Say, the table for a feat says you gain a +2 bonus, but the description of the feat says +3- you get the +3, as the table is usually wrong. Does this case apply to everything? While perusing Complete Divine, I was reading a section under Shining Blade of Heironeus- the spells per day says every even numbered level, and that is reflected by the table. But for Rainbow Servant, it doesn't list the levels the table does in the write up- it says 'whenever a level of Rainbow Servant is gained, you get spells per day... blah blah blah'. So the description of gaining spells per day says every level- not just the levels it claims on the Rainbow Servant Table of Abilities. I did some other research, and found many other classes do this as well- but many others actually list the levels which are null, and you don't gain Spells per Day. Is this just lazy typing? Or could one argue that the write up negates the table? Sure, RAI is glaringly obvious- but for theoretical builds, is this a RAW argument? |

However, there are a few cases where the table is correct, and this is addressed in revisions, errata, or whatever. One example is that the XPH indicates different Autohypnosis DCs in the text and the table; errate indicated the table was correct. The more famous example is the Rainbow Servant, where they refuse to admit their mistake openly, but the non-English copies of Complete Divine, which are newer, have non-contradictory text, which conforms to the *table*. (In other words, it isn't a full-caster.) A quick Google search will indicate just how much this has been debated -- in fact, roughly 90% of all Rainbow Servant discussion centers around that argument. (The remaining 10% are on adding spells to sorcerer class lists, and many of those devolve into this debate in time.) |
