I know this has been done a lot.

Now i'm doing it to but I have already have stats for monsters.

I'm useing classes from dnd. Along with spells and prestige classes.
But i'm making my own races so please contribute ideas on races.

Well, the swords are wierd, they seem to increase in damage gradually. So heres my idea.
Wooden Sword 1d4 damage, -4 attack, slashing, treat as improvised weapon.
Kokiri Sword. 1d6 damage, small, slashing, treat as small longsword.
Ornull Sword. 1d8 damage, medium, slashing, treat as longsword
Various Decent Swords. 1d8 damage, medium, masterwork longsword
Master Sword. 1d8+3 damage, +2d6 damage on evil. +3 holy longsword
Biggorons Sword. 2d6 damage, Masterwork Greatsword

Hookshot. Ranged touch attack, treat as bull rush, except they are drawn in.
Bomb. 1d12 fire damage, 5ft range increment, splash 1d4. Explodes in 2 rounds.

I like the master sword, hookshot, biggoron sword, and bombs.

But the other swords aren't needed. we could use the swords in dnd and if wooded just decrese damage dice 1 step.

Thanks for the stats.

I don't like useing the holy avenger stats for the master sword. Because then only paladins could use it to its full power and link is not a paladin.

And the bombs in DMG only hit that 1 space.

:whatsthis Hero chosen by the gods, wields magic sword usable only by such heroes, and can summon a warhorse? Sounds like a paladin to me.

I agree that Link seems more skilled than the average paladin, but I wouldn't make him a fighter. Since both classes are pretty underpowered, I add fighter bonus feats to the paladin class (starting at 4th level) - this would be perfect for Link.

Some people give Link bard levels, but he plays a friggin' major artifact!

1. He can't do magic.

1. Use the martial paladin variant, or change the flavour. Bull's strength doesn't have to have an incantation, just "I will not give in!" - spells which grant bonuses don't have to look magical. Oh, and Link cast spells in Zelda 2.

2. So give him the feats - do what I do (above).

I would also use the variant that trades remove disease for remove curse (expend two uses for break enchantment).

Remember that not all of the Zelda games had the same Link in them. Also keep in mind that you got to choose his name in each of the games. This basically means that:

Hyrule has had more than one green-tunic-wearing hero.
It isn't really true that eah of those green-tunic-wearing heroes were named Link.
I have thought way too much about this kind of thing.

It is dumb because in D&D there are multible classes that can use magic and in the legend of zelda there is only one. So you have to be that class to use magic.

It is dumb because in D&D there are multible classes that can use magic and in the legend of zelda there is only one. So you have to be that class to use magic.

I believe that the reason that D&D had multiple classes that could use magic was because in the beginning, they didn't allow the characters to multiclass freely. If you took a level of fighter and then took a level in wizard, you would no longer be able to take levels in fighter. With the non-human races, you could gain levels in multiple classes simultaneously, but the options you got were limited. People wanted to combine classes into one so that they could have fighters with holy spells and thieves with druid spells or a cleric with a few of the wizard spells. This is how I remember it working in second edition.

With D&D as it is now, I think it's silly to have to have multiple spellcasting classes. It would make having levels in different ones very confusing when you have to keep track of different spell lists and how many spells per day of each level you would get in each one. You also have to figure out your caster level and with lots of multiclassing, that can end up being rather complicated.

If anything, I think that the way magic is being handled in Zelda D20 is simpler. Your caster level is equal to your wizzrobe level, you get only one spell list, you get magic points that can be used towards casting any of the spells you've got, you don't have to go through the trouble of picking out each and every spell ahead of time, you don't need to be afraid of multiclassing between the different classes.

If you want to make something like a paladin with ZD20, just multiclass between warrior and wizzrobe. You'll even be able to decide for yourself how much of each it will be. If you think that he needs to be a little better at combat than a paladin, just focus a little more on gaining levels in warrior. If you want him to be better at healing than a paladin, just focus more on gaining wizzrobe levels.

