The tavern stood at the edge of the bleak plains, nearly blending in with the grey and brown stretch of land before it. Clouds blotted out the sky and shadowed the land beneath. Wind blew, dull and cold. It was not a good day, nor was it the best of places to be. The land was dead and dreary. Yet a forest of darkest green stood a few miles out, swallowing the horizon. Suddenly the tavern's door slammed open and a young girl stomped out. Noise and chattering blared outside from the open door as it swung back and forth in the wind. The girl, obviously angered, marched out towards the fields, carrying in her shealth at the waist a slim sword. She stopped on the rise of a hill and sighed, looking down.

"I hate them..." .she whispered, glancing back at the tavern spitefully. She had grown up there, having been adopted by the owner. But he had died years ago, leaving the poor girl to tend with dirty old men and rowdy drunks. It was no place for her, even if she could defend herself. She put her hand on the shealth of her sword. It was her only safeguard. Suddenly a man appeared in the doorway, staring out at her. "Come back in, we didn't mean it!" he called over, trying not to laugh. The girl shook her head, her heart filled with terror. Then she turned and broke into a run, dashing down the hill and up the next, fleeing from her last home

Garrin stood atop a hill, looking down upon the scene before him. His simple black cloak and long black hair, uncommon for the race of elf, billowed and swayed slightly as the soft breeze crossed the open fields. He fiddled with the pommels of his twin rapiers, each strapped across his waist, and stared intently at the young girl who had just ran off.
Garrin understood.
With a small smile, the elf started out down the hill, past the tavern, and followed the trail of the young girl, striding easily over the hard ground and gaining on the girl with each step.

She did not look back, she only ran, but soon tired quickly. She stopped to breathe, her heart pounding wildly in her chest.

"I can't go back now,"she sighed sadly, resting on the ground. The stretch of dead grass and rocks stood before her, endless and impossible. She tried not to think of her chances of surviving out here, alone and cold. All she wore was her snug white blouse and brown pants with a thick belt. Her light brown hair was blown back in the wind as tears formed in her eyes. She couldn't hold them in any longer, so she cried softly, her face in her hands.

The half-afreet gith looked upon the scene with distaste, holding back the urge to incinerate the entire bar. He looks down at the girl, and decides to go down and help her. He descends straight down, landing right beside her.

He is gaunt, but muscular at the same time. His skin is smooth, dark red, and warm to the touch. He has long, red hair, and his eyes simmer with an otherworldly flame. He has a well-trimmed goatee. He is clad in short, red robes emblazoned with flame designs and arcane runes. He carries a short, wicked scimitar with a blade of some red metal on his hip.

He nods at the girl and says "Hello."

The girls gasps in surprise and staggers backwards.

"Get away! Don't come any closer!" she cries, drawing her thin sword weakly and shivering in fear. Her young face was tear streaked. Was everyone out to scare her?!

“Perhaps your unusual visage has taken the child aback. As, perhaps, mine also shall.” A wry voice comes out of the air in the direction of the dark woods.

With a faint shimmer in the air, the speaker appears. The creature is man-shaped, but with a gaunt, almost skeletal frame and face which belie his unusual nature. Pure white hair flows loosely from beneath a crown of pale silvery metal patterned after delicate flowering vines, ending midway down his back. Delicate ears which curve to a point peek out from his silvery locks and piercing blue eyes glow strangely above gaunt facial features. His slender frame is garbed in simple, but elegant robes of pale blue and grey, with no weapon in sight.

"Once I was thought quite handsome, but I fear my appearance has declined in recent years."

She glances around her surroundings, realizing that there were much more people around here than she had thought. How embarrassing! With a sigh, she wiped her eyes and shealthed her sword carefully.

"I'm so sorry... I was j-just scared... I can't trust anyone around here," she speaks softly, looking down at her feet guiltily.

