Edit: I've created my own PrC...it's at the bottom. Let me know what you all think?

I was wondering if I could get some suggestions for an upcoming 11th level Eberron campaign. We're focusing in Droaam and, specifically, all playing Monstrous races. I'll be using the Savage Species rules and, since I'm totally obsessed with Medusae, that's gonna be my race of choice.

So, I'm looking for a 10 level PrC that gives a good or decent BAB and a spell list. It should be qualifiable (is that even a word) by a Medusa (ECL 10). All books are available and we're using a 36 point buy. Cross setting is allowed.

Oh, and I don't really care much for Nar Demonbinders...:D

Hmm...another interesting option would be the "Greek" warrior. Think Xena on this one...

Soul Eater...are you absolutely sure you want spells? Ur-Priest and Sublime Chord are really the only suggestions for that, and Sublime Chord isn't available for a non-classed medusa. Ur-Priest is...and it does have 3/4 BAB. I dunno, I think I'd rather play a Soul Eater, creeeeeepy (and full BAB, all good saves, and some pretty darn nice abilities).

Well, Soul Eater seems nice but, I'm actually going to be Lawful Neutral (and a professional architect from Droaam working for hire in Sharn). It is a very powerful PrC but, it's not fitting for our campaign. But, believe me, I considered it. lol

Ohhh, LN...sorry, just the typical medusa's evil, didn't know you were playing another alignment. Ur-Priest requires evil too, sadly :( .

...wow. Would you mind worshipping a LN deity? Divine Crusader might work. Still 3/4 BAB, but you also still get 9th level spells, and that one is much easier on qualifying alignments. I dunno if there's a divine agency for architecture in Eberron or not, not too familiar with that aspect of the campaign world...

Yeah, Ur-Priest is out too 'cause I worship The Shadow...most lot of my insipration came from this (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ebds/20060905a) article about the Medusas of Droaam. I remember thumbing through one of my books earlier today and seeing a 10 level PrC that gives 6th level spells but, I can't seem to find it anymore or remember the damned source...

Hmm, from Champions of Valor - Knight of the Weave, attains 6th level spells by 8th level, pretty easy prereqs too. Unfortunately it's FR specific.

Say, since you have poisonous hair that means you can Venomfire it right? :D

ooh, now, how can we get Venomfire...

Knight of the Weave also get UMD as a Class Skill...great find, is exactly what I want. I don't see a section that says that gain or lose weapons/armor...kinda weird.

ooh, now, how can we get Venomfire...

By taking the Leadership feat and getting a cleric or druid cohort from Faerun to cast it for you.

Actually, that spell isn't really enamored to the campaign setting, I'd bet a DM would allow it into another campaign. Knights of the Weave won't get Venomfire, though...oh, just read the OP, cross-setting allowed. Yay! Kinght of the Weave is...hrm, a good choice mechanically, but the flavor needs readjusting. Are you allowed to do that at a later point, or does Eberron in this case have Mystra/Weave?

I'm going to have to guess it doesn't grant any additional armor/weapon proficiencies. I've seen too many other instances of things having not been explicitly stated being used for less savory purposes.

You might also check out the Duskblade core class in the PHB2. They have a full BAB and some nice spell progression. THey also get the ability to channel their touch spells through their weapons. I honestly dont know if you can do it with natural weapons, but even if not its pretty hot...

Yep.

I say play up the Charisma synergy to boost the DC of your gaze attack (13 + Cha Mod). Next highest ability score should go to Constitution to help you miss those 4 HD you'll never get less.

No, that's what I mean, Tweedledope's character is Lawful Neutral, so I was thinking he couldn't be a blackguard...if he could be evil, he's already got a hellishly powerful alternative.

I wouldn't say hellishly powerful, but it is definitely a strong choice. Honestly I'd pick it over Soul Eater given the choice, since that Gaze attack is going to kill a whole helluva lot more than Energy Drain.
Edea

I think Soul Eaters also use Charisma, but I do like the idea of a medusa blackguard (who also isn't dependant on the Book of Vile Cheese, a definite plus).

I was more interested in the class's Soul Radiance and Soul Slave powers rather than just the energy drain on its own. shapechange for 24 hours and unlimited undead hordes? Mwahaha.

Actually, it'd be dependant on one key issue; can you energy drain something that's been petrified? Flesh to stone says "[the target] is not dead," and doesn't say anything about being immune to attack forms (I hate it when they do that :/ ), but I'd guess a petrified creature would not be considered a viable target?

If they were, that'd synergize well with her gaze attack; petrify the victim, then drain at leisure until they're completely gone, then take the victim's shape and abilities for the rest of the day, and unpetrify (somehow) to get a slave out of it.

