The Somatotype (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Somatotype) is a base body type. Taking this concept by using the 6 basic classes of d20 modern and modifying the game per that is an experiment we've been toying with.

This concept takes player choice of a single basic class. This expands up to L20 and is the "class" of the character. This determines the hit die and the save throw bonuses of the character as well as the action points and skill points.

The "basic" progression determines the class skill max rank, the cross class skill max rank, the feats and ability increases.

There is no progression in any of hte basic classes as they are now somatotypes. Once chosen the character is "forever" that somatotype. The player selects the character's real class, i.e. now viewed as professions.

These classes do not include skill point progression, do not have hit die and do not have saving throw bonuses. They do have BAB progression and whatever special abilities they give.

This will give a basic form to every character that is based on that character and not on their chosen field.

So, you could have a "fast" fighter, or a "tough" mage.

The experiment test with this has been using D&D3.5 classes. It hasn't been play tested yet, but the rules changes are being written up for testing.
