Hi all,
Ok. I've been working on this build for awhile now and Im curious to see what everyone thinks and asking for their comments/suggestions. Basically this character is designed to be a Secondary Melee Fighter who's main function is to Eliminate Single Targets and break up Group Targets. This uses the Variant Monk Style: Overwhelming Attack. Uses a Greatsword simply because it's my favorite (feel free to change this) Uses Players Handbook, Complete Warrior, & Unapproachable East Anyway...here we go...

Ok, so what do you think? Comments? Suggestions? Possible Feats to Take? What Class would you take at 20? Or should I add a +1 Template? All suggestions are welcome and thanks in advance for any advice.

Why not use a mercurial greatsword?

Seriously, though... I love the greatsword as well...and thinking about a dervish doing the Thousand Cuts...yikes - 16/16/16/16/11/11/6/6/1/1 (factoring in the flurry).

You could take a level in barbarian...would that let you rage while you do your dervish stuff (especially Thousand Cuts)? That might help you dish out more damage.

I hadn't thought about the Mercurial Greatsword...but I do love the idea, especially with the open feats...thanks.

In terms of Barbarian however, it states that "...A Dervish cannot perform a dervish dance while under the effects of a rage or frenzy ability."

In terms of his 10 attacks, they would actually be at 21/21/21/21/16/16/11/11/6/6 if I can Dervish Dance...or they could be 16/16/16/16/11/11/6/6/1/1 with a total of +15 damage to each attack from Power Attack, just need to make sure I have the room to circle my opponnent.

Again thanks for the advice,

Didn't have CW open in front of me...sorry. :)

Mercurial greatsword is 2d6 or 2d8...one of the two, at any rate.

You could take a level of kensai and enchant your sword...
Virgil

In terms of Kensai, again, another good idea, thank you very much.

And please keep them comming,

dont u have to go full progresion in Kensai in order to enchant your weapon to anything worthwhile?

ie to get the full +10 bonus u have to be 10th lvl kensai?

Yep, you're right. I didn't even notice that little table in the corner of the page in my sleep deprived stupidity. Thanks for pointing it out though. Any possible suggestions as to what you would do with the 20th slot?

Ok, now Im thinking about adding 1 Level of Exotic Weapon Master. I will change my Weapon Focus/Specialization to a Mercurial Greatsword (or a Fullblade for those of you who think the Mercurial is Munchkin') and take Trip Attack as my Exotic Weapon Stunt. I will then add Improved Trip to the build. What do you all think? With these changes I should still have 2-3 Feats still open, so again...any suggestions? As always thanks for any and all advice,

With your good unarmed damage, why don't you use a reach weapon instead of a greatsword? You can use your unarmed attacks if someone gets within 5 feet and you can't step away for some reason. I'd recommend a guisarme, so that you can make trip attacks with it. I have a character who fights like this. (monk3/ranger2/shou4/SinghRager4)

I snipped a bit of your post because I wanted to point out that the mercurial greatsword is an inferior choice for an exotic weapon when compared to a fullblade. However, for some reason, people think that a fullblade is less cheesy than a mercurial greatsword.

It's a Large weapon, far better than the Medium-sized mercurial greatsword. It does more average damage than a mercurial greatsword (even after taking critical hits into consideration), and it can be used without penalty if one increases in size (say via the Enlarge spell) without a -2 penalty for using a weapon of the wrong size.

In conclusion, never, ever, EVER take a mercurial greatsword. Always choose the fullblade. Oh, or a mercurial fullblade. :D

In terms of the Guirsame, truth be told it most likely would be a better choice for this build, and like I said anyone could switch it for the Greatsword, im just natural drawn to Greatswords. That's precisely why I'm considering adding Exotic Weaponmaster 1 to the build, so I can either trip or stunning blow opponents with my Fullblade/Mercurial Greatsword. However, I realize I wont have the luxury of 10' reach. Again it is great idea that I hadn't considered, thank you.

In terms of a Fullblade vs a Mercurial, again, thank you for the suggestion as that was something I again over looked.

Great so far everyone, but always looking for more :)

OK, I have the build pretty much squared away but I still have one more area that I could use some help on...magic Items. I have some rough ideas, but getting other opinions never hurts. Basically, what weapon enhancements, armor enhancements, wonderous items etc...do you think would help max this build out a bit more?

Thanks again everyone,

exotic weapon also allows you to flurry with a weapon...
Caelic

02-03-04, 08:34 PM
Only a double weapon or a spiked chain wielded in both hands.