If you have access to Dragon Compendium / Dragon Magazine prestige classes, Shaper of Form is a very thematic caster prestige class for a medusa architect, allowing her to transmute the shape and hardness of objects* and creatures. You need to be able to cast 6 transmutation spells to qualify for it, so pretty much any full spellcasting class can qualify.

:)

* Which, depending on your interpretation of changing the form of petrified statues, might be terrific. "A human fighter? Hmm... why not a troglodyte!"

Euryale
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a322/tweedledope/Medusa___Character_Design_by_Smashi.jpg

Before you stands a Medusan woman...or is it? Her appearance is not like that of the normal for her race. Her normal locks of serpents have been enhanced to a greater strength and power while her horrid gaze has also been modified. As with the great mythological tales of Gorgons, a Euryale has hands made of brass and, can thus, become very efficient in melee combat. A 10 ECL Medusa can qualify for this PrC before taking any class levels and it is only available to said race. Inspired by the Medusas of Droaam (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ebds/20060905a).

Class Features
A Euryale learn how to fight in close combat with their snake as well as their hands. They also have a number of Invocations to aid them in battlefield control. A Euryale's caster level for her spell-like abilities is equal to twice her class level.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: A Euryale gains proficency the feat Exotic Weapon Proficiency (Medusa Snake Chains) as a bonus feat. She does not gain any other proficiencies with weapons. She also gains proficiency with all types of light armor and all shields (except tower shields).

Invocations: Invocations are Spell-Like Abilities. Unlike most Spell-Like Abilities, Invocations have Somatic (and in a few cases, Verbal) components. Arcane Spell failure of Medium (and heavier) Armor applies as normal. Invocations are activated as a Standard Action and can be used an unlimited number of times per day. At 1st level, only Least Invocations may be learned. At 4th level, you can learn any Invocation from the Least or Lesser list. At 8th level, you can learn a Least, Lesser or Greater invocation. Whenever a new list of Invocations becomes available, you may change one Invocation that was learned at an earlier level. Invocations are chosen from the Warlock list.

Forked Tongue (Ex): You, as well as your serpentine allies above, have a very accute sense of perception. As such, you gain the scent ability so long as your serpents are not in a hibernative state (as the Torpid Serpents ability described below).

Brass Fists (Ex): As legend told, the three Gorgon sisters all had fists made of brass. The Euryale gains the Improved Unarmed Strike feat with a few exceptions. Any melee or ranged weapon wielded by the Euryale takes a -2 penalty on attack rolls due to the strange inflexible nature of her new hands. Furthermore, she deals unarmed damage as a monk equal to her class level. The Euryale may enchant her hands much like a spiked gauntlet and still be able to use them in unarmed combat like a monk. Essentially, this allows the Euryale's primary attack to be unarmed strikes, yet, she can enchant them with magic for greater effect. You can resume or supress this ability at will as a swift action. When this ability is supressed, so is the magic that eminates from the brass. For example, if a Medusa enters melee and begins using her Brass Fists (which she has paid 8000 for a +2 enhancement bonus) she gains said bonus on her unarmed strikes. However, once the battle has subsumed, she can deactivate her Brass Fists ability and, thus, negate the magical aura and effect until she resumes the ability again. Once the ability is resumed, all original effects are restored. The brass fists are treated as manufactured and natural weapons for the purpose of determining magical effects. Levels in the Monk class do not affect the unarmed damage. If you take levels in Monk, you simply deal whichever unarmed damage is higher.

This class ability also gives you a very strong connection with your most primal force. When this ability is activated, you gain a +6 circumstance bonus on all Craft (Stonemasonry) and Profession (Architect) checks. The Medusas of Droaam are expert architects and stonemasons.

Snakes (Ex): The Euryale's snakes grow more powerful and, as such, do the indicated damage instead of that listed in the MM entry for Medusas.

Medusa's Kiss (Sp): You gain the ability, at 4th level, to use Medusa's Kiss (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ebds/20060905a) as a spell-like ability three times per day. Your caster level for this effect is equal to your effective character level. Effective character level is all hit dice (from class or racial levels) as well as any level adjustment.

Torpid Serpents (Ex): As a move action, the Medusa may force her serpents into a state of hibernation. While in this form, she gains a +4 bonus to Disguise checks to act as a female humanoid from another race. Also, she does not have to make Concentration checks to keep her snakes quiet (usually DC 10). Because the Medusa has focused her gaze strictly to her own eyes, she gains a +2 bonus to the DC of her gaze. Many Euryale's use this ability before entering humanoid settlements in order to blend in more effectively.

Serpent's Gaze (Su): At 7th level, you gain the ability to use Detect Magic and Read Magic at will. You also gain a +4 bonus on Spot checks due to the extra eyes atop your head. This ability does not work while the Torpid Serpents ability is in effect.

