| Arkhain12-09-04, 01:04 AM | Is it possible? The idea is to qualify for Frostburn's Winterhaunt PrC as an arcane spellcaster without losing a level to being a cleric or druid. The current build is Cleric 1 / Arcanist 4 / Frost mage 5 / Winterhaunt 10. This is tending towards a blasting mage, making use of all of the wonderful [Cold] additions from Frostburn. However, this means that he only has 19th-level arcane spells. While that's not some horrendously crippling loss, and that singular level of cleric makes all of the requisite skills class, I was just wondering if there was some method - class, PrC, feat, LA0 race, etc - that could let me keep 20th-level spells and still qualify for Winterhaunt. |
| Ravashack12-09-04, 01:20 AM | Frostburn's prestige classes are written with the frame of mind that you cannot apply a +1 to caster level to a class you have that does not qualify for the prestige class. This is consistent for every single one of the prestige classes that I've seen in it. So no, there really isn't any way you could do it. |
| Arkhain12-09-04, 01:23 AM | Are you quite certain? The way it's worded doesn't specify, and the fact that it specifies that you'd lose metamagic/creation feats, which are wizard-only, seems to suggest that adding to arcanist works. [edit] "The most sought-after winterhaunts, though, are wizardly winterhaunts, for the magic they wield is especially potent." That's from the flavor text above. Combined with the RAW, I think that provides a compelling case for adding winterhaunt casting levels to the arcanist casting power. |
| Ravashack12-09-04, 01:44 AM | Hmm, true. Regardless, the closest feat that grants spell levels is a regional feat that gives a 0th level arcane spell. That's really not going to help you. |

| Maelut12-09-04, 02:42 AM | Practiced Spellcaster. Cheap and cheerful solution. You don't get the extra spells/day, but you do get the increased caster level. As for ways of being able to cast 1st level spells, spell-like abilities wouldn't fulfil the requirement. CA is very explicit about this at pages 18 and 71 (although the issue is still be debated on every Warlock thread in existence), unless the errata changes it. You need to have mastered the mental challenge of learning a spell, not just controlling a spell-like ability in order to meet the requirements of a class which needs "Can cast Xth level spells". "Caster Level X", on the other hand, can be met with SLAs. So I don't think there's a way to do this. On the other hand... Tome and Blood, page 40, Extra Slot. You gain a spell slot of any level up to one less than the highest level spell you can cast. Note: It does not specify that it must be a spell slot of the same type, for the same class, etc. One might argue that you could gain a first level divine spell slot using this feat as a wizard. Then take Extra Spell (same page) to learn a single divine spell. |
| Maelut12-09-04, 02:49 AM | And, since we're going to be lawyering, we might as well have our bases covered. From another thread on the boards: Unfortunately, according to RAW, one instance of Precocious Apprentice is not enough to qualify you for Mystic Theurge early, as it only allows you one spell, while MT requires the ability to cast multiple 2nd-level arcane spells. ::shrug:: Workarounds may be possible, but singular != plural. Simple solution: Another feat in Extra Spell. Of course, at this point you've burned three relatively pointless feats. The efficiency of this build is definitely dropping. On the other hand, it's a cool concept of weaseling into the organization. The wizard who refused to join a church and taught himself enough to get in to the organization. |
| wtfpwned12-09-04, 03:13 AM | While the feat "Extra Slot" does not specifically say it needs to be in your existing caster class; in CA it gives two examples, one of a wizard and sorc, each preparing an extra spell of their class. If someone tried to pull this off I could defiantly call em on rule bending. I am all for Min/maxing, but sometimes common sense has to take priority over powergaming. |

It works with "Extra power," a basically identical feat from Expanded psionics. |
| wtfpwned12-09-04, 03:28 AM | But with "Expanded Knowledge" it specifically states that it can be done. With Extra slot, it does not say that, all we get are two examples of the feat, neither of which include a wizard taking an extra cleric slot. |

Well, personally I think that you're right, and that if WotC thinks that enough people think otherwise, they will errata it. |