For one reason or another, D&D players just don't want to multiclass. If they want a ninja, they'll ask for a ninja class instead of multiclassing between monk and rogue. ZD20 has taken a step towards encouraging multiclassing by having only one spellcasting class. They are able to focus on each class simply being the best at what it was meant to be the best at instead of having classes that try to be slightly competent at something another class is supposed to focus on.
yoh

07-30-07, 10:29 AM
I see your point but I have a question.

In the wizzrobe class it says every level you gain 2 spells.
If you multiclass do gain those spells every level or is it only when you level up in the wizzrobe class.

Link is a paladin. He wields a weapon with the title of "Evil's Bane", has a mount, is considered to be a hero (Chosen Hero, Hero of Time...), is a chosen hero by the gods, and is always battling evil.

I go the same route as mentioned above, I just mesh together the fighter and the Paladin, alot simpler and alot better of a class if you ask me. As for Link, he also dips a bit into Wizzrobe a bit if you ask me, though its not really a big deal. Though TWP Link is a pure Paladin all the way.:)

Agreed, Link packs Pally levels. If he needs more feats, then give him some fighter levels.

Frankly, I can see an excuse to throw on a ranger level or three too.

Heck, with the way he learns to play songs in less than a minute, I can easily accept him having at least a single level of bard.

Lastly, he needs some Iaijutsu focus in there to complete him. Anyone who's played Twilight Princess should know what I mean.

Well, Bard doesn't have to go in, likely a performance skill or something can take that up, he does only know a few songs, most though are magical, its not too far fetched.

And yeah, I'm putting together a Link (TWP) build now, I'm thinking 10 levels in fighter and 10 in Paladin. He has ten levels from before he became the Hero of Legend, and he gains the paladin levels when he gains the new outfit. This way we can pin his fighter levels down to the swordsmith training him and Link just taking the fighter levels. Afterwards, he begins to take Paladin levels. Not so sure what to do about the Secret Skills, but I suppose I can put them down as special feats. They are supposed to be secret after all (so of course everyone knows about it).

I already did most of Ganondorfs, I put him as a Battle Sorcerer 7/ Eldritch Knight 10/ Blackguard 5.:)

Paladin works because: He has a special mount, he can use a special sword (master sword is the equivalent of a stronger holy avenger), he has a little weak magic(stronger in a few games) and he is probably lawful good in about half of the games.

Games where Link didn't have a special mount: The Legend of Zelda, The Adventure of Link, A Link to the Past, Link's Awakening, The Wind Waker, The Minish Cap

How does the use of a special sword make him a paladin?

He could have magic from being a ranger or multiclassing. Didn't most of the magic he used come from Use Magic Device skill checks or something? I remember most of his magic being in the form of magical items with only one game where he actually casts spells.

If he is Lawful Good in about half of the games, then that would mean that he's not in the other half right? Paladins can ONLY be Lawful Good. So according to that last statement of yours, it can be assumed that he couldn't be a paladin in about half of the games. It's also possible to have a lawful good alignment without being a paladin.

The Master Sword is almost universally known as "The Blade of Evil's Bane". In Twilight Princess, it is referred to as "the blade that evil cannot touch". While not a holy avenger, it's definitely a Lawful Good weapon.

Link as a spellcaster? Heh, only in Zelda 2, he's an Eldritch Knight in that one (very heavy spellcasting for a sidescroller fighting game). In ALttP, he's definitely a Fighter. He's easily a ranger or fighter/druid (or maaaybe a paladin, paladins don't get to use the spell trigger items druids do) in Ocarina of Time.

The problem is that Link really shouldn't be a paladin because he doesn't fight fairly some of the time. Take into example Twilight Princess, (SMALL SPOILER!!! LOOK AWAY NOW!!!!)

the part where Link gets into that deserted town swarmed with all the goblin-like things, the ideal strategy at that part is to snipe them at a distance whitch is against the paladin's code of conduct. And that's just one example.

Taking out a horde of enemies one-by-one is not against the paladin's code of conduct. Associating with characters who consistently offend one's moral code, which Midna does quite often, is against the paladin's code of conduct.

I think he was talking about taking them out by using what might as well be ranged sneak attacks.

