| Master_Vega12-19-07, 01:49 PM | On one of the many funny gaming story threads, someone posted about their friend playing a rather unusual wizard, one specializing in self-buffing and melee trouncing (kinda like a wannabe warrior cleric). Has anyone here tried to make a build like this? Not your standard "I hit you and you explode" gish build, but a self-buffing Wizard who can beat a fighter at being a fighter (yes, I know beating a fighter isn't hard)? It seems like a fun concept, one that I might play if it doesn't end up absurdly broken. :P Links, stories, builds and advice would be appreciated. Thanks! |

| WombleHunter12-23-07, 04:52 PM | The wizard who did that in a high-level game that I played in was a Wizard/Soulcaster. He used the Soulcaster free metamagic to power his Persistent Polymorph (and later, Draconic Polymorph and then Shapechange). |

That's a good combo. 11 base essentia plus 7 from feats (doable) would net 3 free persists a day at the cap of soulcaster with an incarnate base. |
| epifreak12-29-07, 02:07 PM | I imagine you want to avoid shapechange use, focusing on "punching someone out" in a wizard's frail body as opposed to a balor's? |

| Impeesa01-04-08, 07:10 AM | Old-school Incantatrix abuse. The errata about not being able to metamagic a spell beyond a level you can cast doesn't apply to their 'metamagic effect' ability, so you can use it to apply Persistent Spell to your buffs after you cast them. Wraithstrike is a prime candidate, as are Bite of the Were-whatever, Righteous Might, and Divine Power (take Arcane Disciple [Competition] for the last two). Make or acquire an item with substantial spellcraft bonuses, though, or you'll have a hard time getting your buffs to stick every morning. :) |
| epifreak01-04-08, 02:25 PM | In that case, any of your standard gish builds should work well. This is how I tend to run gishes anyway (at least until I get my hands on shapechange ;) ) |
| NiteCyper01-27-08, 01:39 AM | Fighter 20. Find some way to spellcast and go Precocious Apprentice, Arcane Disciple, Earth Sense, Earth Spell, Heighten Spell, Sanctum Spell? (might've been in there) then Extra Slot x NI. |
| BetaSquirrell01-28-08, 07:40 PM | Double Post. I'm so ashamed. |
| BetaSquirrell01-28-08, 07:41 PM | Warblade 20, as the trick he's talking about can be done with any class. But that's not really a wizard, it's a spellcasting meleer. (There's a thread about it on TO front page.) On topic, how about using something like Shivering Touch to make your opponents drop faster? Ability damage/drain is nasty. |

Azer (LA+4) Outsider 4/Wizard5/Eldritch Knigth 7 Weak to ice :( but can make pretty good wounds. |