"I've been harassed by those men at the tavern for so long.. I just can't stand it anymore. You're from the tavern aren't you? Are you guys here to take me back there? Well I'm not going back, never! I'm on my own now," she explained, brushing back her fine hair and standing with her hands on her hips.

The pale figure's eyes close slightly as a faint grin appears on his narrow lips. The girl has spirit.

"I have frequented the tavern you speak of in the past, but I've not crosses it's threshold in many years. Like you, I've no liking for the current patrons."

The smile fades from his mouth as his eyes fall on the dying landscape around him. "As for where I call home... Before the land began to die, I once called this place home, but I find there is no life here. Well, not as there once was."

He turns his head slightly, regarding the forest, and a melancholy expression takes over his face. "There are some places that resist the waning of life... but not many."

Turning back to face the others, his face once again takes on a somewhat vacant and unreadable look. "I am most recently called Araengel, one of the last of my kind to walk this realm, though I know not for how much longer I shall do so, and I bear you no ill will, girl."

"I am Suar-Lei. Enjoy my prescence while you can, for this is probably the first and last time you'll see a half-afreet githzerai." He looks at the girl and then at Araengel, wondering where this meeting might lead.

The elf had taken position behind a tree not ten feet from the strange group. While tracking the girl, he saw that not all was what it seemed. Perhaps he should accomodate as well.
Snapping off a bracelet, the air shimmers around Garrin and he disappears completely. For a moment all is still until another soft click sound comes, and the air shimmers once more, right where Garrin had stood. Standing there now, was a Zenythri, "Garrin's" true form. Larinthiose De`llavoi, or Larinose, hated the plane from where he came, since all Zenythri were born infused with certain aspects of law, and all the race believed themselves right no matter what. So Larios decided to come to The Prime Material Plane, under guise of an elf, since his metal like hair and eyes, and his bluish tinted skin would have surely caught attention.
Larinose taps his fingers against his rapiers hilts, then snaps his body around the tree and strides confidenetelly to the group. With a bow he says "I am Larinthiose Daimairko De`llavoi, but you, beautiful lady," he says to the young girl, bowing low and taking her hand, "may call me Larinose."
He stands again, smoothing his deep silk velvet, long sleeved, shirt, which covers his chainmail shirt underneath. He pulls tight his black leather gloves, brushes his black, baggy but not too much, pants and kicks his mid-thigh, high leather boots, with their tops turned down and the bottoms of his pants are tucked into. Then he greets the other beings, and with the introductions he bows once more.
"Zenythri Rogue Extroadinare!" He yells. "For all who care that is"
He adds with a chuckle.

The girl smiles a little, blushing a bit at all the introductions. She feels somewhat calm, although the icy winds bites at her. She shivers and then says, "I'm Opal... I have no other name. I've lived on my own for so long... but I must be off now; someone from the tavern might come looking for me."

Opal tilts her head, looking off into the bleak distance, dreading her lonely future.

"Well... um.. do you think that... maybe one of you could travel with me? I'm... scared," she says quietly, feeling quite pathetic.

Larinose bows low, flourishing both his hands out wide in small arcs and states matter-of-factly, " I would be honored, young lady, to walk beside you, and stand beside you within the bar if that is your wish," Then he adds with a wink "And I am quite the company, or so I am told!" He glances at Suar-Lei and the other strange creature, the telepathically tells the two: Come. Come with us. I believe something more shall brew from this. Something greater than what we are seeing, for we both know the extent of subtle vibrations from a small pebble if thrown into an undesturbed pond.

Araengel looks for a moment at Larinose and the girl, Opal. After debating whether to instruct the Zenythri to keep his thoughts to himself, he decides to let the intrusion into his mind pass. His ancient ego has lessened in the last few years, as the slow death of the land has drained much of his once magnificent power from him.

"I suppose it matters little whether I spend my last days here, or on the road with a group of individuals as intriguing as these."

Nodding his head to the girl, he continues. "If it is your wish, I will accompany you."

"I long to leave behind this place...," she murmurs, closing her eyes.