As some of you may remember from Wind Waker, you got the chance to do a special attack that had Link tumble behind the enemy and do an upward slash of some kind to the enemy's back. Now I admit that I don't know much of the specifics of the Paladin Code of Conduct besides the "act with honor" part, but I'm sure that hitting someone in the back is not normally seen as honorable. I also have a feeling that sneaking around in a barrel would be seen as dishonorable.

I also remember reading that it's possible to shoplift in Link's Awakening. I KNOW that shoplifting is against the Paladin Code of Conduct.

I'm also sure that attacking chickens until they summon an army of chickens to attack you is against the Paladin Code of Conduct too.

Taking that room at the inn from the goron in Majora's Mask would also have to be against the Paladin Code of Conduct.

... Ok, for those of you with loose morals, lemmie explain something.

You don't HAVE to do that stuff. Don't blame Link because you have sticky fingers when you play wind waker.

I agree that not all Links (as there's been nearly a dozen by now) are Pallies, but a few of them MUST HAVE BEEN, given how the games play out.

Ocarina of Time is one on my 'for sure' list. Twilight Princess is a good maybe, but as Midna doesn't actually COMMIT any evil deeds that I can recall (heck, she busts you out of prison at one point, remember?) you're gonna have to point out these 'offenses of moral code' for me.

Officially story wise, a lot of Links were probably Pallies, I dunno... Somebody e-mail Nintendo and ask to speak to the producer or something.

For now, whirlwind attack? Holy sword? Summoning a mount? OoT's Link is a Fighter/Paladin in my book.

How is using an attack dishonorable? All that is is a dodge followed with an attack. They know you are there, its not dishonorable. Unless of course stabbing is dishonorable, because it can be harder to block than a slash. As for sneaking around in a barrel, it might be dishonorable, but it was kind of the only way.

Actually, the whole point of the back attack in the games is to break or circumvent your opponent's armor, typically in a case where your opponent's armor makes him invulnerable. It's a case of fighting smart, not fighting dirty.

Holly, I'd say that Link is not the same character throughout the series. His abilities differ too greatly, even if his general disposition remains the same. Shoehorning Link into a single D&D class is just a good way to cause headaches.

I'd like to point out that in TP, the Master Sword apparently "chose" Link as its wielder, much to Midna's astonishment. Hmm... a holy weapon normal people can't wield (which can dispel magic)? PALADIN.
Midna is possibly neutral evil before the start of the game, but gradually shifts to neutral good, with a large alignment jump half-way through the game

Of course it's not the same Link in all the games - they're set hundreds of years apart.

I would stat TP's "Hero Spirit" as a deathless fighter with some SLAs, by the way.

I think Link would usually be a ranger with the archery combat style. He always seems to get a bow in the games. He gets evasion. He tends to use light armor (a tunic) most of the time. Move silently would be a class skill (how would he sneak past moblins in a barrel without it?).

Oh, and for those who are trying to say that the Master Sword is a Holy Avenger, let's look at a few facts. The Master Sword seems to have no power to provide the spell resistance that the Holy Avenger does. If it did provide spell resistance, it might be able to keep Link from turning into a wolf in TP. If it gave spell resistance, it would keep Link from polymorphing into the bunny in LttP. If it gave spell resistance, it would probably show more spell reflecting ability than an ordinary butterfly net (LttP) or empty bottle (WW I think). If it gave spell resistance, it would probably make a difference in whether Link was holding the Master Sword or the Big Goron's Sword whenever Ganondorf's spells hit him (not whenever Ganondorf trys to get his spells to hit).

Most of the magic you've described would be deity-level. Turning into a rabbit is a planar trait - SR doesn't let you survive the Elemental Plane of Fire. Ganondorf is undoubtedly a demigod in TP, and there are many ways to overcome Spell Resistance, such as the archmage's arcane fire ability.