Milk Venom (Ex): A Euryale may extract the venom from her serpents once per day creating enough venom for one dose. DC for the venom is the same as is for the medusa including any augmented feats such as Ability Focus or Virulent Poison. Euryales are skilled in the use of poison and never risk accidentally poisoning themselves when applying poisons. The poison created by Milk Venom is an injury only poison and can be applied to the Brass Hands ability. If the brass hands are subsumed with poison still applied to them, the poison is absorbed by the Medusa and rendered useless as if used.

Lucid Visions (Su): When a Euryale reaches 8th level, her serpentine hair becomes more magical. As such, she gains blindsight 5' and immunity to flanking. This ability requires concentration that may be maintained as a swift action each round (DC 10). While in this state, the Euryale's serpents rise up as if ready to strike and work as the eyes of the Medusa. The Euryale's gaze functions through her serpents as well as her own eyes. If both the serpents and the Medusa focus on a specific target, her active gaze extends to 60 feet. At 10th level, her blindsight increases to 15 feet.

Rapid Snakes (Ex): When making a full attack action with your snakes, you use your BAB to modify your snake attacks. Effectively, you gain itterative attacks with your serpentine hair. If you also have Snake Chains in your hair, you fight as if using two one-handed weapons. When using this ability, you still may only apply poison to one attack per round made with your snakes.

Venomous Gaze (Su): At 10th level, you can entomb the soul of your victims in stone. As a full round action, you can make a single snake attack followed by a Petrifying Gaze. If your snake attack is successful, your opponent receives a -6 penalty to his save against your Petrifying Attack. A creature turned to stone in this manner can only be restored to life by either True Resurrection and Stone to Flesh (or Medusa's Kiss) or a Miracle or Wish spell. A creature is not immune to this ability unless they are immune to petrification and poison.

--

I based this as an extension of Monstrous Humanoid HD (BAB and Saves) while adding some new spellcaster-like invocations and some melee enhancements to the class. Also, I think the disguise and profession/craft bonuses grant a more "human" aspect to the character and would give her plenty of reason to venture into cities and the like.

So, P.E.A.C.H! I'm open to advice!

P.s. this is getting cross posted to the classes board and Eberron board...

For invocations, you might want to say "no blast shape or eldritch essence invocations," because....well, she doesn't have eldritch blast. Actually, that brings up the question, "which invocation list are you using?" Warlock, dragon shaman, custom?

For brass fists, shifting her hands back or forth should be a swift (or immediate) action. I dunno what's up with the penalty not applying on ranged attacks, but since it's only a -2 not really worried about it. What happens to her enchantments while her hands are "off?" Can they be hit with dispel/detect magic while "off" if carrying enchantments?

Can serpent's gaze be used (the bonus to Spot checks) while the snakes are torpid?

Make specific note of whether or not you can apply poison to your brass fists ability (I'm not sure if you can or not, or if it matters (don't know the type of poison, I thought for the medusa's milked venom it was injury).

For venomous gaze...it's fine, but I'd think the target simply turning to dust if it fails the second save might be a bit more appropriate, and true resurrection should still work on the target even if it fails both saves.

This is a good monster class. No glaring imbalance issues, at least not yet. Nice.

Armored Invoker - you didn't actually put this in

Snakes - increase damage again to 1d8 at level 7

Lucid Visions - I think 15' right away is a bit much. Maybe split it up over two levels, or even three (maybe increase darkvision as well).

Virulent Venom - is it still a poison effect? does it work on those immune to poison? I think the petrification and Str damage should both be present, forcing two initial saves (first for petrification, if the make it, then proceed to Str damave). Even if they are saved from the petrification later, they should still make the secondary poison save for Str damage.

Other:
- increase petrifying gaze DC by amount = class level/2 (round down)
- snakes should have scent... but I'm not sure that fits the class

Awesome ideas, I increased the damage, got rid of Armored Invoker (I originally included it because I thought Warlock's had a similar class ability...I didn't realize all invocations work in light armor). Instead, I replaced it with Forked Tounge for the scent idea you proposed.

I kept Lucid Visions as is because it's really just a way for the serpents to stay on constant alert rather than just a fancy headdress.

I also clarified Virulent Venom...I hope it's sound now.

Maybe at some point your Lucid Visions should make you immune to flanking as well. It just seems to fit with the constant awareness thing.

As for Virulent Venom, change the following sentence:
Once turned to stone in this manner, the Euryale may then glare into the eyes of her new victim forcing it to make a second saving throw
"may" - otherwise the ability might be interpreted as a forced two round action; this just clarifies that the permanent stoning is an optional extension of the first gaze attack (is there a time limit on when the "second gaze" can be performed?)
"throw" - typo

Wow...why is it that a person with a degree in English can't spell? Sad...

Regardless, I made a few changes. I reduced the Blindsense to 5' and added immunity to Flanking.

