The Chaos Engine was an isometric shoot'em'up popular on the Amiga (as well as SNES and Super nintendo, it was released in the USA under the title of Soldiers of Fortune),and was a little similar to cannon fodder. The setting was very interesting and wikipedia sums it up quite well, From Wikipedia... The setting is a steampunk Victorian era England. Baron Fortesque, a grand inventor, has succeeded in his greatest creation yet - the Chaos Engine. Unfortunately (for the rest of the proud kingdom), the Engine then proceeds to both capture and assimilate its creator, then begins to change the countryside for the worse. Vile monsters and destructive automata appear everywhere, bringing the citizens to the verge of panic. This lures a number of mercenaries on a potentially rewarding quest to find the root of the problem and swiftly bring a full stop to it. Owing to the lack of roleplay element and attention to details given by the creators, you can flesh it out as you wish. the way I visualise it is a steampunk setting, where the big bad guy is an insane psionic steam punk version of skynet, that is mutating and remaking the world as it sees fit. The Chaos engine itself was an early attempt at a computer, constructed to assimalate and control the Barons other inventions, however the machine was good at its job and assimilated the baron as well, it then began to make use of its creators genius (and maybe latent psionic abilities, a hat tip to all the strange metaphysical sciences that were popular at the time) to begin its reign of terror. The six characters that you have a choice of playing have the potential to be quite interesting. In addition to this you have the reaction of the rest of the steam punk world to flesh out at leisure, perhaps some of the greatest scientists of the day invent and erect and nodes to generate a field to protect London from the chaos engines influence, and hasty defences and barricades are built to protect against the rampaging monsters that periodically attack the city, london becomes a city under seige as ogrelike like monsters and flying abberations attempt to breach the walls and lines of soldiers that are fighting to keep them out. Its just an idea, but i feel that it has a lot of potential for you Steampunk fans out there. Here are a couple of links to Youtube vids of the intorductions to this game. the firt is taken from the more advanced CD32 version, the other from the Amiga version. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24gK74om9uw&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8i-IeMuv28U&feature=related |