Not to mention Ganondorf works pretty well as a warlock. We know he has eldritch blast, and that invocation that lets you fly. Also, Maybe you could use d20 modern classes, at least to begin with, D&D classes would become advanced(aka Prestige) classes. So link is a Fast hero 9, Strong Hero 3, Tough Hero 1. Ganondorf Would Be Strong Hero 7, Tough Hero 3, Warlock 6. Give the mastersword the ability to deflect ranged attacks(including touch) and you should be fine. Maybe that could replace spell resistance. It would also work with the biggoron sword, because biggoron is a master smith.

If there is one thing I'm sure of, it's that the Master Sword's ability to deflect attacks wasn't exclusive to it. Back when they first had the whole "beat the boss by deflecting the magic ball back at him" in Link to the Past, there were two ways to do it. You could hit the magic with the sword, or you could hit it with the butterfly net. Would you suggest giving a butterfly net the ability to deflect ranged attacks?

The deflecting the spell thing would probably just apply to that particular spell (explaining why Ganondorf is able to deflect it back).

This isn't precise conversion you know. It's 'what if 'LoZ was a DnD camaign, and not a videogame' kind of question.

Again, in my opinion, OoT Link is a pally/fighter/ranger/bard. I do think that TP Link may have a few levels of rogue, since I don't have access to OA. And a few levels from Bo9S sounds just about right on the money to me.

Why flick of the wrist? Get rid of the Spells in special attacks, and give him Divine Grace. Besides that not bad, not bad at all.

Get rid of spells? You mean use the martial paladin variant? Flick of the Wrist is for TP's Mortal Draw skill.

Do u see him casting spells of his accord, no.

For Flick of the Wrist, sorry, I thought that only worked on thrown weapons.

In Ocarina of time he casts spells, there is a nice defensive one(immune to damage, but you are asking to get bullrushed off a cliff) a sweet fire spell(cast fireball on yourself, assuming you are immune) and a teleport spell(I'm going with teleport here).

I believe that he needed magic items to use those effects.

Yes he did. They were magic items given to you by Zelda (I think) from the Goddesses.

Well, fairies and godesses could easily grant Link SLAs with epic spells. Could anyone stat one to grant Fire and Ice arrows permanently?

Now that everyone is done about link.

I would still like ideas on races and magic items.

But please don't turn this into a fight about what class Link is.

Link is a wizard!</sarc>

For Gorons, look at goliaths or feral garguns, perhaps with the mineral warrior (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20031003e) template.

Zoras... there's plenty of aquatic races already - tritons or locathatas probably work. Their bird-people descendants could be raptorans.

Kokiri are halflings, though I can't think of what the Koroks would be (Tiny woodling halflings?)

Gerudo would probably be a human subrace - Sandstorm and Races of Destiny would probably be good resources here.

The Picori... pick a fey, any fey.

We haven't really seen enough of what the Twili can do to stat them - both humans and Twili transform into identical "Twilit Messengers" (the screaming things with head crests); it isn't entirely clear whether the Twili were originally human or Gerudo (Ganondorf implies they were human, but the lack of Gerudo in Hyrule (except for two characters with Gerudo blood - you know the ones) suggests otherwise).

Thank you I looked at the mineral warrior template and I think it makes a lot of sense.
I was already thinking of using halfling for Kokiri.

Thank you for contributing. All of the races make a lot of sense.

Well, there's always the races section at http://z12.invisionfree.com/Zelda_RPG/index.php?act=idx. It shouldn't be that difficult to get it converted into something that would fit perfectly into D&D rules.

Yoh, you will find a lot of information on the Legend of Zelda RPG Forums (http://s12.invisionfree.com/Zelda_RPG) that will help you. Feel free to come on over and contribute some of your ideas, rather than rehashing stuff that lots of people have already done before.

The aspect system comes from Ocarina of Time, what was the new game at the time when the Legend of Zelda RPG was initially being developed. There was a big discussion over this system, because it was something that tied the system and setting quite firmly into that one game, and as such represented a big risk for us. We did not know at the time that Nintendo intended to release Wind Waker and introduce the aspects of Earth and Air/Wind.

