| ZenZ07-21-07, 03:20 PM | Monte Cook is writing a d20 version of the WoD setting by White Wolf. This can only be GREAT! I just hope he is able to squeeze in all the classic WoD beings (Vampires, Werewolves, Magi, Changlings, and Ghosts). |
| Prak, the Mad07-22-07, 04:25 PM | edit: actually, I just took a look, apparently it is d20... it seems there are only going to be werewolves, vampires, demons, mages, awakened ones and humans, at least until they know whether the project will be successful... for more info, take a look on the white wolf (www.white-wolf.com) website... |
| ZenZ07-23-07, 03:10 PM | I did hunt around a little and what I saw leaned toward d20. I would be sadly disappointed if it was a Storyteller system game as I find the rules to be difficult and open ended. |
| Thakowsaizmu07-23-07, 06:49 PM | I'm sad now. |
| ZenZ07-24-07, 03:07 PM | Sad because Monte is doing it? Sad because it is d20? Sad because you don't like the concept? The Storyteller system for WoD is not going away. This is supposed to be a one shot stand alone game. Monte always delivers some great ideas so I'm certain that while it might not be a must have item for everyone it will be fun and unique. |
| Viatos07-26-07, 01:20 AM | You have no idea how upset the people on the WoD boards are about this, they hate you guys, and everything D20 is. :-P Eh, the only reason I'm interested at all is I hate rolling six or seven d10s every time I need to do something. I find the ST system pwns for roleplaying purposes in every way but that single inconvenience; D20 is a lot better if you want to be killing stuff all the time and doing epic things. The ST system (I don't know how you found it difficult) is really streamlined, and this is mostly to force more focus on character. You can make a Str 18 Fighter in DnD and play it practically without a name (yes, fighters suck, EXAMPLE KAY). In WoD, that just isn't viable. If all you are is a combat engine, you're going to spend a very large amount of your time following the private investigator's gopher instructions, who shoots well enough to get the job done anyway, without your zomg 11-dice pool against multiple targets. What I'm kind of hoping for is Cook choosing the oWoD feel over the nWoD; it's a lot more epic and better suited to D20, and the only thing in nWoD I like at all is the mortal campaign, sometimes templated. The supernaturals in N just don't do it for me. Another note is, it's not as D20 as you're hoping. Think Unearthed Arcana as opposed to 3.5 core. I've heard they're dropping the spell system altogether, although I can't confirm that because I'm not following the teasers or anything. Another note is, D20 horror just does not work. :-\ It's a hazard of a system so inherently bent towards cool powers, heavy fighting, and of course the treasure-laden dungeon crawl. Those things ARE (can be, in the case of the fighting) in WoD, frequently enough, just...I don't know, even Awakened magic feels more...vulnerable, somehow, then a Wizard. Werewolves seem less combat-y then Barbarians. A final note: Unless I missed something, Awakened ones and mages are the same thing. A mage goes through an Awakening and receives his power. And I might sound like a D20 detractor. I'm not, I love D20, and I think oWoD d20 would be absotively kickass...just not nWoD, or horror-centric WoD period, D20. |
| Thakowsaizmu07-26-07, 02:48 AM | Sad because Monte is doing it? No, he is fairly good. Sad because it is d20? Yes, very much so. Although I am sure I'll look at it. Sad because you don't like the concept? Indeed. I love D&D and the D20 system, but I also like having more than one system to play with. I don't like that everything is becoming D20. This whole WoD turned D20 thing has been a fear for many people for a long time. Infact people thought the rerelease of DA:V was going to be d20. Thankfully it wasn't. The Storyteller system for WoD is not going away. This is supposed to be a one shot stand alone game. Monte always delivers some great ideas so I'm certain that while it might not be a must have item for everyone it will be fun and unique. The Stroytelling System may as well be going though, WW really shot themselves in the foot with nWoD. |
| ZenZ07-26-07, 03:04 PM | The problems I had with the WoD system was that must constantly remember how many dice to remove and how many are considered penalties. Then at the end only one success wins the day! Trust me the original magic system for Changeling was a nightmare. I had a player 'move' a snow storm over Lake Michigan so they could drive home with little or no problems. I found it difficult to teach and as the GM I had the only rule books. I think even a variant d20 WoD setting would be fine. Monte knows his stuff and I'm sure it will be balanced a fun. Yeah, storyteller/ WoD fans hate d20. They liked it when it first came out but now just rail on it. Of course I have yet to play in a WoD setting by a huge fan that did not S_u_c_k. |