The despair of the land sickens her while lost memories of a brighter place haunt her. Opal shakes her head and gazes out towards the horizon. Menacing thunderclouds blot out the setting sun. Would there be a future for her?

"I'm heading into the forest now, I can't spare anymore time," she explains nervously, turning back to them and feeling a bit aprehensive. Could she trust these people that were practically strangers to her? Sometimes quick friendliness is a dangerous thing. But in her nearly empty heart, she was crying out for anyone within.

And with that she walked off and through the tall grass, her hair blowing back and her slim figure illuminated in the sunset rays.

After a quick glance at the other two, Araengel turns and heads after Opal, moving quickly to catch up, though he keeps his distance, not wishing to unduly worry her.

"The forest would have been my preferred destination anyway. It's a bit more lively than the local landscape."

Suar-Lei looks at the zenyrithi suspiciously. He knew that many of his kind were descended from gith. Could he be an assassin in the service of githyanki? An agent of a rival monastery? He decided that if he did indeed pose a threat, he could most likely deal with it, but he stayed alert all the same. He turned to Opal and said "I will accompany you on your journey, as I have little else to do."

A scream is heard from the tavern.

Malik walks out of the the tavern and mutters to himself,"They got what they deserve, harassing the girl like that. Those evil beings."
He sees the girl and two others with her going into the woods.
Malik trails behind, as he gets to the woods the plant life around him shrivels and dies.
He looks at the trees with remorse and continues to follow the girl and her companions.

Opal sighs as she makes her way across the drab field, glancing back once or twice at her new companions. The second time she looks back she sees something far off, trailing after them.

"Who is that?" she whispers, slowing her pace and gazing back. "Someone from the tavern is following us!" she exclaims, stopping in her tracks and shivering in the wind.

"I would like to join you where ever you're going.I feel so sorry you had to go through that ordeal. The ones who commited those crimes were punished severly. As a sign that I mean no harm I'll give you my only weapon." He pulls out a dagger and a sheath. The sheath is about 30 times larger than the dagger."Here you go," he says smiling.

Opal glances around at the dying plants and grasses. How strange...

"Oh, why thank you, but you don't have to give me your weapon," she replies, holding the dagger timidly.

She smirks at his eager friendliness, but then frowns at the strange way plants seems to die around him.

Then she glances about, gazing from the forest off in the dreary distance to the looming tavern on the hillside.

"You said you dealt with the men in the tavern? What happened?" she asks, remembering the infamous gang that had harrassed her for her beauty.

His usually expressionless face drawn into a scowl, Araengel surveys the newcomer. Something is not right with this one.

He watches as the land around this strange individual seems to be drained of life and a small, but growing fear begins to take root inside him.

After a moment of careful sensing, Araengel is surprised. He had half expected the life energy to be drawn from himself just as it had been drawn from the surrounding terrain. As with all of his ancient kind among the Fey, their strength and power was drawn directly from the world around them.

Oddly, this new stranger's power... or curse, perhaps?... seemed to have little effect on his own energies, though the dying of more of the precious life around him was still cause for much concern. The mystery grows more complex! This one requires close watching. Aloud, he voices none of his concern. "I am Araengel, traveler, but I did not catch your name."

Opal could still not believe that the tavern patrons had been dealt with. They had always been there, no matter how much she had screamed. They had always been there to taunt and degrade her. Was that all really in the past now? Had this man called Malik really wiped away her childhood fears? The thoughts kept coming and going in her head and she was silent for some time.

A wispy shadow floats in the clouds, descending like a feather. Fog builds up and billows around the area, enshrouding the ground. The little shadow touches in the ground, floating placidly for a moment before a brilliant aura blazes up, a sleek woman emerging from it. As the glow dies, she opens her eyes. Purple.

"This.. infectious land... has something for... you," she says, her voice warm, yet icy and sullen.

And with that she becomes the shadow again, retreating like a leaf caught in a breeze.