Originally, we decided that the aspects seen in OoT would be incorporated, because we felt they tied in nicely with the mythology and cosmology of the Legend of Zelda mythos. There was synergy between the aspects, the Goddesses, and the three parts of the Triforce. When Wind Waker came out, we discussed the aspect system again, and decided it would stay as it was regardless of the Wind Waker's introduction of the aspects of Earth and Air/Wind. Instead, we found that as we'd already ben discussing the prospect of the Triumverate of Elements and the Triumverate of Spirit, that these seemed to match up to the aspects of Earth and Air/Wind quite nicely. These Triumverates come from the fact that each Goddess/Triforce controls two aspects, and thus it is possibe to group the aspects into two sets of three. Given the importance of 'three' in the mythology, we felt this was much more useful, and provided a lot more flavour, and this thinking has helped us to establish consistant themes for the aspects and cosmlogy throughout the setting.

As for the magic system itself, this is actually broken down into a number of factors, some of which may actually change how your regard the magic systemof the setting:

1) Base classes are designed to be broad, not specific, with lots of room for customisation within. There is only one spellcasting base class, because the system only needs one class. Wizzrobes can be remarkably different depending upon the aspects they take. This versatility has been maximised by allowing wizzrobes to choose which aspects they wish to take, and the power they have with them. A wizzrobe can become a speciaist in a single aspect, combine two or three aspects, or even dabble in all six aspects if they wish. This means you can create any primary spellcasting class from D&D with this one class, and my multiclassing, create any spellcasting D&D class with a few levels of wizzrobe.

2) Only spellcasting is restricted to Wizzrobes. This is a very important distinction, but all classes gain access to a latent pool within which they can place MP. This pool represents a character's inate life force or magic, and allows them to use all sorts of abilities. The '#/day' format has been replaced by latent MP, allowing more versatility of characters to be heroic and use 'magic' even when the ability itself doesn't seem magical. This is not to say that all characters can sling fireballs and summon monsters - but they can do their own things, in their own ways. This is because we take an 'effect-based' approach where spellcasting is simply one means of generating any specific effect. Spellcasting IS versatile - a fire Wizzrobe with the right spells will always be able to spend MP to generate fire. Other characters can use equipment for the same effect. Want to blow stuff up - the fire wizzrobe can do that, but so can the artisan with the Demolitions skill, or a character who can use bombs. Want to use that item or feat which requires fire MP? Take the Fire Talent feat - anybody can take this feat to gain access to the fire aspect pool, and thus access to fire MP, but not the ability to cast spells.

3) Magic is a lot less powerful in the Legend of Zelda RPG, and a lot less of a requirement in the system. Caster Levels have been significanty reduced, because each aspect also has their own caster level now, so not all fire-wizzrobes are created equal. The realistic upper limit for Caster Level is 15, resulting in significant reductions in power and effect. Magic is useful, but it is not a neccessity - thus the reliance on the spellcasting, and thus the wizzrobe base class is significantly reduced. Wizzrobes are still popular, because magic is still popular, especially in fantasy settings. However, this is due to player choice, more than anything.

The Legend of Zelda RPG is not designed to be Zelda D&D. It never was. This is because the games themselves have a lot in them that are not D&D, and we've tried to portray this just as much. However, we are more than aware that people like to play hybrid games - so we've kept in mind how these two systems can integrate.

We've plenty of advice over that forums, and we'd appreciate your input and feedback. Why go to all the hard work of recreating everything yourself when it has already beend done - extensively - over the past SEVEN YEARS! When you dismiss the Legend of Zelda RPG because you don't like this or that, you are effectively 'throwing the baby out with the bath water' as the saying goes. Instead, why not come up with ideas on how to integrate the Legend of Zelda RPG into your hybrid games, and share with others how you did it.

For example, if you truly do not like the magic system, then it is fairly easy to convert this part of the system back into D&D. Conversely, maybe you want to add the Legend of Zelda RPG's magic system to your standard D&D games. That's fairly easy too. The entire Legend of Zelda RPG system is designed to be easily convertable in this manner.

So please, why not share your thoughts on the Legend of Zelda RPG Forums (http://s12.invisionfree.com/Zelda_RPG)?

