We're going to run an adventure in a few weeks and the party is short a mage and cleric. (The rest of the party is fighter and rogue heavy.) I was looking at playing a fighter2/wizard4/spellsword4 at first, but want other ideas especially since we are always fighter type heavy. I am looking at playing a human and have 28 points to put into stats, using the DMG guideline for point costs for the stats. I guess race really doesn't matter. We're going to go through an updated version of Against the Giants. Perhaps a mage/cleric cross would be cool. We also have 20,000gp to spend on equipment. Any help would be great....Thanks

cleric is nice, because you can be goos at combat, buffing, and healing
just cleric 10 or clr6/radiant servant of pelor4 would be good

Wiz3/Druid3/Arcane Hierophant 4
Wiz caster is 7, Druid caster is 7, wild shape as a level 7 druid, animal companion is also treated as a familiar, and gets the benefits from both of them, and a few other fun stuff. Your druid spellcasting will give you your healing and some buff spells. If you want some fun, go Wu Jen or Warmage instead of Wizard. Sadly, if you go Sorc you have to be level 4 to get in the PrC(2nd level spells). I'm going to do this build in an upcoming game, and I thought I'd share it.
If you allow Psions, Psion3/Wiz3/Cebremancer 4 might be interesting. Psion as a level 7 and Wiz as a level 7. Again, go Wu Jen or Warmage, or Sorc at +1 level.
Sorry, I've been on a mix class hit lately. Like I said, I'm going to be playing an Arcane Hierophant in an upcoming game. ^^;;

I thought about the Cleric of Pelor at first, since I really want to play this some time, but I think it won't be as effective since we are going to play the Against the Giants campaign, revamped for 3.5. The effectiveness of the radiant servant of Pelor is more surrounded by undead bashing, right?

I didn't have Races of the Wild and didn't see the Arcane Hierophant, thanks for the tip....

The warmage intrigues me, is there any other avenues to explore with this class?

Thanks for the help...

I would suggest a warmage with Rainbow Serwant.
You will feel good in a party of warriors.
If you could switch the domains to a Healing Renevation and Protection (talk to your DM, but in RS description changing domains is said to be a common change), then you would be a healer AND arcane fire power at once.
Aslo after getting 10'th level of RS you will be able to cast all cleric and all ofensive spells in a game. So that's should be what you are looking for.

uhm.. he is going to play the "against the giants" campaign and you haven't suggested that he should play dwarf for +4 dodge bonus to ac? :)

What about a fighter2/wizard4/spellsword1/eldritch knight3? bab 8 and cl 7 and for the next 7 lvls he is gonna go 1 up in both caster lvl and bab.

Without cleric (or any magic healer) they will be unable to regenerate after ancounter... and they will dye if they will have to fight 2 times the same day.

Dwarf Favoured Soul has good dice, GREAT saves, not so bad BAB, weapon related feats... And if you buy him fireball-like spells (Additional Spell Feat or get a fire domain somehow), party has chances to survive. And you may have fun :]

For the fighter2/wizard4/spellsword1/eldritch knight3 build I strongly suggest "arcane disciple: heal" feat, as you will be able to cast cure spells (1 per spell level per day, but much better than nothing).

PS: I don't remember all requirements, but feat "militia" grants you prof. with all martial weapons so you don't need to be fighter to start eldritch knight. But maybe it's needed for others? Tell me what they has as a requiremenst and I'll check what can we do with it to avoid loosing spellcasting.

The only requirment for the game is 28 points for stats; 10th level; 20,000gp for stuff, and no psionics. Anything else goes..

Thanks for all the help so far.....

Cleric is better because the cleric can be a wizard in a pinch but the wizard can never be like the cleric.

Look ... at 10th level play, you can effectively play a Cleric who acts like a Wizard. Or a Wizard who can effectively perform Cleric duties.

My recommendation is a Cleric with a domain-&-feat setup that let's him emulate Wizard functionality. Say, chosing the Spell Domain and one other domain that has an exceptional amount of Wiz/Sorc spells that Clerics cannot normally access. The Magic domain is strong as well, for obvious Wand/Staff use. But the key here ... is the Spell Domain (PGtF/FRCS). And once you chose that domain, it's imperative you add the Domain Spontaneity feat (CompDiv) for the Spell domain. Your spellcasting versatility in addition to your Cleric's "Wizard" spellbook, will give you unprecedented Cleric/Mage functionality. Much better than the crappy MyTh. The Spell Domain's Anyspell/Greater Anyspell combo (achievable at 11th level for you) allows you to take care of whatever arcane spellcasting needs your party may have.

And ... you can still stay straight levelled if you so desire. Meaning no BAB interruptions from PrC's, full undead turning capability, and Divine Power casting for when you wish to be a Fighter as well.

Seriously, I'm looking at all the prior advice I strongly suggest you avoid any Gish type arcane builds. Your party is cleric-deficient. And that means serious trouble in your type of campaign.

Cleric is better because the cleric can be a wizard in a pinch but the wizard can never be like the cleric. Beyond what I wrote in the last post .... this statement by Beaver is incorrect.

You can effectively build Cleric functionality out of a Wizard chassis. But it is painstaking and usually not worth the heavy feat, PrC, and resource investment.

Healing, healing and more healing.

Especially if your DM is good. Your frontliners are going to get their skulls bashed in repeatedly by Giants.

Have you looked at what 1 level in Barbarian does to a Hill Giant?
Move 50' !!!!! (try to run-away, i dare ya)
Rage on top of already prodigious strength.
Plus Cleave, or worse Improved Bull Rush.

In a grind-out campaign like Against the Giants, it is really one of the few times I'd advocate taking Healing domain and Empower Spell.

When it comes to pure wound healing capabilities, the Wizard actually outperforms the Cleric at 7th level. Reference: Minor Creation spell + Craft: Alchemy and/or Herbalism skill check = Healing Salves (T&B) by the boatful.

If they play 3.5, Tome and Blood may not be accepted as it is 3.0 book and there already is Complete Arcane...

Aslo... High healing power, good with weapon, great saves, firepower (may be bought), good dice and so on = favoured soul :] And it is quite easy to play him that he looks like a Sorcerer.

We play 3.5 rules, but can use 3.0 rules since not everything has been upgraded yet, or if it has we don't have it yet. The only no go is for psionics...none of that. The DM wouldn't have an issue allowing the character to make healing salves using 3.0 rules. We can use offical WoC, or any suppliment ever published for d20 and/or D&D.