| Prak, the Mad07-29-07, 05:41 PM | You have no idea how upset the people on the WoD boards are about this, they hate you guys, and everything D20 is. :-P yeah, well, screw them... what do they happen to think of people who play both d20 and storyteller? I gotta tell ya, NWoD sucks, I stick with OWoD, though NWoD has it's uses(would be good for a Sin City game, and I like promethians) |
| ZenZ07-30-07, 01:31 AM | I love how certain gamers consider themselves and the system they favor better than the rest! It's like gearheads and Ford vs. Chevy! |
| Ezram07-30-07, 03:54 AM | Another note is, D20 horror just does not work. :-\ This board has disproven that statement. Many times over I might add. I love how certain gamers consider themselves and the system they favor better than the rest! It's like gearheads and Ford vs. Chevy! I agree, elitism is a sad division within gamers, and geeks in general. Nintendo vs Sony Star Trek vs Star Wars White Wolf vs D&D etc... |
| captainvegas07-30-07, 01:31 PM | I agree, elitism is a sad division within gamers, and geeks in general. Nintendo vs Sony Star Trek vs Star Wars White Wolf vs D&D etc... With all the crap we get from non-gamers, we should stick together ! Besides, Sony is WAY better then Nintendo :D I've tried to point out on the WW forums that you CAN indeed roleplay with a D20 based system. That a D20 WoD version can only help bring more people to thier game. I started WW games because of the GURPS version. It was an easy starting point - especially at a time where you couldn't just hop on the forums and find out what books were needed to start. 'gasp' Pre-Internet days, yikes, gives me shivers just thinking about it. They kinda laughed at me, and sort of have the attitude that D20 is the "training wheels" rpg while it takes men to play WW! :D I love both games, most people probably have at least dabbled in the "other" system at some time. Can't we all just get along ? :D I look forward to seeing it, and will likely buy it since I am addicted to buying game books. |
| greatamericanfolkhero08-07-07, 02:07 PM | I don’t play WoD, but a few of my friends do, and are trying to get me to join the game they’re currently in. When news of this came out we had the following exchange: Nick: Monte Cook is creating a d20 WoD. Me: When it comes out I’ll run it for you. Nick: Really? Me: Yup, you will of course have a -10 angst penality to everything. But don’t worry, your Lament Existence feat cancels that out. Nick: This is going to be silly, isn’t it. Me: Yup. |
| ZenZ08-07-07, 02:57 PM | The EMO's do tend to lean toward WoD. Of course then again do the hot goth girls! |
| Thakowsaizmu08-08-07, 01:37 AM | The EMO's do tend to lean toward WoD. Of course then again do the hot goth girls! Gotta love hot goth girls! EMO, eh, those I could do without. |
| j0lt08-16-07, 07:52 PM | Monte Cook presents... d20: the Rolling It will eat your soul. Those WoD gamers have nothing bad to say about d20 gamers! They're a 5-foot step away from being freakin' LARPers! Not to mention the whole pretentiousness of the WoD setting... |
| Pyrate_Jib08-29-07, 03:33 PM | I took a look at the book at Gen Con and as soon as I can scrape up the funds it is going in my collection! It is not your standard WoD, it is much more a post 9-11 setting. Of course it is set in Minneapolis so I have to run this for my group. |
| KriegsaffeNo909-01-07, 01:33 PM | The new WoD system ain't bad at all. What the heck are "Awakened Ones," though? Hunters? "Half-breeds" (like Ghouls, Wolf-Blooded, and Sleepwalkers)? People who just, for whatever reason, shirk off paradox and lunacy? Maybe it's a class type that serves as a transition from normal human to a freak. If he converts the Mage casting system to d20, and gets it reasonably correct, I could not be happier. |
| Thakowsaizmu09-01-07, 06:11 PM | If he converts the Mage casting system to d20, and gets it reasonably correct, I could not be happier. That would be pretty cool. A while back there was someone who proposed the use of Spell Seeds from the Epiclevel Handbook as spheres. You can concievably create any spell with the Seeds, so it is a cool idea. Then again, if you are talking about the new mage, I don't know if that works like MtA and thus I may have missed the point of your post entirely. |
| Thakowsaizmu09-11-07, 12:13 AM | So, I saw the book in the store the other day. I flipped through it some and let me tell you, wow. It is pure unadulterated CRAP! The classes are lame, and your "race" is pretrty much your class. Werewolves have a BaB of +4 at level ONE! Same with Vampires. It is based on the nWoD (which I assumed it would be, but I hoped for otherwise) and they forgot like half of the stuff for each clan, tribe usw. The disciplines and what not are lame, so much so that they lost my attention almost as soon as I began to look at them (and I love new rules / options and so forth). There's more, but all in all this book isn't worth the paper it's printed on. Sadness. |