Being "chosen by the gods" doesn't automatically make someone a paladin or a priest. In the Dragonlance Chronicles, Raistlin was chosen by the gods to help end the Dark Queen's plans, but nobody considers him a paladin of Paladine.

Trying to assign stats, or even classes, to Link is rather pointless. Only a few of the games share the same Link, and there are differences between the various Links. For example, some can use magical spells, and some cannot.

In DL, since magic comes from the gods, all wizards are basically clerics of magic gods. It is for this reason it is noted that the gods of magic do not have clerics or paladins - they have wizards instead.

It's hard to be 'chosen of the gods' in a setting without religion. The various versions of the mythos debate whether the goddesses still exist, although they all agree that the goddesses DID exist at one point. For the Legend of Zelda Roleplaying Game (http://z12.invisionfree.com/Zelda_RPG/index.php?act=idx) we've taken the stance that the goddesses don't exist as anything more than local spirits (allowing GMs the option of whether they are important to the campaign), with the most powerful such spirit being the Triforce (which was created by the goddesses and took up most of theor strength). Fundamentally, the Triforce is important to the campaign.

Evidence from the games themselves indicates that Link is the chosen of the Triforce, pretty much as the avatar of courage. This could justify paladin in D&D, but given the approach of the Legend of Zelda RPG, we're actually giving all Guardian Spirits a specialised PrC for dedicated followers, and the one for the Triforce will be the Hero of Time.

There are some important issues about using Link in your games. Firstly, Link represents the player (in most cases) and as such takes the role that the PCs would take in any normal Legend of Zelda-based campaign. Thus, to include Link often means to exclude the PCs, unless Link is limited to a cameo role.

The Legend of Zelda Roleplaying Game (http://z12.invisionfree.com/Zelda_RPG/index.php?act=idx) is set at the end of our interpretation of the timeline, in which Ganon has been defeated (see Oracles) and Link has returned from Koholint Island (see Link's Awakening) with a profound epithany: Darkness is no longer represented by a single figure, but spread out throughout the land, and one Hero cannot defeat it alone. Thus, Link's current goal as the Hero of Time is to seek out other Heroes to help him. This makes Link more of a mentor than a hero, letting the PCs have the adventures instead.

Secondly, the different abilities that Link displays during the games only show what Link can do, not what he cannot do. Thus, we know Link can fight, use items, play the ocarina, and cast spells. In D&D terms, this would make him a bard, largely because of the class' versatility. However, given the importance of combat (and the background of Link as a Knight of Hyrule) I would suggest multiclassing as a fighter or even paladin would be wise. Note that the Legend of Zelda was not designed using the D&D rules set, so it may be justified to waive the requirements for either Bard or Paladin (or both) in Link's case, so that he can take both classes without penalty. Link is more Neutral Good than Lawful Good, so this alignment and class combination is apt. As for race, either Human or Half-Elf would be appropriate, as these are closest to hylians in theme, and both allow any favoured class, so Link won't have a multiclassing penalty for his paladin/bard class combination.

In the Legend of Zelda Roleplaying Game (http://z12.invisionfree.com/Zelda_RPG/index.php?act=idx), Link is a hylian (http://z12.invisionfree.com/Zelda_RPG/index.php?showtopic=405) warrior (http://z12.invisionfree.com/Zelda_RPG/index.php?showtopic=428)/wanderer (http://z12.invisionfree.com/Zelda_RPG/index.php?showtopic=427) - with the Perform (wind) (http://z12.invisionfree.com/Zelda_RPG/index.php?showtopic=536) and Use Magical Device (http://z12.invisionfree.com/Zelda_RPG/index.php?showtopic=643) skills from the wanderer's versatility class feature. This essentially covers all the bases for Link.

It is worth noting that D&D is built for team play, where as the player only controls a single character in the video games, so any competent approach at converting the games to D&D adventures should take into account that it will feature a party of PCs, and not just one character. Thus, while Link would have to cover all the bases, individual PCs do not. Otherwise, you risk sidelining other characters during such adventures.

Another reason Link cannot be a paladin; Eating your ennemies' hearts to heal yourself is pretty much against the Paladin's Code.:D
