thou shalt need:

1) Deities and demigods <- Got's all the gods and other stuff.

2)Epic level handbook <- Most of the non-gods presented are epic (unless they die quickly (for example most normal enemies) , then they are 20th or less.

Otherwise you just need creaivity.

The guy asked if anyone had an idea as to how to run a God of War game, i pointed him to the best books for it.

Since none has coordinated anyones efforts, you should ask none about helping anyone. ;)

In other words, go right ahead.

Try gestalt fighter/barbarian (Unearthed Arcana).

*Recollects daughter_of_hades brain pieces from the ground*
You didn't have to do such a mess over it...

Why gestalt? he is an Epic character, he could be like hercules with 20 levels of each and 20 more levels of something (10 more for each of the two clasess?) because otherwise he doesn't stand a chance against any of the gods on the Deities and demigods book single handedly.

The best book I have seen for "Greek" campaigns is Trojan War (http://www.greenronin.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=1001&Product_Code=grr1405) by Green Ronin. Also available as a PDF from RPGnow.com. It includes maps, gods, new classes, mass combat rules, and greek style armor and magical items.

The "Ghost of Sparta" is an epic level character, but he didn't start as one. It would be up to the DM whether to start as a first level PC or a 21st level PC.

Most of the mythical beasts of Greece are in the MM1 (harpies, minotaurs, gorgons, medusas, etc.). A cyclops could be a stone giant with only one eye. Adding class levels to monsters is a great way to boost their CR without increasing their size. Most monsters in God of War do not have the intelligence to be a PC optional race.

I think one the the things you need to develop for God of War to be a full campaign is to create "races" of Greeks. The "races" of Greece are based on which city-state or island they come from since all the PC's will be human. War and trade in the Hellenic Empire is based on the politics of city-states and the gods they worship. Conflict is the essense of any game storyline.

Possible Human Sub-Races:

Spartans are bred for war. (+2 CON, -2 WIS modifier in addition to human traits)

Myrmidions were created by Apollo from polymorphed ants after disease had depopulated their native island (-2 INT and -2 CHA, Immune to disease (Ex), and standard human traits).

Trojans were known as people of the horse. They may have a +2 bonus on ride and handle animal checks, but suffer a -2 penalty on all other CHA based skill checks plus standard human traits.

Other Possible Sub-races: Amazons, Athenians, Cretes, Thebians, Lotus-eaters (Egyptians), Persians, etc.

Classes:
Most of the PHB core classes would work without modification. Trojan War presents some new core classes (but these are not required). I don't think gesalt classes are needed either, but they would make "Greek Hero" PC's much more powerful than NPC classes.

Charioteer Class PDF from Trojan War (http://64.17.155.164/gr_files/troy_pre.pdf)

Blades of Athena
The blades of Athena are a pair of short swords attached to chains that are bound to the arms of the ghost of sparta. They work much like a pair of +1 "grafted" flaming spiked chains.

New Magic Weapon Ability

Grafted A grafted weapon becomes part of the weilder. Light one-handed weapon can be retracted within the characters body (Spot DC: 10 plus Hide Skill of the weilder). A standard one-handed weapon can be used as if it were a "light" weapon due to the living bond between user and weapon. "Grafted" ability allows a 2-handed weapon to be used as a "one-handed weapon". Grafting enhancement counts as a +3 magical weapon feature. The character can't be disarmed of a weapon grafted to the character, but if the weapon is sundered the character will bleed 1d3 HP per round until the wound is sealed (Heal check DC: 30 or heal wounds spell). A 2-Handed grafted weapon has the STR Damage bonus of a one-handed weapon.

Religion

Rules for the basic greek pantheon (Zeus, Apollo, Ares, Hades, etc.) are not hard to find. Rules for the Titans are much harder to find.

Exiled Titans: Their are at least 12 titans. Each represents a specific "element". Zeus has imprisoned most of the titans within tartarus.
Uranus (Heaven/Ether, Father of Chronos and usurped by Chronos)
Gaia (Earth, Mother of Chronos)
Chronos (Time, Dethroned Uranus, Fathered Zeus and many of the other Greek gods)
Atlas (Vitality, supports the world on his shoulders, Keeps heaven and earth apart)
Oceanus (Water, father of the Mermaids)
Hyperion (Fire, creator of both sun and stars)
Mnemosyne (Memory, mother of the Muses)
Promethius (Chaos, gave fire and magic to mankind and was tortured by Zeus for the gift)
Rhea (Fertility, mother of the Olympic Gods, Wife of Chronos)
Themis (Law, Taught gods and mortals justice, order, and the rule of law)
Thea (Wind/Air Godess, Consort of Hyperion)

Assuming you want the over-the-top carnage of GoW, I'd strongly suggest taking a look at Book of 9 Swords.

Kratos as Crusader could be very frightening

The first question to ask is: Why stop playing the god of war video game?

Where are you trying to go that the game currently doesn't?

-after reading all of this and reconstructing her brain- i agree, he does need the epic handbook... and Kratos would be a barbarian, but since he uses magic, maybe he can be a prestige class, since he was a god after all
RAGNAROKISCOMING2007

how about making a new prestige class...."champion of the gods"?

Champion of the Gods”
There are many pantheons of gods and they all need champions to represent them. Kratos is one of these champions. He was bestowed the power of the greek gods. He has gained the following abilities:
· Poseidon's Rage: A magic power that allows Kratos to attack all enemies around him with a storm/electrical based power.
· Medusa's Gaze: Though not a true godly power, he can use the decapitated gorgon Medusa's head to turn enemies to stone.
· Zeus' Fury: A lightning based projectile that can be thrown by Kratos at high speeds. Can be charged for a more powerful attack.
· Army of Hades: Kratos can summon the invincible souls of the dead to attack enemies. Even Ares himself could not withstand them.
· Rage of the Gods: Kratos's most powerful magic. He can call upon the powers of the gods to become stronger, faster, invincibile, and have infinite magic.

That’s all I can come up with right now……………:embarrass
