Ladies and Gentlemen of the Map of the Planes.

It's been sleepy lately.

So I offer you all this challenge. Think you're up for it? It's not a long one.

Part posting game, part character - building game. Here's how it works.

1. When you post, you agree to do as bidden by the next poster.

2. That's because the poster below you gives you a short phrase, snippet, or idea to create a character around. It could be anything: "Make me a gun-slinger" "Create someone with nothing to lose" "It has to be a paladin". Anything!

3. Once you've made your character, put his or her bio here (and anywhere else you want to) so we'll all have a common reference point.

4. Then, once your character is made, do something with him/her. Arena battle, stint in the Tavernne, I don't care. You have to use the character you create for at least a few days.

5. Whether or not you keep the character around after that is up to you.

At any time during this game, you can PM me one of your three votes for any character in the contest. Whoever you think is the most original, the coolest, or what-have-you. You get three votes per poster, keep that in mind.

The winner of the contest (which will close when I say so) will get a drawing of their character (not much, I know. But it's the best I can give out as a prize.)

Note: when the Sands of Time continues, the winner of that tournament will still get a comissioned drawing.

Go to it!

"pure of heart"

the team made its way through the ship that looked like a hurricane had passed through. the body's of ithlids were everywhere.
"who could do this to the flayers? jason, do you feel anything?"
"yes, in the elder chamber, probably some sort of enhanced brain"
when they burst into the room, they were shocked at what they saw.
a girl, standing in front of a dead thoon elder brain.
all you all right?
" they were bad..."
did they attack you? take someone you know?
"no, but one of their slaves stole from an old man, i followed him here, and when i asked for his things back they laughed, then monsters came"
errai
errai is a innosent creature with unnatural strength. she appears to be a human girl, with a poor understanding of how the world works laws, for example have no meaning unless they do the "right" thing. in her mind, everything "bad" must be stopped, from petty warlords to great evil dragons.
ill finish later, must rest

Perfect. I've been looking for a way to introduce two new characters.

Give me someone so pure of heart the world should theoretically eat them up and spit them out, yet so strong they change the world around them to conform to the idea of how things should be.

There is an old legend about the blood moon. They say that unless a human sacrifice is made every ten years, the blood moon will rise up and with it will rise the Orranlinks, the slavering beasts that haunted the land in centuries gone by.

Of course, no one believes this anymore. In the last decade the kingdom's undergone some major changes. The old idols were burned and the temple to the new gods was at last finished. People could now pay allegiance to the more progressive kind of deity. There will be no sacrifice tonight!

A few hours pass. Imagine the look of surprise on people's faces when the moon rises into the air and instead of its usual misty white it is crimson. Imagine the look as the Orranlinks rise out of the ground and prey on their lifeblood.

Now watch the new temple as the priests rush out to defend it. Spells fly out and slay the monsters as they advance, but not enough. In a few minutes they will reach the line. The rest of the battle will be short and gory.

One priestess is not fighting. A recent convert to Oura, the goddess of Ajada, Elira huddles in the corner. She cries and preys to Oura, knowing that it is useless, knowing that the goddess cannot bring harm anyone, not even such atrocities.

Suddenly, a different god addresses her. No one knows his name, and those who refer to him by a silly pseudonym such as Trader are denied his blessings. One thing is known for sure-he is a businessman. Everything he gives out comes at a price. Yet many people agree to pay, because business works out best when every party has the better of the deal, or at least believes it does. Sometimes the payment is in goods. Far more often it is in deeds. If there is no other way to pay, the god will always accept pain.

"Little one, do you wish this to end?"

"Yes! Yes, please! I'll give you anything!"

"Anything, eh? Well...I am sorry to tell you this, but the price for overturning an ancient prophesy is great. I'm afraid the only way to pay for this is for you to go to Hell."

"Hell...but...Yes! I accept!" Elira blurts out.

"Very well. Because I like you, I'll cut you another deal. Preach Ajada where you go. When you preach to the right people, all will be made well."

"Thank you!" Elira says right before disappearing.