There are lots of ways to get flurry style abilities. It'd be nice if WotC would officially rule on whether they stack.

Then again, there are a LOT of things WotC should rule on.
Virgil

I had considered using my exotic weapon trick for the Flurry ability, but like Caelic said, its only with double weapons or a spiked chain and I think its simply safer to bet that the two flurries wouldn't stack rather than would. But again, thank you for the suggestion.

Sorry to bump this thread up again if it is annoying anyone, but I figured I need to ask again. With my character build I still have 3 feet slots open and was looking for any suggestions. Be it a little feat combo, or just otheres that are good to have in general, anything would be appreciated. As alwways thanks in advance.

Hey with that many attacks I would take Improved Critical. Thats all I got if your talking the books in your beginning statement because my CW is loaned out right now.

If you wanted to use a halberd you could get an extra attack with Spinning Halberd. It's slashing if I remember. So that would be 11 attacks.. But it would be bludgeoning, so it might not work with dervish. And lower damage die...

Just for pure attacks and fun, a monk 7/shou 4/dervish 9 dual wielding scimitars gets 9 attacks per round every round. +4 damage to each attack makes it pretty nice, although in the long run a swashbuckler dervish is almost certainly a stronger option since it allows you to get your int bonus on each attack as well.

Also don't forget that flurry attacks use +1*str bonus even if it's a 2-handed or off-hand weapon.

As always, thanks everyone. I realy appreciate all the suggestions so please keep them comming :)

Oh and feel free to make suggestions from other materials as well...I can get my hands on whatever it takes hehe.

How are you getting so many attacks? The Monk's Flurry of Blows only applies to unarmed attacks and special monk weapons of which the greatsword is not.

From the 3.5 SRD:

When using flurry of blows, a monk may attack only with unarmed strikes or with special monk weapons (kama, nunchaku, quarterstaff, sai, shuriken, and siangham).

To get that many attacks I am using the Shou Disciple PrC from Unapproachable East. Its a 5 lvl class that ends off with the ability to flurry with any martial weapon. ( Also has 2 good saves and full BAB with 2 Bonus feats and advancing unarmed damaged.) So I flurry to get five attack and then use A Thousand Cuts from the Dervish to recieve 2 full attacks. This is also only once a day(and at 20th level at that)...but I didnt set out with the intention of seeing when I could get 10 attacks, the build achieves many things that I wanted to do and the Flurry Dance is just icing. Anyway...

Will be posting the finalized build soon with exact order of levels and such. Thanks again,

The Heavy Fullblade sounds great, may I ask what that is from?

Unfortunately I can't use a buckler as a Dervish if I want to be able to Dervish Dance, otherwise that would have been awesome. Again thanks for everything.

So it sounds like you may have already picked the class for your 20th level, but if not I'd suggest Templar, from Defenders of the Faith. It would require Endurance and Weapon Focus to get in, as well as 8 ranks in Knowledge (Religion).
Weapon Focus has to be with your deity's favored weapon, so this works best if your deity favors greatsword or whatever you decide on.

Benifits are Mettle - Evasion for Will and Fort. saves, and Weapon Specialization with that favored weapon.

With good saves, Mettle is sweet. I don't have unapproachable east, so if that Shou Disciple ability works with exotic weapons as well, you may be better off with a tripping build or something.

Anyways, I just thought I's throw that in.

Thats definately an interesting alternative, will have to check that out. Again, thank you very much.

Yes, I like Mettle a lot. The thing is that if you use an exotic weapon like the fullblade, you may have a hard time finding a deity with the fullblade favored weapon, and you would therefore have to waste a weapon focus feat to get in, and then wouldn't get the benefit of Weapon Specialization.

Kord is a standard D&D god with Greatsword favored weapon. Kord is Chaotic Good, but as far as I can remember, you don't have to share his alignment to revere him unless you are a cleric. It should be possible to have a monk who reveres Kord, as far as I can remember. If you decide to stick with the greatsword rather than fullblade, and go with a level of Templar, you should note that you end up with the same average damage after specialization as if you used a fullblade and didn't have specialization. Of course, if your DM will let you have a deity with fullblade as the favored weapon, that's awsome too.

If it stacks, add the Body Combat feat from Ultimate Feats. That will give you another attack.

Again everyone, thank you. I'll be posting the final build in prolly a day or 2 for anyone that's (still) interested hehe. But please keep giving advice, as it continues to point my build in new directions.
