I'm a fan of giant robot fights, and I'm always ready to play a good game that gives me the feel of giant robots fighting. But I've so far been unimpressed with RPGs that bring it to the table. So I started making my own:
Dicusion Thread on the setting's background (http://www.thecbg.org/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?39727.last)
Discussions on Mechanics (http://bb.bbboy.net/thegamingden-viewthread?forum=6&thread=161)

I need more coverage. I need opinions and new ideas. Or at least a pat on the back every once in a while.

Oh god yes. I saw the thread title and my jaw dropped with the beauty of this idea. Eva would be the perfect campaign for an RPG! It has everything - action, mystery, horror, comedy, tragedy, romance ... the only problem, of course, is trying to get the mechanics to work. While piloting an eva I would keep track of the player's synchronicity ratio in order to determine how much damage they take from attacks and how effectively they can move. Possibly something like a Wisdom check, with success indicating a high dex and high damage potential, and a failure indicating low dex and low damage potential.
I would definitely include the sanity system, considering the mind-shattering things the characters will have to go through. I'd also strongly advise against playing this campaign with anyone who has seen the show in order to maintain that sense of mystery. If you introduce Kaworu as an NPC, you don't want people to already know what's going to happen.

Um... I'm not the kind of person that would run a game that would include a person saying exactly what Shinji said, while another person would say exactly what Asuka said, and then expect me as the DM to stare blankly into the abyss of my own psychotic heart while my XXL glasses reflect the vapid look on Rei's face.
I'm infinitely more likely to have a "Bill Nye" running Nerve and a "Lucy Diclonius" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elfen_lied) running the medical facilities than play out one of the four cannon continuities of Evangelion as if it was a drama script. If I wanted to the latter, I join a drama club.

-----|----- But enough about me, let's talk about the features of my game. -----|-----

Giant Robots: I dig 'em. You dig 'em. Chicks dig 'em. 'Nough said.
Probably The Most Versatile Weapon And Armor System You Have Ever Seen: Speaks for itself.
Magical Powers Mechanic: Current rules allow you to mimic the defensive aspects of an AT field and
Radio Active Tentacles of Doomtm, as well as assisting with flight, "spell casting" and item manipulation.
Space Ships With Big Guns for player characters that don't want to be a whining emo kid with a Oedipus disorder that had his mom sacrificed to power the mech.

Previous post was very funny...:)

Anyway, 2 cents. The EVA seem to be the real asset. I mean that if Gendou Ikari cold pick a skilled combat pilot with martial training and years of experience the EVA 01 , 02 and 03 would have been far more powerful. As of the Angel attack, the Robot was way better than its pilot (or her pilot, since the were all she-bots) and the marked power gap between EVAs and Angel is what kept mankind alive (until Shinji decided to screw everything up anyway). The Angels attacked, three emo kids was all Gendou could deploy, and they'd have to do. Besides, if the AVEs didn't take over every now and then flying in a berserker fury, the series would have ended at episode 1.
In a game conversion I suppose the pilots should not need to be too much like Shinji or Asuka. There'd have to be a link, a deep emotional link with the EVA for the pilot-robot sync, and once that was good enough there is no saying what a real pilot could do with that monster. Imagine to put Zack from the Gundam series in the EVA 01 cockpit....huuuuuhuhu...scary....

Three and a half steps ahead of you. Click the links in the first post!

But if it suits you, you can play as an ace mech pilot as you gain levels. I actually have level ups available in this system, so pilots can improve themselves.

Up and Coming Crunch:
Sanity Rules and Psychic Attacks - I'm thinking a simple Russian Roulette style degeneration of a mech pilot's brain, and starships have their crew men stop working one unit at a time.

Special Ability Slots - kinda like how feats should've worked in D&D.

Magical Spells - Do stuff your equipment doesn't enable.

Discussion on the game mechanics have turned the game upside down. In a good way. It is now possible for two mechs to mutually blow each other up, and for you to attack something 'till you stop functioning. Sweet huh?

Also, I'm holding a contest. Take this image:

and make it better. Like way better.
Then email it to me.
The winning picture gets used as the cover page for the .PDF I will have made when the rules and a basic amount of flavour text is available. The winning picture's maker will get full credit for it, and the losers will have theirs deleted from my data banks. (Sorry)

Also, I'm going to get my website polished up and ready for some applicants to join in on certain aspects of the project.

SWEET MERCIFUL CRAP!

Another EVA topic? We barely survived the LAST one! Everyone, to the bomb shelters! Follow me!

...

:whatsthis Ok, now that we're down here and safe... Have you thought about introducing a psychotic character into the mix? Something similar to Asuka perhaps, if she were to learn that she got passed over for giant, ego-boosting, super robot combat?

And then were provided a robot of her own, as long as she killed the PCs off?

Or is that too evil to throw at your players? :smirk:

I don't know about any other Evangelion topics. I must have missed them.
Good thing too. All of the other Eva games that I found were random flavour text from the show attached to numbers. And don't get me started on Gundam Wing d20.

-----

In case you missed something from the previous posts, be aware that I'm not stating that I'm going to be running some half-assed attempt at incorporating a giant robots into D&D. That's an exercise in futility.
I'm actually developing in depth rules for tactical giant robot combat.
The psychic attacks section of the rules is done. And I can tell you that it's going to be a horrible experience to fight an enemy using psychic attacks.

As to fluffy stuff for the game:

Steps to running a Eva inspired game.

1) Purchase d20 Modern and the d20 future splat book.

2) Force yourself to stay awake for 4-6 days so that you are stark raving mad.

3) ???

4)Profit.

No. I don't want to work for WotC. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Added rules and guidelines for shields, repairing (healing), and stealth.
Also, a few tweaks to the weapon creation rules to keep the game from going to crazy town after Lvl6.

In space, no one can here you turn your cloaking device on.

Still waiting entries for the contest.

The game is really coming along in development. While generating a set of theoretical values, I noticed a number of horrible flaws with my entity creation system.
So I scrapped it all and started over. I'm certain I'm close to attaining a model closer to my original design intent. Too bad levels had to go entirely. I was looking forward to calling my self a Lvl12 Mecha Pilot.

There's a new sheriff in town... and he ain't human.

Also: All contest entries are closed. Everyone loses.

Hahaha!

You know how when someone who hasn't played D&D asks, "When does the game end?" and you reply, "It doesn't."
Evangelion is an awesome fit because it has no ending either. -oO