Venomous Gaze (renamed Virulent Venom) is actually a full-round attack that just requires two actions. You bite then gaze. I'm not really 100% in love with the ability to begin with...it is getting wordy and, apparently, difficult to read (you're not the first to comment on it). Matter of fact, I completely reworded it...

To be honest, I'm not entirely clear on what you want your PrC to accomplish. Are you gunning entirely towards a melee class? If so, it feels a bit at odds with gaining invocations at such an accelerated rate. Do you still want emphasis on the architecture bit, or was that aspect merely part of your character?

You're gaining greater invocations by 8th level, with CL = double class level?... That's significantly better than straight warlock, plus you have better BAB, better saves, and a plethora of better abilities. You're pretty much missing only Eldritch Blast and skill mastery (UMD). I would either reduce BAB to medium, or lower the number of invocations (and either drop greater invocations entirely, or give a more restricted list; which could let you cherry pick from the DFA as humanoid form is a really nice one for a medusa trying to blend in).

Returning to Virulent Venom and the whole attacking snakes things...
1) Well first of all, are we focusing more on the brass fists, the snakes, or trying to do both? Because attaching special abilities to a secondary attack isn't so good.
2) Maybe at early level give the option of making the brass fists secondary, and the snakes primary
2b) As you level up, increase the number of snake attacks (maybe 2 at 4th, 3 at 7th, 4 at 10th... ?) You obviously would get rid of Rapid Snakes if you had this.

3 - replacement for Virulent Venom:
a) Locking Gaze - "If you hit the same target with two or more snake attacks in the same round, you may use your petrifying gaze as a swift action on that target." (not sure if it should be "hit with ALL your snakes", which could be difficult to do; if it's hit with all, maybe let it be a free action; point of comparison: Illithid brain extract ability)
b) Soulless Statue - Any creatures that fails the save DC of the Euryale's Petrifying Gaze by 5 or more is considered dead and can only be restored to life by True Resurrection, Wish, or Miracle. The Euryale may choose to suppress this ability as a free action.

Ergh, that's my random thoughts for now. Going to stop now before I start sounding snarky. (sleepiness doesn't help, and now I'm getting confused where to use capilization and parentheses, and don't even get me started on those sneaky semi-colons)

My original design was a straight duplication of the Monstrous Humanoid levels with some other goodies. Perhaps I should drop it to BAB 3/4...it'd still net me a 15 BAB at 20th level just shy of four attacks. I do like the "more snakes" ability. Seems to make sense.

I'll make some changes and revamp it a bit before reposting it. I have a 9 hour shift today so...it'll be a while.

Yeah, I can sort of understand Venomous Gaze now. Unfortunately, it now also suffers from the "I've read it so many times it stops making sense" phenomena. It still feels a bit clunky though. Your fluff text says your snakes are infused with the essence of your gaze, which makes it sound like their venom is causing the petrification, yet later they still have to face your gaze separately.

How's this...

Just glanced over the Lucid Visions part again and noticed that you said the Gaze is a "line effect". Does this mean it affects everyone in that 60' line? If not, just simply say the range of your gaze attack extends out to 60'.

Wow...that looks so..simple. Why can't I put these things into words like that?
I chalk it up to a lot of teaching experience with children (ever try teaching trigonometry to 12 year olds? I've taught that stuff for a decade now and come up with new ways to explain it nearly every year). That and the engineering part of my brain dislikes words and likes to explain things in the simplest, most concise form possible (which ironically is a skill many engineers lack).
Tweedledope

12-27-06, 12:10 AM
Essentially, if the active gaze ability is used it extends the range to 60'. There's not a very clear definition on gazes in my opinion. The way I read it is there are two types (in the Medusa's case) which can be turned on or off.

1) The regular gaze. When activated, everyone in 30' must save...or avert eyes, etc.

2) Active gaze, one target within 30' must make save. No allies could be affected.

Essentially, what I'm going for is the second one but, with better range. One reason I always have trouble playing Medusae is that my fellow co-RPers think I'm gonna turn 'em to stone everytime I use my gaze. Perhaps I should word it like...

When in this state, the Euryale's gaze functions through her serpents as well as her own eyes (if they're open). If both the serpents and the Medusa focus on a specific target, her active gaze extends to 60 feet. At 10th level, her blindsight increases to 15 feet.

Does that make more sense?
Surreal

12-27-06, 12:23 AM
Hmm, I see the problem. A couple solutions:
1) Make the feat Narrowed Gaze (Savage Species or Serpent Kingdoms) a prereq. Now your gaze can be considered active at all times.
2) Give the Euryale the ability to suppress or activate her petrifying gaze as a free/swift action.

You know... I never actually knew that gaze attacks actively hit everything in range. I'd assumed that they were always active to begin with. Hmm, learn something new every day (and now that Narrowed Gaze feat makes so much more sense).
