anyone tried this? it would be interesting work, since every other nation has a companion type diety system running....

I was wondering the same thing as I checked the boards (first time around). Lackey has a very strict policy about what can be used of her work (No MUSHs for example, no matter how much we whine and beg), but I guess creating a d20 system would fall in the Private Use arena.

I also seem to not have answered your question, hehe. I wouldn't mind putting in some work into a proyect like this though, would be interesting.

well, really, if we are doing this for the hell of it, with no intention for publication or profit, I'd find it hard for anyone to mind. but then, people are people.

as i see it, this would be how it would turn out.
Heralds: G (generally. i'd say any form of good, as heralds are a notoriously odd lot) paladin derivation, with psionic instead of divine magic.
Herald Mage's: Once more, NG paladin derivation, with arcane magic
Bard's: This class is really the same, with the exception that most of their gifts are psionic. but it's not much of a difference to have to worry about changing it.
Healers: I'm not big into psionics, but as I've said, most gifts act that way. is there a pre-established psionic healer?
Sun God Priests: Clerics, with the improved familiar ability. (i believe they got cats?)
Tolenedra Healer-Adept: The second type of non standard mage. hard to explain these ones, since while they make a distinction, its fuzzy. I'm sure unearthed arcana or some other supplement would help cover it.
---Side note, tolenedra as a race would prolly be that of elven, preferred class sorc, with a bird as it's familiar.
Blood-Mage: third non-standard mage. i believe oriental adventures had something of the sort. not sure.

magic of course act differently, with the ley-lines, nodes, and heartstones to account for. most magic appears sorcerous, though there are spells mentioned from time to time.
and of course, griffon's would have to be a playable race as well. a drastically rewritten one anyway. just a lot of work really.

I actually ran Valdemar as a planar jaunt, so that psionics were improved but regular magic and clerical magic were inhibited.

I think that you would have to include the bizarre transformations that are inflicted upon people by that lynx-wizard guy.

Also the companions themselves are I believe actually reincarnations are they not?

they contemplate that, but no one ever confirms it. so we can't tell. the things the lynx wizard did is essentially a polymorph effect where he is subtley changing things. so that wouldnt be to hard to work out.

Actually, it is confirmed. Princess Elspeth's Companion (forget the name, books back at home) has a slip of the 'tongue' and says Savil instead of Sayvil when talking about Kerrowyn's Companion, which is Vanyel's Aunt. And I think there's a book where it's even clearer. I think the only Companions that are not Heralds reincarnate are the Grove-borns.

Anyways, back on track. I haven't played around with Psionics, but it is stated in the books that the Herald's control over their Gifts is superior to most anything seen. Magic is generally much stronger and versatile...but it also leaves tracks.

There are so many variations on the use of magic as well...and I'm sick and will shut up. Back later with actual ideas I hope.

The Companions and the Firecats are very specifically revealed to be reincarnations.

Once in the Winds trilogy (based around Elspeth) when she's speaking to Vanyel's ghost and he says heralds are given three choices - become a companion, become a new herald trainee, or go to the havens to rest.

Then it's done again in the Mage Storms trilogy (based around Karal), when his mentor comments on the fact that there's less firecats because there's fewer dead Sons of the Sun than Heralds.

My 2 coppers.

2 cp well spent. now, do we seriously want to do this? or just leave it a flight of fancy.

Ahh...I'd forgotten those Lyrebyrd...I was really sick that day, hehe.
And I wouldn't mind putting the effort into something like this. If someone else is up to it I'm in, because I really have no idea where to begin.

Yay! As I have nop clue where to begin either. So i suppose we study the psionics handbook, and the book with all the alternate paladin builds? Then begin altering the paladin's special mount, and some of the familair feats to enable the Firecats, and the Bond Birds.

I imagine bondbirds would function much like familiars and animal companions, since the Tayledras that do fighting seem to come as either rangers, sorcerers, or sorcerer-cleric multi-class in the case of Healing-adepts.

I did this using a variation from D6 Star Wars from West End Games. I even ran a couple of games at Norwescon in Seattle. In all these games I ran, the party comprised Heralds with their Companions. So I think the best thing to do for a Heralds Game would be to have the party be half Heralds and half Companions.

For D20, then, most Heralds and Companions would be at least 5th level. I'd also use D20 Modern for most of this because it would be easy to make the variety that is a Herald.

For example, Skiff would be a Fast Hero while Talia would be a Dedicated Hero/Charismatic Hero. Alberich would be a Strong Hero/Tough Hero and Dirk would be a Smart Hero. I'd add on the Gifts and the Truthspell as additional Feats.

I have also heard that Blue Rose (Green Ronin) would be able to do a Herald campaign with little problem, but I don't have the game so I don't know.

That's all I can come up with on the fly . . .:P
