| Mindolin08-16-07, 10:55 AM | Okay everyone, I'm thinking of starting a Naruto D&D game soon, and was having some problems with deciding how to do the Kekkai Genkai, before deciding to do them as Heritage feats, like the Fey, Demon, and Dragon heritages in Complete Mage and Arcane. Just wanted to get some people's ideas on it and maybe some help balancing them. I'm starting with the Sharingan and hoping to get to some of the others later on. One Tomoe Sharingan PreReqs: Member of Uchiha clan, 3rd Character level. The Sharingan develops in you, and you gain a +2 bonus on Spot checks and Spellcraft checks, a +1 bonus on saves against directly harmful illusions, such as Phantasmal Killer, but not on, as an example, an illusionary floor over a pit. Special: You may gain this feat even if not a member of the Uchiha clan, provided you can somehow find a near death Uchiha who is willing to grant you his eyes. Good luck not having them kill you. Two Tomoe Sharingan Prereqs: Member of Uchiha clan, One Tomoe Sharingan. 5th character level, able to cast 2nd level spells. The character's sharingan evolves, to where each eye now has two tomoe. The character immediatly gains the spells Dispel Magic(Counterspell only, counts as 2nd level spell) and Suggestion. The bonus to spot and spellcraft checks increase to +3, and the character gains the ability to use a spell that is used against him, regardless of if it affects him. The spell to be learned must appear on the character's class spell list, and can only be learned if the character has an open spells known slot, or is able to learn all spells of a particular level. |

| Mindolin08-29-07, 12:26 PM | Anyone at all? |
| JosephKell08-29-07, 01:51 PM | I think that Naruto (and many other settings) are better served with a SW Saga port. For instance, Kekkai Genkai could separate talent trees that are opened up by taking a feat, perhaps make the feat only selectable at level 1, but the talents can't be purchased until later. Also, I don't think making the Sharingan a flat +1 vs illusions is bad (or unbalancing). If you do decide to adapt Saga, this is how I would do the Sharingan: Sharingan [Kekkai Genkai] Prequisite: Trained in Initiative, Blood Related to Uchiha Clan Benefit: You have access to the Sharingan Talent tree and have a +2 bonus on all skill checks related to fire style jutsu. Special: This feat can only be taken at 1st level with your GM's permission. You can only have one Kekkai Genkai. Sharingan Talent Tree: First Tomoe: You are better able to read situations. Any time you have to make an initiative or perception (spot) check you may re-roll, but you must take the second roll even if it is worse. In addition, you get a +1 Bloodline bonus on your Will Defense against Illusions. Requires Heroic Level 3. Second Tomoe: Add Rebuke to your Ninjitsu Suite, if you already have Rebuke in your suite, you have one additional use per encounter. In addition, you can use a Rebuke to mimic a Ninjitsu that didn't target you as long as you do so before the user's next turn. You gain a +2 Bloodline bonus on Will Defense against Illusions. Requires Ninjitsu Training, First Tomoe, and Heroic Level 7. Third Tomoe: Your ability to mimic and dispel other ninja ninjitsu has grown. During an encounter where you have successfully copied a ninjitsu (by using the Second Tomoe), you can expend a Rebuke from your Ninjitsu Suite to activate that power again. You gain a +3 Bloodline bonus on Will Defense against Illusions. Requires Second Tomoe, and Heroic Level 11. Bloodline bonuses never stack to the same thing. I just make up the Bloodline bonus by the way. I would also have a Ninjitsu Specialization tree, unfortunately I can only think of one talent that would be perfect. Ninjitsu Recovery: Ability to recover a specific spent Ninjitsu type on a natural 19 (on a natural 20, all spent Ninjitsu are recovered). This can be selected multiple times, but each time it is selected it replaces the previously selected Ninjitsu move. This makes it easy for a character to have a signature ability. For example, a Sharingan bearer would do well to select Ninjitsu Recovery (Rebuke) because it powers their mimic ability. I would also make a Prestige Classes for the different levels of Ninja, so Genin (sp?) would be the base class, Chunin is the "jedi knight" (Heroic level 7 required), and Jonin would be the "Jedi Master" (Heroic level 12th required). New Ninjitsu Powers: Chidori: You focus all of your chakra into your hand and use your momentum to shape it into a blade to strike down your enemy. Time: Full-round action. Target: One character or object within charging distance. Make a Use Ninjitsu check: If the result exceeds the target's Reflex Defense you hit. You deal damage equal to your unarmed strike plus 1d6 per square you traversed to strike your target (minimum 2d6 for charging 2 squares), if you critical, the extra damage from Chidori is also multiplied. If you can't reach your target within your movement your use was wasted. Special: