we are running the one shot lvl 20 savage species campaign in one of the dungeons fairly soon.

The rules are pretty much that you have to have atleast a +10 ECL.

So far the party is looking to be a paladin hound archon, a sanctified (or whatever it is called in the BoED) Rahkshasa, a Gheale, a Genie fighter, and one other.

For my own character, I have been leaning towards playing a black etherguant (namely b/c the rahkshasa, though decent, is going to suck at arcane casting.)

The build is fairly self explanatory (it is an ECL 20 build).

But to my querries-
1. would it be more beneficial to play a red or white etherguant with class levels?
2. Should I go with fairly standard feats for him (he would get 6)?
3. As for items, its obviously core, and without the realms or custom items, what should I spend the gold on? (a +5 book seems to be a bit inconsequential when intelligence is already 40+...same with the headband)

4. are there any suggestions for a templated solid fighting or whatever creature that could atleast rival the etherguant in strength at 20th.

BTW, for feats, I have chosen-
Spell Penetration
Greater Spell Penetration
Extend Spell
Empower Spell
Quicken Spell
IMP initiative

-black is best
-standard feats are not wrong, thats why they are standard. for more suggestions take a look at the wizards handbook
-more int is always good as it amps your DCs into special regions. also pay attention to your weak spots

Black Ethergaunt is definitely UBER.

Go for Tome and Headband and the focus on defense against phisical attacks.

You could start as a Young Adult Phaerimm...

7 HD, LA +4 for an ECL of 11.

That starts you with 7th Level Sorc cast as Spell-like abilities (Silent, still, eschewed materials.)

With 9 more Sorc advancing levels, you get 8th level spells, including Tenser's Transformation and Stoneskin both without need for the costly material components...

I'm sure people can help you better than I from here.

As a note, you could start as Juvenile (or even Hatchling) and add other templates to get to ECL 10. White Dragonspawn maybe? You'll probably need sanctified... Or you'll just have to kill the Paladin.

Good Luck,
(Qaetar)

Well, for raw damage I would think a Multiheaded Insectile Winged Thri'kreen would be nice.

according to the XPH I have here, Thri'kreen have base +2 str, +4 dex, +2 wis, -2 int, -4 cha. 2 Racial HD and 2 LA, total ECL 5 ((this was also posted in the Wizards website))

They have 4 arms, 4 attacks.

Give them the Multiheaded template, they gain 2 HD and Superior Multiweapon Fighting. So, 4 attacks at -0 penality. +2 LA, +2 Racial HD. Total ECL 10.

Winged, so that it can stay out of melee range. +4 dex, +2 *don't remember* +2 LA. Total ECL 13

Insectile, 4 more arms. +4 dex, +2 *don't remember*. You now have 8 attacks at -0 penality. +2 LA

Total ECL = 16
+2 str, +12 dex, +2 con, +2 wis, -2 int, -4 cha*
Lots of dex and wisdom, 8 attacks a round with no penalities, but only 6 HD....

For ECL 13, just take out the Winged template and make use of the Climb speed that Insectile gives you to stay away from enemies.

* there are also +2 to something from Insectile, and +2 from something from Winged. I don't remember what.

yes, a phaerim would be nice, but it is the realms.

Yes, the book and headband are probably in, but what else should I shoot for? I know if it is allowed, the starfire cloak is a must.

ehm... how on earth are you doing your math ?

La+2 +2HD = ECL 4 not 5

+ multiheaded la+2+ 2HD = 8 ECL

+winged = 10 ECL +insectile = 12

Half-Ogre Feral Monter of the Legend Mineral Warrior
Fighter 6/Barbarian 1/Frenzied Berserker 3
+ some exalted rage feat (don't remember name)
+Extra Rage

Str = 18+6+4+10+2+4+6 = 50 [+20]
Deathless Frenzy
bonus attack/rnd
Reflective Hide (Permanent infinite Spell turning)

This should be much better than Ethergaunt.

I REALLY don't think so.

Otto's Irresistible Dance. Dead monster of legend.

Time stop, force cage. Dead monster of legend.

Empowered Cloudkill. Dead monster of legend.

I will be flying, improved invisible, concealed protected.
Dead monster of legend.

ethergaunt casts spell turning and then flesh to stone several times. 30% death every time (etherg. is immune to flesh to stone)
Dead monster of legend.

Caster are superior. Word.

And we are talking now of a caster with 18+20+4+5+6= 53 Int
and several outstanding abilities. (as well as insane stat modifiers)

No Match.

Hmmm...don't know why he hasn't posted yet. But I know he woulda wanted it this way:

Play a Bugbear. Slap on enough templates to get it to ECL 10.

Cheers :D

while bugbears are indeed superior in low levels at CL20 thats a different theme.
i think you have to stretch yourself very very hard to compete with a black ethergaunt.
and seriously, non-casters are out, its sad but...

Otto's Irresistible Dance. Dead monster of legend.
Spell Turning
Time stop, force cage. Dead monster of legend.
Rod of Cancellation/Rod of Disintegrate at will
Empowered Cloudkill. Dead monster of legend.
Second SQ - Poison Immunity
ethergaunt casts spell turning and then flesh to stone several times. 30% death every time (etherg. is immune to flesh to stone)
He'd have to have a lot of time. I think He'll be dead by then.
I know FB is not the best choice, but it ain't bad.

If you want to be REALLY min/maxed on casting try this:
Advanced Sharn (5 HD +5LA) Mystic Thuerge 10
Cast Spells as: 18lvl Sorcerer and 15lvl Cleric
+Dual Actions
Add feats: Multitasking, Multivoice, Otherworldly
= a LOT of spells per round

1)Spell turning does not work on touch spells.

2)Poison immunity has to be chosen. And I can Incendiary cloud you.

3) I can have a lot of time if you don't know where I am.

THIS can compare with the ethergaunt.Definitely.
Even stronger I'd say.

Monster of legend is dead meat.

The problem is again, I cant play as a sharn b/c it is a FR monster.

At high levels, a Monster of ledgend Cleric would rock the house. Monster of ledgend Anthro Monkey (LA+5) Cleric 15 means four domains and 9th level spells. Throw in a Cleric PrC for even more ownage. Sacred exorcist 10 is almost always a decent choice.

ECL = LA + HD + Class levels

Thri'kreen have 2 LA, 2 HD, and need 1 class level (such as ranger), thus ECL 5.

Multiheaded grants 2 HD and has 2 LA, making the Thri'kreen have 4 LA, 4 HD, and one class level (such as ranger), thus ECL 9.

Insectile grants +2 LA, making the Multiheaded Thri'kreen have 6 LA, 4 HD, and one class level, thus ECL 11

Winged grants +2 LA, making the Multiheaded Insectile Thri'kreen have 8 LA, 4 HD, and one class level, thus ECL 13.

As for my math, I added in another 2 HD out of nowhere. I goofed.

Nope.

You need 1HD so you can leave your three kreen 4 ECL, just with the racial HD and no class levels.
