Just say YES to 4.0 [Archive] - Wizards Community

Like many people have mentioned in the counter-thread, 4.0 is probably going to be a better game. Yes, 3.5 made everyone shell out for more of the same books (especially the splat books on every class) but they were better books. Some of the problems were fixed and game play was a little more smooth.

I'm not looking forward to spending more money. I wish the new game was free but it won't be. I look forward to the value of the new game over the old one. If you agree, go ahead and sign this thread!

And boy I hope they patch up the skill system and make Diplomacy a sight more combative.

Gee. :bored:

You make it sound like game designers shouldn't get paid for their effort. They deserve to get paid!

Yes. I will say Yes to 4.0, because I'm a logical, intelligent person.

Is that to say then, that "logical and intelligent" people can't want to stick with D&D 3.5, or "illogical and unintelligent" people can't say YES to 4.0?

I will say yes to the SRD and then wait for my DM to decide what he wants to do with it, because it'll be his problem once it comes out.

Of course I'm positive to a 4.0 edition sooner rather than later. Look at what the Saga Edition did for Star Wars, vastly improved. I'm expecting similar and more for Dungeons & Dragons. :)

Is it compatible with 3.5? If yes then sure I'll say yes to 4.0.

Just how compatible 4.0 is with 3.5 is the key.

Just as an example, I was thinking of buying Complete Scoundrel just today. But if 4.0 is going to make everything in it not fit any more than I might as well just save my money. The article on the main page about classes didn't help any.

In any case, I'm going to remain optimistic for the time being.

I'm cautiously optimistic. 3.5 was exactly that, a "little bit" of an update. I am ready for a whole new edition, if it's better.

I love the idea of streamlined rules. It's a cliché that everyone hates grapple, but it's a well-earned one. The tools application also a ton of potential. As a DM, I'm very happy about new statblocks, pdfs (or whatever they are), and especially, the idea that high level play will be just as fun as low-level. It's always been a flawed system that the basic goal is to gain levels, but the more successful that is, the slower and more awkward gameplay becomes.

Despite the money and time I've spent on 3.0 and 3.5, if 4e delivers on its promise of a smoother, slicker, and simply more fun experience, then I'm all for it.

I do worry a little, though. My first thought on watching the presentation on YouTube was, "4e is the unholy bastard child of a Facebook + World of Warcraft marketing pitch." In other words, I hope that all the buzzwords and tools are meaningful, and not just hype. If I wanted to play WoW, I would.

I want D&D to be relevant, but I'm also passionate about what it is at its core, no matter what the edition, exact system, or campaign setting is.

Oh, and I hate that the DMG is coming out two months after the PHB. Seriously? Please rethink this. They're the core books for a reason, the foundation that's needed to play a game. So why make us wait two months to play? It's pointless and punitive.

All in all, I thought I had recently jumped the Wizards ship for good, for Paizo, who release fewer products of often higher quality. This could turn things around, though. Just my 2 pennies.

Unfortunately, I don't think they'll be asking Rodney Thompson and Gary Sarli to help give 4e a "SAGA" boost.

It's entertainment guys and girls. They do the work, and if you like what you see on the previews, you pay the nice people. Personally I don't mind paying the price of a couple of movie tickets (me and three kids works out to a fair bit) in return for the memories the game's given me.

That's nothing, I haven't bought videogame consoles since 2000. And in the past 7 years, I only bought three computer games: Civ3, Morrowind, and KOTOR.

THAT's how I'm committed to PnP RPGs. So there!

Signed... do the evolution baby. So far, in my experience, new editions mean better games. Right now, I'm not even willing to play 3.5 anymore. Saga has spoiled me, and I can't bring myself to play anything else (even Modern, which in fact spoiled me off D&D in the first place). If 4.0 gives the breath of fresh air to D&D that I think it will, more power to it. Viva le revolution!

Newcomer to the message boards here...just thought I'd post here in the pro-4E area. I've read the Hallelujah thread and the Doomsday thread in their entirety, and I've made up my mind. I'm feeling both excited and cautious about 4E, but all in all, can't wait to see how they handle it.

So, how many people here have seen the YouTube videos?

I'm also curious to hear from people who've played Saga Edition. What do you think about it?

Ditto - I can't stand how inflexible the 3.5 class system is.
Saga's changes to the class system are just what the doctor ordered, and I can't wait to get my hands on the 4e core books.

I will wait and see if I will buy it. I WILL say yes to it coming into existence. It does seem that there will be enough preview material before its released that I'll know whether I want to buy it by the time it comes out.

There's no reason for people to complain about it being there. It's not as if 2nd, 3rd, and 3.5 books will all suddenly vanish from existance upon the launch date. So if someone likes an older version better, they're certainly welcome to use it. Personally, I'm encouraged by much of what's been said about 4th edition. I probably won't like everything, but they're no problem giving players and gamemasters options as far as both book and digital version of source material.
