First, keep in mind this is just a curiosity and theoretical thread. What one may define as a gish may be considered something completely different by another. I've searched and not found many that give their "definition" of a gish. In your words, what, exactly, is a gish?

Or, more exactly:

Define "gish"Any character with (nearly full or better) arcane magic and high BAB would fit in fine in 'gish' threads on this board.

The word apparently comes from a word used to describe Githyanki or Githzerai (I forget) multiclass wizard/fighters - or something - back in the olde days before 3rd ed.

Some(many?) people will argue that anything with magic and the ability to panel-beat your face ought to be considered a gish.

A "Gish" is a magically augmented fighter. The Psychic Warrior base class is the Gish equivalent of Spam: yes, it's meat, but there's so much more you can do with meat that you can't do with Spam.

A gish is a warrior first and caster second; their magic is used to buff and then their sword to kill stuff. Many people simply mean 4 attacks on a full attack and xth level spells. Also, almost all gishes on these boards are arcane or psionic gishes. Divine gishes are too easy.

A gish could, conversely, be a caster first and a warrior second. The important part is the hybridization. They might call down arcane fire one round, buff themselves the next, then lay out some smack with a weapon on the third. The psychic warrior, duskblade, and cleric are gishes by default.

See my signature for the "ultimate gish contest" read the two threads associated with it. I think you'll get more information on what "gish" means than you ever cared to know in those threads.

Githzerai Laddies Love Cool L(iches). { note : the two D's are intentional }

Cleric 20 with Divine Power has BAB +20 and 9th level spells.
Wizard 18 / Wyrm Wizard 2 can have Divine Power, so BAB +20 and 9th level spells.
Ardent 4 / +1 BAB 2 / Slayer 10 / Storm Disciple 4 has BAB +19 and 9th level "spells" 20ML.

Divine Power is dispel-able, though so coming up with high BAB without magic is a goal.
Wizards don't get Armor without {you} buying lots of books.
Psionics don't get no respect; the Rodney Dangerfield of D&D.

I thought divine/fighters weren't gishes, but had their own name.
