| Sakris03-21-07, 05:28 PM | I'd like to play a cleric with the possibility of turning myself into a melee-machine when the situation calls for it thanks to Divine Favor / Divine Power / Righteous Might. The only problem I have is having to cast 3 spells before I can start fighting. How can I speed up my buffing? Sources: 3.5, without Complete Divine. So far I have: Quicken Spell Sudden Quicken |
| Tempest Stormwind03-21-07, 05:33 PM | Sakris, this thread (like your other one) belongs in Character Optimization, not theoretical optimization. That said, I'd look into Persistent Spell and have them last all day; you're playing a cleric and using cheesy cleric spells, so why not go all out? However, without Complete Divine (and its wonderful Divine Metamagic), you're going to have a hard time casting those. |
| Sakris03-21-07, 05:41 PM | Hm... isn't this Board called "Optimization Challenge"? Thanks for the hint with persistent spell... without DMM it'll be hard though... I mean, Divine Power being a 4th level spell, and Righteous Might a 5th lvl.... + 6 lvls from Persistent = nono. |
| Tempest Stormwind03-21-07, 06:43 PM | Hm... isn't this Board called "Optimization Challenge"? Thanks for the hint with persistent spell... without DMM it'll be hard though... I mean, Divine Power being a 4th level spell, and Righteous Might a 5th lvl.... + 6 lvls from Persistent = nono. 1) Look up at the top. It's Theoretical Optimization. 2) Even if it were Optimization Challenge, that isn't a challenge. 3) See the sticky at the top of the forum for this forum's purpose. I don't know enough about cleric optimization to help further than what I've done (I avoid playing divine casters because of all their horrid balance issues). What's the reason for no Complete Divine? No one have it, or does the DM (sanely) try to keep cleric cheese down? |
| PhaedrusXY03-21-07, 09:27 PM | Craft Contingent Spell is probably your best bet. It is in a few books. The one I have with it is Unapproachable East, but I know it has been reprinted in newer ones. A cleric build that lets you cast arcane spells would give you access to the Contingency spell itself. (There are several methods for this, including the Magic and Spell domains, Dweomerkeeper PrC, etc). This combined with a Lesser Quicken Rod would let you get two of them off without "wasting" actions. So you could cast one as a standard, and quicken one, on your first turn. Then next round, quicken the last, and commence to beating heads. |
| Sakris03-22-07, 03:56 AM | Hm, board names change every month oO Well feel free to move my thread, I apparently don't have the rights for that. My DM does not allow Complete Divine because he says it's unbalanced, which I can understand... Contingent Spell sounds nice! So could I, as a lvl 11 Cleric craft those 3 spells on myself with a trigger like "entering combat"? The base price would then be 100g * 11 * 5 (Righteous Might) = 5500g, meaning I have to pay 220 xp and 2750g for that? Kind of expensive... Could you further explain the version with the spell? |
| Tleilaxu_Ghola03-22-07, 04:03 AM | Here's the cheapest way I can think of: Rod of many Wands (Complete Mage): 1 wand, each with the spell of choice. I think all of those spells are 4th level or less, no? Anyways, if they are... then make wands of them and buy this rod. As a full round action, again if I remember correctly, you can activate the rod to activate all 3 wands at once. This will drain 3 charges from eacg wand, however. |
| FriendlyFrog03-22-07, 10:23 AM | Races of Destiny has the Illumian race, who can use an ability similar to Divine metamagic 2/day. You will need 12 turn undead attempts, so either have a high Charisma, take Extra turning or buy a Nightstick or two (Libris mortis). Take Persistent spell and persist both Divine power and Righteous might. Persistent Divine favor is doable even without any tricks, and you can just have a few Quickened Divine favors prepared before you'll be able to cast 7th level spells (have a Metamagic rod of Extend spell at hand to help with the duration of 1 min). |
| PhaedrusXY03-22-07, 01:45 PM | Kind of expensive... Could you further explain the version with the spell?Actually, it works even better than I thought originally. Here is one version. Take the Magic domain, and buy a staff with Contingency in it. Use that to put a Contingent Divine Power on you, with whatever trigger you want (when I shout "BY THE POWER OF GREYSKULL!", etc ;) ). Also, buy a lesser metamagic rod of quicken spell. Round 1: Cast Righteous Might (standard action), cast a Quickened (via the rod) Divine Favor, and also yell whatever command word triggers your Contingency (you could also have it trigger whenever you cast the Quickened Divine Favor). This lets you get all your buffs up in a single round. Unfortunately, you have to recast your Contingency if you want to use it more than once per day. That is all core only. If you can use Dweomerkeeper, you could pick Contingency as a spell for your "Mantle of Spells". I'm not terribly familiar with how all of that works. You might find more info in the Cheater of Mystra (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=248239) thread. |
| Sakris03-22-07, 02:05 PM | Very nice @ Friendly! Exactly what I was looking for, lets see if my DM allows it :-) If not I'll go for the Contingency thing - definetly less cheesy - I'm digging "BY THE POWER OF GREYSKULL!" already ;-) |
| PhaedrusXY03-22-07, 03:53 PM | I'm sure there are probably some domains that give Contingency as a spell, also. I think Time does (Forgotten Realms). A staff with only the Contingency spell in it (not really legal) would cost ~25,000 gp (EDIT: to craft). A 6th level Pearl of Power costs 36,000 gp. If you actually think you'd use up the staff, you might be better off taking the Time domain and using Pearls of Power if you need to cast the spell more than once per day. |
| hogarth03-22-07, 04:34 PM | A staff with only the Contingency spell in it (not really legal) would cost ~25,000 gp. Au contraire, mon frere! Just ask the Sage: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ask/20070307a "Q: Dear Sage, Can a magic staff hold only one spell? --Nelson A: Yes. Even though all the staffs presented in the Dungeon Master’s Guide contain multiple spells, the rules don’t expressly ban you from crafting a staff with only one spell (and what’s more, it’s not significantly unbalancing to do so)." |
| Sakris03-22-07, 05:20 PM | Id really like to get an extra attack in my buffed form.... so far I only know that I could take the time domain for haste - any other Ideas? |

| Prominence03-26-07, 11:08 AM | Righteous Wrath of the Faithful... a spell I consider stronger than Divine Favor or Righteous Might. |
| Sakris03-26-07, 11:52 AM | Already on my list - awesome spell! |
