger of sorts that would easily pass for a short sword in the hands of someone his size. Ahh! There you are! He mumbles as he crawls under the bench to retrieve his blade.

Well gents here we are, wine, women and song. Looks to be a profitable town here but remember keep your mouths shut and your eyes open. Keep a low profile until we can survey the situation. I’d rather not be seen here until we can be sure that my friend Moru here can come through on his promise of the finest ale this side of the mountains. What’s the name of this place again? And are you sure it will be out of the way enough? Jerisean don’t even start looking at the women, we all know how it works first you see one then you have to dance with one then we’re all dragged into a fight.

As the half-orc entered Phalemor’s city gates, the guards watched as a large grey and black war horse moved slowly up the road. Its rider covered in black studded leather, a dark cape with silver edging flowed around him as a light breeze blew, his stunning white hair and beard contrasted against his armor. He definitely drew attention from those about the city as his numerous weapons were on full display. But he knew all to well about those that would love to take down his kind just for sport, which being the case he had chosen not to hide his defenses.

As Kuvas Marfu neared the market place he paused a moment at a watering trough to give his steed a much deserved drink. While waiting he drew quite a few stares, then was approached by several children. He looked down at them…Good day youngling’s, might one of you know where I can find a stable and an Inn? The tallest one spoke up quickly…Yes! Yes sir… ah… He turned and pointed down the road. It’s that way, like three blocks or so, look for the Dancing Badger, they have a corral and barn out back. Kuvas reached into his pouch and dug out a couple of copper coins and tossed them to the lad. Much appreciated son, get you and your friends here some treats. With that he rode on to the Inn.

Weary but eager, Jeriseán longs for their arrival at the Inn. Am I correct in assuming then that old Moru here is buyin’ the first round? The rogue struts confidently down the street smiling to various maidens he passes by. He swiftly turns to the Ranger, his mentor of sorts though he would never admit it. Women? …what women...and that last fight wasn't my fought, I'm sure of it!

Moru, a bit infuriated that they walked through the night to reach Phalemor, finally ends his complaining as they enter the city gates. “Yes my friends, as I’ve said before…now you will have your chance to taste the best ale that can be brewed, outside of Dwarven hands that is.” Moru leads the way, his stout legs picking up their pace as he senses the end of their journey nears. “The Dancing Badger Inn, that is the place my friends, not much further now.” As the Rogue defends himself against Elagost’s accusation the dwarf responds without easing his stride. “I’m sorry lad, but if was you, if I’ve said it ta ya once, I’ve said it a hundred times… steer clear of Elven woman!”

After much persuading, Kuvas leaves his horse with the suspicious stable boy along with a few extra coppers. As he makes his way around to the front of the inn he spots an odd grouping of figures. There is something strangely familiar about those individuals. The half-orc thinks to himself as he watches them approach.

OOC…I was planning on having Kuvas know you guys, perhaps a while back he joined you on an adventure or two but then continued on alone once more. Please play along. ;)

As the ranger approaches the inn he notices a hulking figure, well-armed and striding with confidence. He pretends not to notice but winks to the ever-vigilant Moru. Then the ranger thinks to himself could Kuvas possibly grow any larger. Iwonder how long it will take Jerisean to notice our old friend.

With Priló’s grip now secure around his dagger he lifts up a bit to peer over the bench as a barmaid takes him by surprise. Good morning my small master! …may I bring you something? The Halfling instantly drops the dagger to the floor as he spins about to see a young maiden bowing over toward him, nearly revealing her bountiful bosom to the tiny thief.

Moru instinctively catches on to the Ranger’s signal as he easily spots the half breed. The Dwarf eases his measured gait as he lets the rogue move ahead of him. Moru then returns a nod to Elagost as he draws near to his side. “Let us see how the lad handles this aye?” He mutters softly to the Ranger.

As the half-orc looked on a smile began to crease his face as the Rogue drew closer. Ah… captain Elagost, master Moru …and that scoundrel Jerisean. It seems my venture into the city is blessed by Obad-Hai, he has brought me friends. As the girl watcher is distracted Kuvas steps into his path.

Jeriseán drowns out the sound of Moru’s advice, as he often does when the dwarf begins one of his lectures. His thoughts quickly shift to two ladies tending a bread cart. As he waves a gloved hand in their direction he suddenly can sense closing in on something or someone as a shadow comes across his face. The rogue turns back just as he walks into the orc. Priló scampers to his feet… Yes! …yes you can milady, I… I’ll have a bowl of cornmeal with goats milk and some nice crispy bacon…and some mead. As the barmaid runs off, Priló digs into his money pouch and pulls out his last few coins. It is finally all gone… guess I best get back to work. The Halfling takes a seat and continues to scout the room, this time not for those that are following him but for possible targets to exercise his craft.

At the moment Kuvas clamps unto his arms Jeriseán realizes who it is the instant the half-orc’s familiar odor enters his nostrils. Put me down Marfu! …he says with a much disgusted expression. As his feet meet the road he begins to rub his right arm. As the Barbarian turns to walk off with the Ranger…Welcome back I suppose, you could have hurt my sword arm you big lummox. Though Jeriseán could not find fault with the large humanoid when it came to his value in a fight, for they had seen many a scrap together, but still he didn’t consider themselves friends on a first name basis. JT follows along to the inn, his pride a bit injured from the incident but this was common fare for him.

After much persuading, Kuvas leaves his horse with the suspicious stable boy along with a few extra coppers. As he makes his way around to the front of the inn he spots an odd grouping of figures.

Thaddeus arrived at the stables early for a change, but a change he was not suspecting loomed around the corner. He had just finished feeding the few horses they had when an unlikely customer rode up.

The young lad was a bit taken aback when the half-orc Kuvas walked in. Often talkative, Thad couldn’t muster a word as he just nodded and took his horse. As the orc stepped out Thad secured the animal then stared at the coins in his hand for a minute or two.

It was then that the thought hit him to follow the stranger. Quickly he sprang to the loft and retrieved his sword and a small pack he kept just incase this occasion would one day arrive. He left a note for his father on the anvil and sped off after what he thought was surely an adventure.

Priló watched, his eyes glued to the entry as the barmaid returned with his order. The Halfling’s heart began to beat faster as he observed the group of new arrivals. His eye’s light up at the sight of the orc. Ahh! ….there be your next target master Priló. The half pint thief muttered to himself as his ego swelled, for he loved a challenge. He paid the server then quickly swept up his dagger and began to slowly make his way through the morning crowd.

Unknown to the Halfling, the half-orc has vowed not to partake of ale or other intoxicating beverages when he became a follower of Obad-Hai. Though not a mandatory requirement, Kuvas wanted not to dull his senses ever again as he walked amongst his god’s creation. Amidst the hustle and bustle of the morning rush Priló makes his move. The thoughts of a hefty coin purse gave him goose bumps. As a server came by with a full tray of tankards, the little thief stuck out his hairy foot and tripped her. As the girl lost hold of the tray it flew forward into the middle of the Ranger’s table splattering ale everywhere. But as the Halfling went for the barbarian’s bag he is wrapped up and tackled from behind. Both Priló and Thaddeus fall to the wooden floor as all hell breaks loose around them.
