There's no incentive for the nearly ubiquitous "duels" in gameplay. So I introduce the following potential house rules: SHONEN BONUS Any time a player is involved in a fight, he can choose to have his PC face off against a single villain in a duel. That PC can use the difference in levels between the character and the opponent as a bonus to hit and damage. Example: Ichi-doh, a 5th level Soul Reaper, is facing off against Captain Deathblade, a 10th level Soul Reaper. It is in Ichi's interest to keep his ally, Flower Princess Xao (a 5th level Summoner), out of the fight. If she joins, he loses the bonus. If she stays out of it, he can add +5 to his attack roll and damage rolls. SAILOR SCOUT COMPLICATION: If a group of PCs are designed to fight as a team (re: Sailor Scouts or the Bubblegum Squad, etc), then they can choose the following optional rule: The characters can add one character for every difference in levels, without affecting the bonus: Example: the 4 Middle-Aged Samurai Sewer Rats are all level 5. They fight the Chomper, a Level 10 villain. Since 10-5 = five, all four of them can fight at +5. In this case, the highest level member of the team determines the bonus for all teammates (If Brughel, the toughest Sewer Rat is now level 6, then the rest can only add +4.) If the characters have chosen to fight as a team, however, then they get a -1 for each member that is missing (for example, if Brughel (6) now faces off against Chopper (10) alone, then he only gets a +1, because his +4 bonus is affected by -3 for not having the other Sewer Rats in the fight. It's suggested that taking a level of the "Sentai Member" class (or whatever your local variant is called) in BESM d20 will determine if the characters can fight together. For example, the heroes of Bleach are not teammates, even though they are clearly allies, all on the same side, and the cat keeps urging them to work together. |
