| KJW11-30-07, 11:30 AM | You may or may not be aware but Community Management is developing a program for forum leads to serve as advocates of forums. This is being discussed here (http://forums.gleemax.com/forumdisplay.php?f=724) at the VCL directed discussion forums. There is an open forum where anyone can participate and I encourage anyone who is interested to do so. Community Management has been very responsive to comments and ideas and this is your opportunity to help develop the Gleemax/WotC community. I have been nominated to serve as the forum lead for d20 Historical. Nominated means being considered and has no official position just for full disclosure. I have only visited this forum a few times over the years and have never posted here so really I am a poor candidate for this position and I apologize. I was motivated to campaign for this position because of a comment that someone made in the directed discussion that indicated that this forum was, well, a pretty low-traffic forum and thus a low priority. That bothered me so I am here to try to see if this can be changed. History is such a powerful tool for roleplaying from inspiration for campaign settings to a source of adventure ideas so this forum has a broader appeal that most assume. I have just started looking back at older threads from this forum and see a good repository of ideas but there is no FAQ or important links thread for this forum (which is something we can correct). Maybe I am wrong and there isn’t much interest in this forum, but I have typically fond historical gamers to be very passionate about this subject. So I hope that I am right. Anyway, this thread is to collect ideas and feedback. So I want to start with some questions, but don’t be limited by them. 1. What do you see as the purpose of this forum? 2. Who are some of the best posters of this forum who would make good forum leads (and probably better than KJW)? 3. What are some questions that should be in a FAQ for this forum (provide answers if you want)? 4. What are some links that would be of use to historical gaming? 5. If we did competitions for d20 Historical how should they be organized and what would be a good topic? 6. Why do you think this forum has so little traffic? 7. What are your favorite topics to discuss in this forum? Thanks for your time and thoughts. - Kirk |
| ArgulFraster12-01-07, 11:35 PM | d20 Historical is almost always dead. Most of us are random posters...and I just click anything that looks interesting in D&D and D20 Experiments. |
| j0lt12-03-07, 06:14 AM | Problem with the d20 Historical forum's low traffic is mostly because there's also the d20 Past forum under d20 Modern. The two forums MOSTLY overlap, and since d20 Past is linked to an actual product, it gets more traffic. |
| KJW12-03-07, 08:23 AM | d20 Historical is almost always dead. Most of us are random posters...and I just click anything that looks interesting in D&D and D20 Experiments. What sort of interesting things would make this forum more appealing? Problem with the d20 Historical forum's low traffic is mostly because there's also the d20 Past forum under d20 Modern. The two forums MOSTLY overlap, and since d20 Past is linked to an actual product, it gets more traffic. So what distinguishes d20 Historical from d20 Past? |
| j0lt12-03-07, 09:49 AM | People post in d20 Past? :P Seriously though, d20 Historical isn't tied to anything, whereas d20 Past is an actual supplement book for d20 Modern. This is kind of a "theory" forum, while d20 Past is a "practical" forum. |
| KJW12-11-07, 09:39 AM | Would there be more interest if there were more resources in this forum for historical roleplaying? Such as links to sites, lists of books for time periods, and the like. |
| j0lt12-12-07, 12:21 AM | Yeah, that'd be cool. I think the fact that the majority of d20 gamers play D&D, and are more interested in fantasy than straight history RP is the main reason why there's not much activity here. |
| KJW12-12-07, 10:11 AM | Yeah, that'd be cool. I think the fact that the majority of d20 gamers play D&D, and are more interested in fantasy than straight history RP is the main reason why there's not much activity here. I definitely agree with that, but some resources here that were stickied could be a good idea and would make this forum a little more useful. If anyone has links or resources post them here and I will do a compilation. |
| j0lt12-12-07, 10:44 AM | If the CoC didn't prohibit talking about non-WotC products, this forum would probably be full of Sidewinder:Recoiled discussions, among others... |
| crazy_monkey195612-14-07, 11:31 AM | It be helpful to turn the theoretical into the practical. A significant project that could occur in this forum is taking the SRD and creating a specific historical setting. If anyone remembers the HR "green books" from 2nd edition, those could be the inspiration. The setting material in question could have three flavors - straight historical, low magic (referecning real world folk tales and myths for inspiration), and high magic (taking D&D magic and putting it into a pseudo-historical version of a specific Earth setting and time period). |
| KJW12-14-07, 12:17 PM | Yes, I do remember the green books well they were great resources, I still use the ones I have. I could envision mini-sourcebooks for time periods as being a great resource for this forum. I am also starting a new thread to compile resources for historical campaigns by time period, which includes books, movies, and the like. |
| j0lt12-14-07, 12:24 PM | I suppose I could'a started my d20 Past: Japan project here... I may still move it just to get things going in here. |
| KJW12-14-07, 01:11 PM | I suppose I could'a started my d20 Past: Japan project here... I may still move it just to get things going in here. I guess the question is whether your Japan project is more of a d20 design experiment than a d20 Past supplement. If your Japan project is pretty much intended to fit into d20 Past I suggest you leave it there as that will be most helpful to people. That said information about historical Japan would be a valuable resource here as would more out-there d20 mechanics you might be developing. |
| j0lt12-15-07, 01:59 AM | It's kind of a design experiment. I basically wanted to put together a d20 Modern-based feudal Japan supplement. |
| KJW12-16-07, 01:30 PM | The maybe here is the place to be! Though I suspect that really you are better off at d20 Past for the moment as it has more activity which is always helpful with projects. |
| j0lt12-17-07, 05:01 AM | I may move it in the near future, but my inspiration has stalled for the time being. :P |