Even as she vanishes, the moon suddenly turns white all in one go and the Orranlinks melt into puddles of screaming goo. Elira's willing sacrifice has made sure that no one would have to be sacrificed unwillingly ever again. It also helped ensure that a Hell a few multiverses over was about to get a big surprise.

Lunoc, you can compete only once -- that is to say, submit only one character (based on what Septimus has suggested to you). If you'd like, you can edit your post to place a suggestion for me so that you can get a chance to make a suggestion.

Also, note that to keep things smooth, please edit your characters into your post on this thread.

Note finally that this post won't be considdered an opportunity to make a suggestion to me, the next poster's suggestion will be applied to Septimus.

To call him a street rat would be an understatement, and a king would be to insult him. To his followers, he was simply Nylus. To everyone else, he was the Rag Man, and he ruled the beggars, the knaves, the rejected and the downtrodden. Put on a rag in his city, the legends say, and you must pay the tithe. For those who do not find that even a beggar's wrath can be deadly.

The Rag Man seems to all to be the fallen noble. His cloak is caked with mud and riddled with holes, his boots beaten and patched shabbily. His clothing is so old and dusty that it has faded to nothing more than the gray of hopelessness. His eyes are hidden in a dirty blindfold, with only the barest slit to see out of, and his face is wrapped in a scarf, like a leper or an untouchable.

Flies are the Rag Man's friends, rats his confidants. He moves as a shadow through the city, appearing both as man and myth. The children chant his name into mirrors and see his face, telling them to hush before giving them a coin. Watch officers swear there are more than one of him at once. And on a new moon's night, when the witching hour is nigh, a scent, like lillies and starlight, wafts through the streets the Rag Man protects.

But the Rag Man is not without enemies, and now he finds himself far away from home, banished to Hell by a rival in his home. Nylus wants back to his streets and his people - and he is willing to do anything to get it.

For there is nothing more dangerous than a man with everything to lose.

I'm up for it, somebody give me something to create a character from.

Ice Eyes: Suggestion: Dalhamun Etragan, basically translated as Tornado Demon.

EDIT:
Nice take on that Ice Eyes. I expected something along the lines of a less poweful and more evil being that controls and turns into tornadoes. Good job though, your take was certainly a surprise.

They called her the demon of the skies, the witch of the storm. All her life she had done everything in her power to help them. She brought them rain in the dry season. She healed their sick children. She stopped the storms during harvest.

And they hated and feared her for it.

Such pitiful, pathetic creatures they were. So fragile, and so young, she had viewed them as her children. Well, naughty children they were now. She looked out over the golden fields and grinned wickedly. Let them see what how they felt about hating her for their easy way of life. How would they feel with starving bellies and sick children and no Vorday to tell them what to do to save themselves.

”Mashay ick tothana, nomas dobane.” she intoned over her circle. She flicked some water into the dust, and clouds began to form overhead. She blew on the wet sand and the wind picked up and howled around her. She hit the small dagger with the flint, and as it sparked lighting cracked overhead. Everything she did merely intensified the storm growing over the village she had cared for for so many years.

The final touch

She began to swirl her finger around and around over the wet, windblown, sandy circle. Hail began to rain from the skies as the clouds over the field began to circle ominously. Slowly, like the finger of a god, the swirling vortex descended to the earth and began to tear out the field. Vorday pulled the string out from around her circle of sand and swiped the dust away, freeing her storm upon the village.

Oh yes, they would regret having no Vorday to help them now. For she was no longer just the Demon of the skies. She was the Demon who had called the wrath of the skies upon them. She was the Tornado Demon.

EDIT

OOC: Hells, I gotta do a palidan, I suck at palidans. Ah well, tis but a challenge to overcome.

BIC:
How would he ever accept that what he had done was the right thing to do? Jariko thought to himself.

His world had clearly been corrupted beyond salvation, and he had tried to save them all, but was it the right thing to do. Was he justified in destroying the entire population of the planet? Why did his spell save him when he would have gladly been a martyr? And of course, where was he now and how did he get there?