Using the Chidori is tiring and gives you a persistent -1 step on the condition track after your turn ends. Obviously Chidori is perfect to mix with Surge (swift action to activate) as Surge gives a bonus on your speed (DC 20 check on Surge is +30 'force' bonus to Jump and +6 squares of speed, but I house rule that ever +5 over 20, is another +10 jump and +2 squares of speed). So yeah, Chidori is very powerful (especially if you Surge it), but persistent -1 steps are dangerous (-5 steps is helpless). If you don't know what the Condition Track is, it is Saga's replacement for clunky fatigue and exhaustion rules. The steps are: Normal, -1, -2, -5, -10 (and move at half speed), helpless. The penalty applies to everything (including Defenses). So in this case, if Sauske (sp?) were to use the Chidori 3 times from a rested state, he would be at -3 persistent steps on the condition track, therefore he suffers a -5 penalty on all attack rolls, defenses, skill checks (including Initiative). Persistent steps can only be removed by resting 8 hours (it gets rid of all of them). |
| Mindolin08-29-07, 09:06 PM | I don't have Saga yet, but I think I might have to look into it. I think that, if I play Saga, your version of Chidori is near perfect, as Sasuke can only use it three times in a day before collapsing. |
| JosephKell08-30-07, 01:37 PM | I am in the process of writing a Saga adaptation for a fantasy setting (loosely based on Errant Story), but if you would like help with what you are doing (even if it is just someone to help check your phrasing for clarity), let me know. Edit: I had a moment of insight just now. I think it would be very appropriate for a Naruto style game if more actions COULD provoke AoOs. For those actions (specifically those that are like dead on charges--i.e. predictable) allow for an opposed roll to take advantage of it. For example, using the Chidori should allow for an opposed Initiative check to allow the defender to act first (to initiate a pin or trip, or even just a grab). Series example: After Naruto learned the Rashangan, he and Sasuke had a fight. One of their instructors interfered and threw them (looked like a Double Attack to do a trip-n-throw on each of them). But that might be bad and just bog down combat so perhaps it should be ignored. |
| Mindolin08-30-07, 02:45 PM | Yeah, Kakashi did interfere in that, but I see that as more of a plot thing to keep them from killing Sakura with the attacks, since both attacks are melee touch attacks, and yet both attacks hit nearby water towers while Naruto and Sasuke stayed on the roof. |
| curtis_ownby09-23-07, 12:41 PM | I would use Tome of Battle The Book of the Nine Swords. The maneuvers system would work well for jutsu. It is a stand alone book in that it can be added to any D20 system I think. Cheek it out. |
| Mindolin09-25-07, 09:41 AM | Yes, I like Tome of Battle. You tell me nothing I don't already know. However, the manuevers work well for Taijutsu, as you can use those all day long. However, since you can run out of chakra in Naruto, they don't work well for Ninjutsu or Genjutsu. And this is for the Kekkai Genkai anyway, not just the techniques. |
| Quarionthegolden01-20-08, 04:48 PM | if u are gonna use sharingan u MUST consider itachi's power and use him as an example for sharingan. Oh and put tsukuyomi in. |
| Mindolin01-20-08, 05:59 PM | One problem, what Itachi uses is not the Sharingan, it's the Mangekyou Sharingan. Small difference, it seems, but they are about the same as the spells Burning Hands and Fireball. I haven't finished the Mangekyou yet, because it's not a single ability. It actually varies based on who uses it, becoming something specially for them, which is why the abilities of Kakashi and Itachi are so different. Tsukyomi is going to be made in the same manner as the Corrupt or Exalted spells from BoVD and BoED, as a general spell that requires Mangekyou Sharigan to learn. |
| Quarionthegolden01-21-08, 05:24 PM | well tsukuyomi could, on a failed will save, send the person briefly and mentally into the dreamscape, which is in heroes of horror in D&D. get some idea from there............... |
| Quarionthegolden01-21-08, 05:26 PM | and mangekyo sharingan should have a requirement similar to the requirement for it in the anime......... |
| Mindolin01-22-08, 10:43 AM | Tsukyomi would be a variant of Shivering Touch, that deals Wisdom damage, maybe not any actual physical damage, since Kakashi looked like he was fine, apart from being in a coma, after Itachi beat the heck out of him. Perhaps make it to where it is a curse that needs a Remove Curse from a 16th level Caster to be lifted, which makes it to where Tsunade, who is the highest level cleric there, is needed. |
| Quarionthegolden01-24-08, 11:47 AM | k u do that. next, what about kimimaro's bloodline? THAT WOULD BE AWESOME! |
| AbasAuvi01-30-08, 11:22 PM | For the mangekyou Sharingan you could have a group of feats that players can choose two or three of to create a unique variant. |
