Hello out there,

Currently looking to build the Alchemy from FMA into a viable system fit for play in D20. I think I'm going to use the Star Wars Force rules for how alchemy works (single shot powers selected with feats, 1 minute rest to recover).

What I have so far is the following...

Skills

Use Alchemy (Cha or Wis?)
- Cannot be used untrained.
- Skill uses include "minor" transmutation and repairs (ala Al fixing the radio in Ep 1 and using alchemy to repair things like glasses, guns, toys etc.)
- Cha or Wis because this determines the STRENGTH of your alchemy, or your natural talent in it rather than WHAT you can do with your powers, that falls under Knowledge, since alchemy is a science as well as a talent.

Knowledge: Metalurgy, Biology, Stonework, Chemistry, Physics.
- Breaking up "Knowledge: Physical Sciences" into seperate skills.
- Need to make an appropriate Knowledge check in order do different and inetersting things with Alchemy.

Feats

Alchemical Talent
- Prereq: Must be selected at Level 1
- Benefit: Alchemy is now a trained skill, can select Alchemical Talents and take the feat Alchemical Training.

Alchemical Training
- Prereq: Trained in Use Alchemy
- Benefit: Select your (Cha or Wis modifier) +1 in Alchemy powers.

Alchemy Powers
- Note: In accordance with some of the Force rules, your skill result in Use Alchemy will determine the effect of the power. Here is also where it gets muddy as I need to develop the system so that it allows for excessive creativity in attack styles (ex. Major Armstrong and his spike punching alchemy, or Roy Mustang and his innovative use of Flame).

The Law of Equivalent Exchange: Alchemy must work off of specific materials, if you do not have the materials necessary for the size of the transmutation you cannot perform it. Ex. if you want to create a Simple Large Object you need a Large amount of material, or if you want to make a Medium Complex Object you need a Large Amount of Material. (I also need to paraphrase flavor text from the Anime but I don't have it 'on hand' at the moment)

Power Ideas

Create Simple Object - Ex. Ed creates a sword out of his arm, spear out of the ground etc.

Creat Complex Object - Ex. Ed creates a cannon, Unammed Alchemist creates a Balloon, Ed Creates A Radio. Rule: Complex Objects are smaller on average than Simple object, requiring a greater skill roll.

Shield - Creates a Sheild out of nearby materials. Size and Strength depend on skill roll.

Note- The powers are meant to be broad to encourage creativity. Prestige classes will allow weirder abilities such as Chimera Creation, Element Manipulation (Mustang/Alphonse in FMA:COS), Physical Amplification(Armstrong, Basque Grande) or Healing (May Chang, Tim Marcoh).

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

how about a feat to identify the components of an item?

transmutation circles? drawn circles(alphonse) Body circles (siren) circleless alchemy(edward) more complex circles grant a bonus for more complex alchemy

Automail: physical bonuses as well as basic materials

I would say that Ed's alchemy is more powerful for his high Int, too. It lets him find the weak points in things, etc.

Anyway, you might have seen the other systems already, but here they are:
Nightscreamer20's class (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=498216)
Need_A_Life's class (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=810893)

Good points but I don't think high INT means more powerful alchemy, because Roy's alchemy is just as powerful as Ed's but Ed is clearly the more "academically" intelligent of the two, granted Roy's a schemer but that's Int, Wis and Cha working together. And what about Armstrong? His alchemy is DEFINATELY powered by Charisma and amplified by his Strength.

A different feat for each form of identification is a little cumbersome and really limits the players freedom to sort of build their own alchemy style (my primary intent).