Where ever he was, it was bright and just felt.. right.

Jariko ThundarStar A voice boomed from all directions at once.

The young palidan ducked and put a hand onto the hilt of his sword. "Who is there?"

The voice spoke once more, this time less boomy though. Jariko, for your deeds you have been spared the fate of your world.

Jariko hung his head and relaxed himself. "So I am correct in thinking I destroyed my world. I dare to say you are mistaken sir. I dont deserve to be spared... I deserve damnation."

The voice was silent.

Jariko continued. "My naivity knows bounds, I know what manner of being you are." He pauses momentarily. "If I am to be spared from death then I can only ask one thing of you: That you send me somewhere that I may redeem myself for my deed."

The voice lets loose a mighty chuckle. Your nobility is great, young one. Your actions on your world were just and fair, but if you truly wish to seek out redemption, I shall send you to a place of true evil.

Jariko only bows to the voice's decree.

Contact me when you have satisfied yourself. With this the young palidan fades from view in a flash of yellow light. Tears fill his eyes as the young man disappears. His words echo after he has gone. "This time I shall not fail them."

what came of Ice_eyes' suggestion:

The wind swept across the barren wasteland, tugging the red silk wrappings. A tall figure stood high on a rock spire in the middle of the desert. Red silk covered his form, head to toe, and turned away as he was his face was hidden. The ends of the red silken wrappings were flowing in the wind, displaying tears and dirt clearly visible.

The sun was setting, casting its last blazing rays upon the desolate waste of shifting sands. The golden globe on the sky, robbing all water and life from the lands around was leaving for the night. Soon the winds rippling the silk wrappings would be frigid to no end, slaying anything that could survive the intense heat of the daytime.

Yet still the figure remained standing utterly still as it had done for hours. And last time Jacques had been here, the figure had been standing there in the exactly same position, as if it had not moved at all. It couldn’t possibly be living, nothing could survive like that. Only temporary trips into the waste was possible, provided that you took the greatest of care with your things and brought your own food and water, and even so these trips were very draining, it had taken 3 years to get back in shape after his last research trip.

Magic didn’t work out here, from the edge of the desert of dead men and inwards, no supernatural powers worked at all. This was close to the center of the desert. Jacques was determined to figure out what caused this zone, and possibly also why the desert were able to change more than 200 degrees Celsius in a single day without supernatural intervention. In fact Jacques was probably the best bet the Guild had, for he was the only fire descendant in the guild and the only one with natural resistance to the heat, and thankfully mundane protections from cold were enough out here.

This time Jacques was set on investigating the… thing upon that cliff. This was the best time for it, the heat had died down enough for him to think clearly, despite his resistance to fire not even he could survive outside at noon and until the last hour before sunset it was still very uncomfortable. While his mind worked properly now, there were also sufficient ambient light to catch all the details, unless a storm was coming of course.

Upon reaching the top of the spire and standing next to the thing Jacques could estimate it better. It was about 2.5 m tall, shaped like a human wrapped in a layer or two of thick red silk cloth. Speaking of the cloth, it should ignite at day, but either some unnatural effects could work out here or it wasn’t what it seemed to be, but what it could then be was a good question. It didn’t seem to have hands, or its fists had been clenched when it was packed up.

Its face though, solved the mystery about its persistence and immovability, for this was a statue with a face carved from some enormous white gem, an opal or something. It was made with extreme detail, picturing a delicate human face with closed eyes, and the amount of detail was astonishing, it even had eyelashes. Jacques couldn’t resist the temptation to take a closer look, and that was when it stopped making sense.

As Jacques’ breath hits the face the eyes opened, revealing a blue glow beneath the eyelids. Impossible, no supernatural effects worked here, but nonetheless they glowed. Jacques hadn’t even had the time to think more about it before a sudden burst of wind send cascades of sand into his back. He turned and saw that it was in fact not a weather phenomenon at all. Instead a pillar of sand, bursting from the ground at the base of the cliff in the tall end shed dirt and dust to all sides. The pillar persisted for a moment before collapsing, leaving a spiraling stair down into the dunes near the spire. As if they had come to act on their own accord, Jacques’ legs carried him towards the stair, and the lack of hesitation in his steps led him to think that he was under magical compulsion. As he stepped onto the stairwell Jacques was trembling with fear, he didn’t know if it could hold his weight, and a fall from this high would certainly cause injury. His feet continued relentlessly though.

