| Tanithera02-10-08, 04:22 PM | A few years ago, one of the community boards I was wanting to find out if DBZ had been converted for RPG. Someone on there sent a Z-Fighter prestige class with details. Unfortunately time, and moving, that has been lost. Considering the length of time since then I wanted to see if DBZ now has been converted to d20 plus information on a Z-Fighter class or prestige class. I would appreciate any assistance as quickly as possible. Thanks. Tanithera |
| Mindolin02-11-08, 02:59 PM | Don't know about an actual class for it, but you can always use the Varient Psychic Warrior that gains a psychic mantle instead of the 2nd level feat. Take energy and you can go on blasting all the evil aliens you need to blast. |

Tanithera You can Multiclass Dynamic Sorcerer and Martial Artist (or play straight MA), then spend leftover or bonus CP on Teleport, Fly, and Special Attack. Don't think it would work as a prestige class, though. |
| Prime3202-12-08, 01:34 PM | If you're wondering what faghter_hero is talking about, he's referring to BESM d20 (Big Eyes Small Mouth) - search for it or "Anime d20 SRD" Psionics seems the way to go, but what are psychic mantles anyway? I like psionics, but I don't have access to any material besides the SRD. An elan could take large amounts of punishment by expending "ki", and then there's the fusion power... |
| Mindolin02-12-08, 05:34 PM | Check Complete Psi, they are special groups of related powers, similar to a cleric's domain, that an Ardent or Divine Mind can take, but unlike the domain, the spells are chosen from them as you would take spells for a Sorcerer. |
| Malancthon03-13-08, 12:39 AM | Many years ago, I created a Z Fighter class with an optional Super Saiyan PrC. I wonder if that's the one you remember (I was able to modify it into BESM d20 as well). In a nutshell, the class worked like a cross between a monk, a barbarian, and a warlock. You had the ability to throw around d6 "chi blasts" at will and you powered up in a manner similar to raging. You could also fly as a spell-like ability. The Super Saiyan PrC granted more powerful rages. I had also statted up Saiyans and Nameks. After 3.5 came out, I set it aside, and after I found BESM, I focused mostly on adapting to that game style. Something I've been toying with to update DBZ d20 is to incorperate it into Star Wars Sagas edition. This idea would call for the Z Fighters to actually be a variant force tradition, but uses the base Jedi class. Force powers would easily replicate many chi techniques (Mace Windu does go DBZ melee style in the Clone Wars cartoon, after all). The Super Saiyan PrC is also in the works, something along the line of a Jedi Master or Sith Lord PrC. |
| elliott2003-13-08, 11:20 AM | I personally think that D&D or that D20 in general is a pretty terrible system for doing anything DBZ related. the fact of the matter is, DBZ characters routinely become magnitudes physically more powerful than anything any D&D character is physically capable of. I mean, we're talking about people here who routinely destroy planets, teleport around the globe, retain consciousness despite death, and raze entire planets in a matter of minutes. And it's not like they're doing this with great difficulty, this is almost passing thought for them. D20, by virtue of trying to tie the numbers down to reality, already have problems with this. For example, how much weight do you expect a super saiyan to lift overhead? can they lift 466 lbs on their body and suffer no ill effects? Well, vegeta prior to the cell saga trains in 300x gravity chambers. 466 lbs is probably like nothing to him. so his str score is already EASILY over 29, the upper limits of the STR score table. Let's say he's a 200 lb man (solid muscle and all), 300x gavity would make him weight 60000 lbs. And at this point, he's still able to train in it. so let's say that's a light load for him, that still makes him an estimated str of 70+ easily. we haven't even factored in all the other crazy **** he can do later on. I'm just saying, the actual numbers are not that important, it's the fact that DBZ routinely has people flying above the limits of human by order of magnitudes that makes any attempt at simulating it with the D20 system an exercise at futility. |
| Malancthon03-13-08, 01:21 PM | You can either A) try to make an exact conversion, which as you so eloquently put it, causes many headaches, or B) go with the feel and spirit of DBZ. Hell, you don't even have to go super saiyan route at all. Early Freeza saga and Death of Bardock has an excellent window to create your own space opera game in the same level as Star Wars. And anyway, with fluff you can do anything (which is essentially the art of DMing). Just because all you can do statwise is a mere 3d6 fireball does not mean that in the spirit of the game you can't destroy a planet- however, you can't destroy a planet without the DM's plot armour allowing you to. If you try to think d20 in terms of DBZ, that's madness. If you try to downplay DBZ and think of it terms of d20, it's doable. And just because you downplay the numbers aspect of DBZ doesn't mean you have to kill the spirit. |