The stair held, and after a frightful descend about 20 feet downwards Jacques reached the entrance to a chamber. He slowly entered, and as soon as he was in there the door slammed shut. As it did globes in each corner of a small rectangular room lit, illuminating the room brightly. In addition blue glowing runes appeared on the wall in the far end of the room.

This is the last note I write in my project, which is to be passed on to the world. I discovered the white void opals mining in this cliff. They were easy to enchant at first, but the more I magic they contained the harder they got to apply further effects upon, and when applied with raw magical energy they created an aura that suppressed all supernatural effects. I decided to see if sufficient enchantments would be able to create the dead magic as well and thus kept on empowering them even as it ate away my life force. In the end I moved myself into the construct I was making from the opals and red silk because my body had been broken by the enchanting, there I discovered something strange. Even when causing a dead magic aura for everything else my abilities were fully usable and unhampered. I was able to use temporary spells upon myself without hindrance too, but permanent effects were still getting increasingly difficult for me to use upon my creation. I have kept on though, expending parts of my soul in the process. Tonight I am going to make the last piece of work, effectively eliminating me completely from the fabric of the multiverse. In return my creation, my child, shall have intelligence, a mind of his own.
-Cruor Solitudo

Jacques went back to the door, and it opened as he approached. He walked up the stairs, once again under his own control, as quickly as he could, scared that the magic that held them together would fail before he was safely back on the cliff. As he returned to the statue, construct he corrected himself, he wondered why it was stationary if it had a mind of its own. He shook his head and mumbled to himself “it seems like you failed after all Cruor Solitudo”.

The last two words seemed to boom in the air despite the fact that Jacques had merely whispered them. As the sound faded away a slightly stronger glow assembled in the innermost corner of the thing’s left eye. Suddenly what looked like a tear formed and ran down the face of the construct, leaving a blue trail behind. Finally it dropped to the ground, but it didn’t wet it, for the tear was made of pure magical energy. Where it hit the ground a blue glow formed and spread. Jacques stepped away to avoid touching the raw essence on the ground.

Suddenly the blue part of the cliff reformed into an orb of glowing magical energy. The orb slowly levitated outward, towards the edge of the spire and further, hanging in the air about 20 feet from the rock. Jacques stared with amazement, more than aware that his own spells were still useless here, and now aware of the reason as well.

The construct with the face of white opal and the body made of silk seemed to wake up now and stride forth towards the edge. As it stepped onto thin air, sand rose from the desert below and formed a step for the construct the step upon. For each step it took another bit of platform was formed from the sands from below. Thus the construct left behind a trail in the air as it walked to the blue orb.

As it reached it a blade made from more of the white opal emerged from the end of its arm, and with a swift movement it drove the razor gem into the orb. A ripping sound was heard as the sphere started shifting and shimmering before reforming into a large blue disc hanging in midair. The construct looked back briefly, gazing Jacques into the eyes for a moment before stepping forward into the blue disc, dissolving into red flowing silk. The disc then collapsed on itself and returned to ball shape before it disappeared in a blue flash. As it vanished, two words were heard in a loud whisper across the desert

I like it Munch, a little cryptic, but good. Just so you know, opals have flecks of rainbowed color in them that will refract sunlight in all hues, and seem to glitter. Black opals do the same thing.

Unless someone new comes in, I don’t know if you will get a prompt. We have to prompt the person in front of us who has no prompt, and we can’t be prompted by anyone who has already given a prompt.

The bright light from the sun prevented him from noticing that while in the desert... painfully bright despite it being almost sundown.

Now to add to the sense of mysteriosity, how would Elmira's mothering instinct react the a 2.5m sliken construct with a gem face?

Indeed.