| elliott2003-13-08, 01:32 PM | that's a fair assessment. I guess it has a lot more to do with the fact that I associate the over the top with the actual spirit of DBZ. I suppose if you just want to capture some parts of the DBZ world and incorporate it into the game (i.e. the technology, the flight, the energy battles) that is easily doable with psychic warrior stuff. To me though, I've always like the original Dragon Ball saga better than the later DBZ. anyway, just my two cents. |

A Warlock/Monk/Enlightened Fist could work as well. Bulma's works could be psytech or artificer stuff though. I've always thought the sci fi space opera parts of DBZ were a goldmine for a setting (and didn't really like it when it was stuck on Earth for the Cell Saga), so I usually go to Star Wars for a setting. Dragon Ball would work quite well as a pseudo-fantasy world in traditional D&D setting. Part of the problem is we don't know what the TC was trying to go for. Who knows if he still is looking for it. |
| elliott2003-13-08, 02:28 PM | me too, I always thought that the DBZ universe actually had a lot of very interesting backdrops and tidbits. But because the author focused so much on the fights and just powering up the characters, it was... a little boring, to be honest. |
| Malancthon03-13-08, 02:40 PM | The TV show is horribly tedious in that aspect, although that can be attributed in trying to stretch the show out to allow Akira Toriyoma the time to write his story. The manga is much cleaner and well defined, IMO. The only real rough stretch in his story is the early Android Saga, where he was annoyed that he had to continue the story (originally he wanted Goku to die on Namek and make that the end of DBZ). |
| elliott2003-13-08, 02:52 PM | That's how I felt too. I thought that the Freeza saga would have been a good place to finally end the story. I mean, it was super powered enough that it is actually rather epic but not to ridiculous degree that it later became. also, Ginyu Force characters are the GREATEST.TEAM.EVER. I remember there was one part of the anime (that wasn't in the comics, I think) where Ginyu is talking about the great rewards that Freeza would give him for serving him and he pulls out one of these: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/0/0f/Morinaga_Milk_Caramel_(Morinaga).jpg/444px-Morinaga_Milk_Caramel_(Morinaga).jpg yes, he pulls out a Morinaga Milk Caramel. Not an entire box, mind you. One. ONE. He got all excited over ONE Morinaga Milk Caramel. Later in the series, when trunks first shows up, King Freezer says whoever kills Trunks (who, by the way, was just shown completely scattering Freeza's ashes to the four winds in like, 5 seconds) gets TWO Morinaga Milk Caramels. And suddenly, all the redshirts decided that it was worth risking their life for this and they all charge him. Morinaga Milk Caramels, the most powerful force in the DBZ universe. |
| Malancthon03-13-08, 03:02 PM | That's pretty awesome. I'll have to remember the Morinaga Milk Caramels. |
| Prime3203-13-08, 03:06 PM | On a related note, see if there's any Sonic d20 material you can adapt. Sonic was an Expy (rip-off) of Goku from the start (http://ui05.gamespot.com/1764/211942335763eae7825o1.jpg), then Shadow was a rip-off of Vegeta (http://tn3-1.deviantart.com/fs9/300W/i/2006/022/3/5/SUPER_SHADOW_by_DARKDOWDEVIL.jpg). And recently, they've introduced this guy: http://images.wikia.com/uncyclopedia/images/thumb/c/ca/Silver_hedgehog.png/180px-Silver_hedgehog.png (He's from the future (http://uproar.fortunecity.com/conundrum/395/images/trunks.jpg)) |
| elliott2003-13-08, 03:58 PM | I got it now, the Morinaga Milk Caramel is actually one of the most PRECIOUS resources in the galaxy, kind of like how oil is to the US. The thing is, the raw materials themselves are EXTREMELY rare in the rest of the universe except on earth, where it is produce in abundance and made into this cheap little snack food by the Morinaga corporation, not realizing the gold mine they sit on. The rest of the galaxy, in the mean time, vie over this precious resource, with empires rising and falling to the breath of their yummy Milk Caramel goodness. Freeza and every other alien has discovered that on earth, the Morinaga Milk Caramel is merely peddled as snack food because earth is so rich of it. THAT'S why every conflict inevitably comes back to earth!!! It all makes sense now!!! That or Freeza's empire is really just the Evil intergalactic Morinaga Corporation in disguise, and he puts crack in all of his products before distributing them to his underlings, making them into fiending little drug mules who would do ANYTHING for another hit. ANYTHING. (What, you think the Ginyu Forces wear those cute little speedos because it's FASHIONABLE? Nah, you totally know that Freeza just loves his henchmen in pseudo-homoerotic swim wear) Oh my god, it's like there is a DBZ campaign to played here! On a related note, see if there's any Sonic d20 material you can adapt. Could you imagine the confusion if they showed up in the DBZ universe? Trunks: "More Saiyans? I thought we were like, the last of the breed or something?" Vegeta: "ZOMG, THEIR POWER LEVEL IS OVER 9000!!" *scouter explodes* |
